5.0 out of 5 stars Works as intended. Love it., June 23, 2014

I've had a few different models of repeaters in my house, which is roughly 3500 square feet with our router on one end and the bedroom clear on another. Some worked for a while, but constantly dropped connections. This model, however, works flawlessly every time. I can even walk halfway down my block and still get reception. Areas of my house previously sparsely touched by wifi signal are now awash in it, powering multiple streaming devices like two Roku boxes, tablets and phone.

If you're looking for a simple repeater/range extender, then look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great multi-purpose tablet, June 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've used the Nexus phones before and loved them for their simplicity - just pure Android and nothing else. The tablets are the same. Great performance, incredible battery life and a beautiful display round out what I believe to be the best value on the market in the 7 inch range.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, though a bit graphic, June 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was a great movie. It had it's share of hilarity and somberness, but also demonstrated the insane levels of excess that can fuel some people with new-found wealth. The movie portrays Wall Street as a virtual molotov cocktail of testosterone, drugs, women, adventure, hubris, and non-stop partying (until the Feds crash it). If even 10% of this is true, I can see why our economy floundered so badly the way it did with these types of people at the helm.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concepts, but very verbose and seemingly a repeat of other books by the author, June 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The concepts in this book are good. They make sense for the most part, and are actionable. However, my complaints, as with other books by this author, are the verbosity of the content. What Alan takes 10 pages to describe could easily be boiled down to 10 sentences or less. Also, it seems like whole paragraphs are lifted virtually word-for-word right out of his other books. He even uses the same euphemisms over and over in each of his books.

Even with those detractions, however, there is good content to the book and it is worth a read. However, if you've read some of the other books by this author, it might be possible to skip this one as the content will seem somewhat repetitive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to consulting, though a bit repetitive if you've read the author's other books, June 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great introduction, step by step, to starting a solo consulting practice. My only complaint, as I've said before, is that Alan tends to be a bit verbose in his writing style. This book isn't as bad in that regard as some of his others, but it is still noticeable. Also, as per another review, this book seemingly has content copied wholesale from his other books - sometimes a paragraph here and there, but other times it seems like an entire chapter is lifted almost word for word. Those are the two reasons it didn't get 5 stars from me.

However, it does have a lot of good information, and gave me a lot of ideas especially for starting out. A lot of the technology references are very dated, as with many of his books, but you can get around them if you find another resource for that information. So, overall, I'd recommend it for someone wanting to start a solo consulting practice or someone looking to start a small agency.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good information, just VERY verbose, June 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Alan definitely has a lot of consulting experience. He comes off a bit brash and arrogant at times, but in a way that you'd like to be with 30+ years under your belt. For example, he describes subcontractors as "the delivery people...who are a dime a dozen" as if they are almost sub-human, even saying "don't let them read my book."

The book has some great information, BUT, it is incredibly verbose. What Alan takes 10 pages to describe could easily be boiled down into 10 sentences or less. This book could easily be half its size. I find myself waiting for him to get to the point multiple times. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the information he is conveying, I just wish he could do it more succinctly and matter-of-factly.

My other complaint is that there is a noticeable amount of content seemingly copied wholesale either from or into his other books. Sometimes it's a paragraph here and there, but occasionally it seems like an entire chapter is repurposed from another of his books word for word. He even uses the same euphemisms over and over in all of his books, sometime with only slightly different context.

Other than that, however, there is good information here for anyone looking to get away from hourly billing and into a value-based system, so it has value in that regard.

Zero to a Billion: 61 Rules Entrepreneurs Need to Know to Grow a Government Contracting Business
Zero to a Billion: 61 Rules Entrepreneurs Need to Know to Grow a Government Contracting Business
Price: $9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good, but not much startup advice, June 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book does have some great tidbits of information for an established business, though the title "Zero To A Billion" is a bit deceptive for the simple reason that the author's experience is entirely with working in established businesses. He's moved them from $25M in revenue to $450M or more, but, from what I can tell in the writing, he's never started at "Zero" as the title would suggest. He wasn't a founder or co-founder of a contracting company, but he does have a wealth of organizational knowledge. This is a good companion book if you are just starting out, but I wouldn't rely on it entirely.

If you are a newly established business a couple years into the game, there are some great tips on everything from organizational management to business development. The only downside in addition to what I just described is that so much of it is based on projects from the 1980's and not a whole lot is very modern.

Other than that, there was enough to keep me reading it, so I did like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfect, looks awesome, June 6, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I upgraded recently from the MX 860, which served me well for several years (and still functions fine to this day). This thing looks like something from the space program. Very sleek and modern. It prints and scans noticeably faster than previous models. The scan quality seems better, and the print quality is roughly the same as far as I can tell. They've also made the unit MUCH easier to connect to a wireless network - no more thumb drive required.

I only have two complaints - (1) that the multi-function buttons, while they look great, feel cheap and I'm fearful they'll eventually break and (2) the Canon desktop software is quirky and has an outdated interface. I had to go to the Canon website to download additional drivers to get it to work and their "Garden" product looks like a knock-off PhotoShop from 1996 or something.

Other than those two issues, it functions flawlessly and looks awesome so far.
