5.0 out of 5 stars Abridged but still enjoyable, August 9, 2014

Abridged version of the classic album. If you can, get the double vinyl set or the full CD set. If it isn't available, this will do in a pinch for a bit of nostalgia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Explains the Back Stories of Many Songs, August 3, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The backstories were interesting, but again, like his other available video, the intensity just wasn't there. I don't know if it is the editing, the sound folks or the director, but someone needs to really do this man justice and film him correctly. The songs are bit more risque but overall it is a tame show by a superb performer who is giving it everything he has within the confines and limits of what he has been given.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Major Billy Idol Fans, August 3, 2014
This review is from: No Religion Live (DVD)
Make no mistake, I love Billy Idol. However, the few available video's really don't do him much justice in capturing the intensity of his performances. This particular show didn't really warrant a good shelf life. Other concerts by other artists can be watched repeatedly. Sadly for Billy, this just didn't do it. It's good it's just not Billy Idol GREAT, if you know what I mean.

All That Glittered: My Life with the Supremes
All That Glittered: My Life with the Supremes
by Tony Turner
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS should be made in to a film!, July 28, 2014

The late Tony Turner managed to take his real life experiences with The Supremes and bring them to light with a 3-D scalpel precision. Other books about the late Flo Ballard and the exploits of Motown and the Supremes dance around the bitchiness, deceit and the insecurities. Even the biography of Florence Ballard written by her own sister seemed to stay focused on the mawkish downward slope and drunken behavior of the star and sadly, even Mary Wilson, who attempted to "tell it like it is" on her second book still held back a LOT. Turner took no prisoners and he wasn't catty about it. We start off with him as a boy from the Projects of NYC who had a chance meeting with Florence Ballard as her star was rising and we follow the course of his life as it interacted with Florence and The Supremes through their rise and utlimate fall. We don't just get a glimps of Florence drunk but get more of an insight into a spirit that was broken in half through various actions and events as they played themselves out. Mary Wilson is seen as the good time girl who liked the paycheck too much and didn't rock the boat until it was far too late. Diana, well, her attitude is legendary and it amazes me that she has any fans at all after all these years. The 3 women spent money faster than they made it and had never learned to manage it. All involved thought the party and good times would never end and the more they spent the more attitude they ALL got. On stage it was all teeth and smiles but offstage, humility was the one virtue none of them learned. This book doesn't sugarcoat the way the fictional "Dreamgirls" play/film has done nor does it scoot around the uncomfortable areas much like Wilson, Ross and Gordy have done in their own biographies. If ever a book should be adapted for a film about Florence Ballard and The Supremes, this is it. Too bad it is out of print, so if you happen to see a copy for sale, it is highly recommended that you get it because it answers far more questions than anyone has done to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbiased Reporting, July 28, 2014

After reading the tomes by Mary Wilson, one comes away feeling like she was leaving a lot out. Ribowsky helps to fill in some of the gaps with unbiased, no nonsense reporting. He did the best he could with the available information and managed to draw the reader in to a lost place and time in musical history.

5.0 out of 5 stars The SUPREMES: Forever Legendary, July 15, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was an enthralling read about the biggest female pop group of all time, yet, Wilson seems to be "too nice" and holding back to a degree. While she does depict some of the more sordid aspects of what went on behind the scenes, one can't help feel that she is holding back on really giving Diana Ross and Berry Gordy the almighty TKO that they so rightly deserve. The sad reality is that when she called it quits with the Supremes, the new trio had just released an album that should have put them over the top and into the spotlight. As a young man when it was first released, I still remember thinking, "this is it!" Some of us waited for 12 inch versions of some of the songs to be released but most of us never saw them in our record store racks. In fact, we were lucky if we saw ANY of the post Diana records in the stores at the time, so Gordy really made it a point to kill the group as he had pretty much promised when he "washed his hands of the group. Those of us who have been fans can't understand Wilson's singing insecurities, so hopefully this book will make people seek out her post Diana Supreme's music along with her solo work. That girl can sing! Thankfully, even Florence Ballard's solo work is now available. Wilson, if nothing else, immortalized Ballard for music history where she was long overdue.

Truth be told, had I never known that Moby was vegan, I probably wouldn't have heard one song from him. Once it was disclosed that he lives a compassionate lifestyle, it was important to follow his work to get an understanding of his philosophy and creativity. I'm not only glad that I found his work but am doubly happy supporting his projects with a clear conscience knowing that he doesn't support animal abuse in any form.

When it comes to big vocals that can move you, no one can belt them out quite like Martha Wash. She has been heralded as an underground dance diva for a number of decades, so it is only fitting that the rest of the world catches up to the great body of music that this lady has created and released.

There is nothing that this lady sings that doesn't have an otherworldly quality to it. Any one of her releases transports the mind and body to another place, space and realm. Her musicianship coupled with great vocals is a musical massage for all the senses and she should be featured in everyone's collection.
