5.0 out of 5 stars Build quality is really nice; sharpness is good, December 15, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been using this lens for a couple of weeks now with my Sony A7r. Build quality is really nice; sharpness is good; nice that it has image stabilization, because with 36 mp even a little movement does affect picture quality. Also, the lens is quite light (weight) so it's pretty easy to use hand held. Not quite as sharp as the 55mm 1.8, but close enough. I do recommend this lens to someone wanting a lens for a Sony FE mount with this zoom range.

This adapter functions beautifully and doesn't add a lot of bulk to the camera. But it has both an internal auto focus motor and translucent mirror technology that speeds up autofocus on the A7r, using phase detection technology so it actually imrpoves auto focus performance of the camera. Only thing...the translucent mirror costs about a third of a stop of light. Only reason I give it four instead of five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharpness is great, bokeh is fine, July 31, 2014
I bought this lens because reports on the sharpness of its images from Dxomark and others have been that the images are substantially the same as other lenses that are much more expensive. I purchased it with the Sony A mount to use with the LAEA 4 adapter on a Sony Ar7, 36 megapixel mirrorless camera. Then lens works perfectly with this camera and adapter because even though the lens and camera both lack an autofocus motor, there is one in the adapter. With the adapter, the autofocus is very accurate and very quick. So for about $800 total, I got a lens that was faster (f 2.8) and sharp.

After several weeks of using it, I have to say that my own experience with this lens in this combination, is superb. Sharpness is great, bokeh is fine. One of the tests I run on every new lens/camera combination is macro shooting the stamen in the middle of a hibiscus flower. If you do this shot right you can get a pretty clear image of the individual yellow balls of nectar/pollen that are not visible to the naked eye. The best picture I took with this camera/lens combo is the best I have taken to date...
One of the main reasons I bought the A7r was that I wanted the performance of its remarkable ff 36 mp sensor, but did not want to carry a big heavy camera like the Nikon D800 cameras. This lens is not only less expensive but also a lot smaller than the general run of 24-70 mm ff lenses, and lighter. Even put together with the adapter, it still feels like a small camera.
To note -- the LAEA adapter works with Sony's translucent mirror technology... the benefit is that the adapter itself helps deliver really fast autofocus, but you do lose about one third of a stop of light because of the translucent mirror, so that affects low light performance. However the only available E mount zoom lenses for the a7r are at best 3.5 to 4 f stop wide open...and have tested not sharp enough to deliver the images that the sensor is capable of...So I think this combo is the best choice for the everyday walk around lens for this camera for the time being.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful everyday lens, May 9, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This lens performs nearly identically to the newer version of it, but the newer version also has vc (image stabilization.)
I bought this lens for the $289 price for my D7000 and it performs beautifully. I bought the newer one also (for more money)for my D5300 and it is also a great lens. These two lenses were something of a discovery for me. According to Dxomark ratings, this lens and its new brother both rate very high for sharpness and overall performance, in fact equivalent to the vaunted Nikon 24-70 2.8 that costs an arm and a leg more. I also was interested because of the constant f2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, which makes family (and other) pictures in nightime indoor light much nicer because you can use lower ISO.
Size matters, and in this case the size that is important is the size of the lens opening. A larger diameter lens can capture and hopefully transmit more light to the sensor...and that can mean better pictures, especially in low light situations. So one thing to note about this lens is that the lens diameter (67 mm)is comparable to the lens diameter of many full frame lenses. I think this is why Tamron and some others are now delivering dx lenses with wider aperture, which in this case is f2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range.
Low light performance is not the only benefit of this trend. The wider open lenses give us more artistic options in terms of depth of field and bokeh. And options for faster shutter speeds which can improve pictures by eliminating camera movement.
For DX shooters, it is nothing but good news. And this Tameron lens and its image stabilized successor are really helpful in achieving what the new 24 mp sensors are capable of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect everyday lens, May 9, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I like this lens very much. It focuses quickly on both my d7000 and d5300. It is much sharper than the kit zooms from Nikon and still not too large or too heavy. At 2.8 throughout the range, it takes nice low light pictures at every zoom. Especially with the new 24 megapixel cameras, you need good glass to get the benefit of the images the camera can produce...this lens gets you much closer to ideal than the kits. I also have the new sigma f1.8 17-35 mm which is even sharper and even faster --- but I am using this lens now as my everyday lens because it is nearly as sharp, nearly as fast and much smaller and lighter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Batteries reasonably price, February 6, 2014

Hard to "love" a battery, but the Vivitar generic batteries do work well.
Bought them before for Sony Nex, and now for Nikon D5300...
has the computer chip embedded so you see the remaining battery life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning images, October 23, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the third of the highest quality prime lenses that I have acquired, and the best. The clarity of the images are simply stunning. Especially if you are shooting with high megapixels (i.e. 16 mp and up), this lens will likely allow your camera deliver image clarity you have just not seen before.
I have been especially amazed by depth of field aspects of this lens. Of course at the 1.4 end, you can get a shallow dof and with nice bokeh. But in the middle ranges of the f settings, you can achieve quite wide depth of field. Gives a wide range of artistic opportunity.
The build is great: it is solid, very tight, the autofocus works quickly.
Immediately this has become the primary lens I use for every day photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this Expresso, May 21, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I use a pump expresso machine to give me even quality coffee. They get more of the flavor out of coffee than any of the other prep methods. Especially better than drip. I've had this one six months. It's easy to use and clean and the coffee is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible camera, May 21, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This little camera takes absolutely incredible pictures. On automatic in low light it jumps quickly to ISO 3200 where its low light performance is the best of any camera I have used. You can buy some expensive lenses for it, that take it to truly superb levels, but the one that comes with it does a remarkable job for everyday photography.
