5.0 out of 5 stars Quadrecentennial standout, July 30, 2009
Of the many books being produced to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration of the river named after him, this may be the best, a series of essays by top scholars on the Dutch influence on the development of New York State LONG after the English conquered the Dutch in 1674. Fascinating. Accompanies a show at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers this summer but also stands alone perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Berlin in World War II, May 28, 2009
This review is from: Every Man Dies Alone (Hardcover)
Unbelievably well written, the novel has a unique focus: the everyday actions of ordinary people - postal lady, lady factory worker, carpenter foreman, etc. -- as they cope with the Nazi regime. These are the quiet, unlikely resisters we have never known about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving, July 11, 2007
Anyone who loves Cairo will be enthralled with this personal account of life in the charmed city in the 1940s and 1950s. It is a deeply personal story by a young woman with unbelievable powers of observation. She is a good reporter but more than that a fine recorder of her family's trials and tribulations moving from gentle, bustling Cairo to the brutal Booklyn of the 1960s. Will keep you up all night...

4.0 out of 5 stars slightly disappointed, August 14, 2005
While the text is pretty good and the historic pictures are fine, there should have been more contemporary photos to show the Connecticut River Valley Today and how people are using the barns today.
