4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for independent study, July 25, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Lingua Mater has good literature selections to study and reflect on, but it is also a bit too complicated. I graduated in English education and found the some of the grammar exercises tricky, especially the one on verbs. My 7th grader would have been lost on her own. I agree with Mrs. Davidson that studying grammar in context of good literature is useful, but more explanation would be helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most complete children's Bible, July 25, 2014
This review is from: The Children's Bible (Hardcover)
The best children's Bible, hands down. I have bought and received many other children's picture Bibles, but this one is the most complete and most like reading the real Bible. I remember this Bible from when I was a child in the 70's, but it's not just nostalgia that has me choosing this one most often. The pictures aren't as colorful as some modern ones, but I can't stand cartoonish-looking Bible characters. These pictures have detail and accuracy that others do not. It may be too difficult for a seven or eight year old to read on their own, but no one should complain about spending time teaching God's Word to their children. I learned details that I didn't know myself. I've read complaints that children's Bibles shouldn't have so much "bad stuff" like killing. Maybe very young children should skip some of those details, but even a 5 or 6 year-old can and should understand that people make bad choices sometimes and that God is just, though always merciful to those who repent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read aloud for study of ancient Israel, February 6, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Just finished reading this book aloud to my 10 and 12-year-olds and we all loved it. The Biblical story from Judges Chapter 4-5 about the prophetess Deborah and the Hebrew leader Barak defeating Sisera and the Canaanites is retold with such suspense and rich characters that the story is brought to life for modern children, far removed from hardship and a world where children were sacrificed on pagan altars. We originally were going to read only two chapters per day, but most of the time read four or even five because no one wanted to stop.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic story and quaint but perfect claymation, January 28, 2014

Tolstoy's story is one of the best. A humble, lonely cobbler hears the voice of God tell him that He will visit him on the following day. As the cobbler waits for God's visit, he intervenes in the lives of passersby to give them aid or sound advice. Late in the day, God speaks to him and tells him that God himself did visit the cobbler in the form of these people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Homeschooling Purposes, January 28, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Even though I like the 9th grade Prentice Hall Literature better, this 10th grade does have a good selection of literature for the classically-minded homeschool. I will give a few of my favorite selections, though this list is far from even half of what's included. In the short story genre:
The Monkey's Paw by Jacobs
Two Friends by de Maupassant
Through the Tunnel by Lessing
Hearts and Hands by O. Henry
By the Waters of Babylon by Benet
How Much Land Does a Man Need by Tolstoy
The Good Deed by Buck
Luck by Twain
There Will Come Soft Rains by Bradbury
The Masque of the Red Death by Poe

Poetry:
The Wind--tapped like a Tired Man by Dickinson
Metaphor by Merriam
Success is Counted Sweetest by Dickinson
After Apple-Picking by Frost
In Flanders Fields by McCrae
Meeting at Night by Browning
Spring and All by Williams
La Belle Dame Sans Merci by Keats
I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land by Akhmatova
Some Like Poetry by Szymborska
And many others by poets from all over the world.

Drama:
Antigone by Sophocles
The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by Shakespeare

Nonfiction
A Child's Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas
The Dog That Bit People by Thurber
A Storm in the Mountains by Solzhenitsyn
On Tragedy by Aristotle
Keep Memory Alive by Wiesel
What Makes a Degas a Degas by Muhlberger
Star Wars: Breakthrough Film Still Has the Force by Ebert

Epics, Legends and Myths
from Don Quixote by Cervantes
Morte d'Arthur by Tennyson
from The Once and Future King by White

I will probably add novels to round out our year.
Another feature I like about this book is that every selection begins with a Guide for Reading including background info on the author and ends with comprehension questions, critical thinking questions, vocabulary and grammar skills plus a writing assignment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a pencil sharpener that really works well!, December 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This pencil sharpener sharpens to a fine point within a few turns of the handle. Don't leave it in there long or it will eat the pencil. I was so tired of getting hand-held sharpeners that quickly got lost in this homeschooling house of 8 children that I simply had to try another option. I was wary because of our old mounted pencil sharpener that didn't work well, but this one was well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, beautifully written children's book on the Papacy, December 18, 2013
This book covers the Biblical support for the Catholic belief in the Papacy as beginning with St. Peter when Jesus changed his name to Peter or "rock" and gave Peter the "keys of the kingdom." The book gives other support such as the times Jesus singled out Peter at the Last Supper as well as when he asked Peter to "feed my sheep." The meaning and history of the "Chair of Saint Peter," and the "Keys of the Kingdom" are explained as well as a brief look at some of the Church's greatest popes. Even information on Saint Peter's Basilica, the Swiss Guard, and the pope's duties are included. The end of the book has a list of all the popes and gives the exact Bible passages and sources of Tradition to support the Papacy. Overall, very thorough, and certainly not just for children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for homeschooling, though I did supplement with novels, October 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you're homeschooling a 9th grader, this text has the usual ninth grade offerings before "Core Curriculum" came along. The units are divided by theme; each selection is followed by a good number of comprehension questions, vocabulary development, grammar lessons, and a writing lesson. Each selection has an introduction to help you understand more about the author or explain elements to look for in the writing itself. I will list SOME of the selections below. I omitted about half but supplemented with novels. Overall, a good choice and used books are very inexpensive.

The Most Dangerous Game
The Birds
The Red-Headed League
One Ordinary Day, with Peanuts
The Gift of the Magi
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The Cask of Amontillado

5.0 out of 5 stars A great deal!, October 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For the price, this is unbeatable. I've washed mine 20 times or more with no problems. The best method for cleaning the filter is to use the "center" setting on my hose nozzle. This sends out a hard, but well-distributed spray that doesn't put too much water on any one spot. The filter comes out looking practically new.

NOW Foods Elderberry and Zinc, 90 Lozenges (Pack of 2)
NOW Foods Elderberry and Zinc, 90 Lozenges (Pack of 2)

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it has a bad taste, but it works great!, October 18, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
No quality zinc lozenge has a good taste. If possible, I let these dissolve slowly before bedtime, or some other time I know I will not be eating or drinking for a while. Several times in my household, those who refused to take one because of taste caught a cold that we had all been exposed to. Those of us who used the zinc lozenge right away, at the first sign of the cold, did MUCH better.
