1.0 out of 5 stars Listed but unavailable, May 8, 2014
My rating is for the unavailability of this product...not the product itself.

It seems inconceivable to me that Michael Crichton's most famous book is listed here on Amazon as an audiobook, with samples you can listen to, but unavailable to purchase through either Amazon or Audible. I have spoken to Audible as suggested in the pop up window and they have no idea why the book is unavailable in this market. The best they can suggest is that the publisher hasn't released it for sale in this region for some vague reason. Amazon and Audible FAIL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time Capsule, January 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for my dad as a Christmas present and we all watched as this wonderful time capsule of travel, both domestic and foreign, unfolded. While it is somewhat uneven with too much time devoted to some subjects and not enough for others (NY especially!) it was a fascinating look at the world as it existed then. The conceit of the two traveling couples is ridiculous and they add nothing to what is essentially a medley of travelogue footage. But it survives on the merit of the travel footage alone. The extras are interesting in a "watch it once" kind of way...fun to see the two women as they are now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scaled back, January 23, 2014
I was disappointed to learn that the Roger Moore collection (and the reissue of the Sean Connery collections) were scaled back from 6 discs to 3) The original Sean Connery collections, vols. 1 & 2 had a disc of supplementary material for each corresponding film. While this isn't an issue if you only wanted the movie or had the previous 2 disc editions of any of the individual titles, for those holding out that the Roger Moore sets would be parallel to the Sean Connery sets, it's a bit disappointing.

Not a single mouse caught. That basically says it all. Tried to do the humane thing. This is not the product to do it with.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top 10 books of all time., December 1, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love the book. It might be one of my favorite books of all time. I was happy with the Film Wizardry book but that looks like kiddie fare compared to this tome. Whatever was missing from that previous volume is present here with an series-wide look at the making of each film with all its attendant nuances. I especially loved reading individual points of view from the actors for each of the films. You get a distinct feeling that this book was written with an insider's perspective. Having visited the studio in Leavesden, this volume remains as my keepsake for a decade's worth of Harry Potter magic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and complicated., December 1, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I saw this book in Barnes and Noble and was thoroughly taken with it. Everything from the scalloped edges to the design to the recipes communicates the author's exacting sensibilities and, undoubtedly, the reason behind the success of Miette. That said, once I purchased the book from Amazon and read it (literally cover to cover), I thought that I might not ever make any of the desserts in the book. It's not that they're not appealing..but the book is designed to replicate the bakery recipes even down to their impractical scale which necessitate buying less standard sized pans, etc. The detail that drew me in to the world of Miette is also what will likely keep me out of it because none of the recipes are for the spontaneous baker...they all require very deliberate planning and ingredients/equipment. The size issue is one that the author deals with in her text, explaining that she feels the scale reflects "an elegant sufficiency" which I totally get...and that it uses far less ingredients (less, not fewer) that a standard 8 or 9 inch pan...also a good thing...but am I going to buy 6 inch pans to do it?...probably not. If one runs a bakery, there is time to indulge in many of the eccentricities of these recipes...but for a regular Joe, it takes more of an effort and I'm not sure I'm ready to put that forth as a garden variety baker. I'm glad I bought the book...but it will likely fall into the category of "Food porn" on my shelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Dischordant Sound of Music Family Scrapbook, December 1, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had really high expectations for this book. I thought it would be a more comprehensive look at the making of The Sound of Music, but it is, as the title promises, really a scrapbook of memories. As such, it's a bit schizophrenic in its approach...one page doesn't necessarily relate to the next. Even in a scrapbook, one hopes for a bit of continuity and that's just not present here. That said, the anecdotes are fun and interesting and the photos are revealing of what an incredible experience this must have been for these actors at such an early and impressionable point in their lives. Many of the stories have been told before in interviews, on DVDs, etc. I don't think this is a failure on the part of the actors because they aren't writers necessarily. I think the responsibility rests with Fred Bronson who should have imposed more structure on the book and provided the outside context by which to appreciate the first person narratives. I was also disappointed in the really bad graphic design. Obviously, a must for diehard fans...and it functions well in conjunction with The Making of the Sound of Music and The Sound of Music Companion. You might watch the accompanying DVD once...twice tops.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many notes., December 1, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this as a gift for my father who loves the movie. Unfortunately, this is a director's cut...and ONLY a director's cut and it expands the movie in a way that doesn't serve the film. I think my father watched it once and will likely not watch it again. I wish they had seen fit to include the theatrical version as well to give viewers the option which version to watch. If you love the film and a curious, go for it, but you may feel, as I do, that you should have waited for the definitive presentation...with the theatrical version intact.

This has been a great asset for connecting multiple hard drives to my computer. Until my latest iPad software upgrade, it worked perfectly and flawlessly. Now the iPad needs to be directly connected to the computer to show a charge, though I suspect it still charges when connected through the hub, but maybe not as quickly. Beyond that, it still performs very well with the hard drives and eliminates the need for plugging and unplugging devices. I had read the reviews and they were right...you're paying a bit more, but you're getting a quality product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Yesterday's tech., December 1, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this shortly before getting a new Mac and found that, because of the low resolution on the screen, I ended up watching DVDs on my Mac and this has gone, sadly, unused. If only the resolution had been slightly better it would have been a lighter, smaller alternative to lugging my computer around, but I find that I'm more likely to watch DVDs on the Mac for the better picture quality. Everything looks pixelated on here and when you're watching it in close proximity, as you're likely to do, it becomes a bit annoying. I think this is one piece of technology whose time has passed.
