1.0 out of 5 stars Augustus Saint-Gaudens: Master of Americasn Sculpture is a Documentary, August 4, 2013

Augustus Saint-Gaudens: Master of Americasn Sculpture is a Documentary..Great story, great bit of history, but why all the loud music. If I wanted a musical, i'd get Oklahoma, Music Man, or any one of many musicals available. Why the load noisy, &%($# music in this movie. It's awful and very, very distracting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Put this book alongside Polk, Cleeton and Pitkin, ITU Lessons in Printing, May 4, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A well written book with a modern approach to letterpress with interesting projects for the student. It keeps up with the times, being a good addition to the long-accepted Polk, Cleeton and Pitkin, and the ITU Lessons in Printing, among others.
--There are a load of (in my opionion) good things about this book.
--There are some (again in my opinion) not so good things about his book.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the 21st century wanting to get a good understanding of letterpress, and doing it in a fun fashion.
If you want to set several lines in 10pt. Century Schoolbook, such as "The quick red fox jumps over the lazy brown dog." or "Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs" go for it, but that's not how it's done these days.
Just one thing I don't understand...I saw this the minute I opened the book and
flipped through the pages, two columns of text about 19.5 picas...pages and pages of this and I could not find a (not a one) hyphenated word or word division, at the end of a line.
JESSICA WHITE...WHAT DID YOU DO WITH ALL THOSE HYPHENS??
ON SECOND THOUGHT...HOW DID YOU DO IT???
At last a book that I can recommend to my newbie printer students.

Disquisition on the composing stick (Typophile chap book)
Disquisition on the composing stick (Typophile chap book)

Edition: Unknown Binding

5.0 out of 5 stars Yesterday I could not spell DISQUISITION, today I'm reading it!, February 26, 2013
One of the few books to be found on this subject, but it covers it thoroughly. Wide page layout and long lines of about 10 pt. type make ackward reading.
Well illustrated mainly from the author's collection. Slip case adds a good bit of class to this book and along with the title it impresses your guests.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compositors' Tools And Materials: A Primer Of Information About, February 20, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book of some forty pages is a reprint of a 1918 technical book published by the United Typothetae of America, the printing employers group. Part of a series of books for the printing apprenti it is a concise study and instruction on the use and operation of composing room tools, especially the composiing stick. It is of interest to anyone studying the history of letterpress printing.
Review questions and a glossary, plus a list of the books in this series, are a helpful part of this book for those who are new to letterpress.
Aproximately forty line drawing illustrations help to make this interesting reading as well as a helpful reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars A day without popcorn is like a day without . . . . ., April 10, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I realized that I can no longer afford potato chips, nor can I afford the calories and the sodium that go with them. So, here comes popcorn. And Orville is the REAL THING in popcorn. How else but air popped? No butter, no oil, no salt. Only a couple of unpopped kernels in each batch! Almost forgot to mention there's no cleanup of butter or oil when it's air popped!! I love the popper, looks great on the counter-top. It would be nicer though with an on/off switch. A FULL *****.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Typographic Workbook, November 27, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book mainly for the front cover which illustrates exactly how NOT to lock-up a type form for printing. Also I am very distracted by items such as: Aldus Mantius rather than Manutius, in the glossary, Ludlow is defined as "a hand composing stick usually used for setting headlines and display fonts in lead type." In the glossary BCE now refers to "Before Christian Era", where CE refers to "Common Era". These were formerly known as "BC" and "AD". I guess I missed out on these changes. etc.,etc.,etc.,etc.,etc.,etc.,etc. Book is full of typos and inaccuracies. This is how our kids are learning about the printing trades? 'Tis a sad day!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars A 21st-Century Guide to the Letterpress Business, November 27, 2011
A 21st-Century Guide to the Letterpress Business is a book likely written by a complete newbie. Referring to type cases as type drawers, and galleys as galley trays is not what I want my children to learn. Printers have centuries old traditions and terminology and we want them to live on for our children and our grandchildren. If you want a book of this nature there are many from the golden age of letterpress printing written by printers and teachers with hands-on experience. Any printer who sees the position of the gauge pins on the press on the front cover, immediately realizes the lack of knowledge and experience of the author.
