This review is from: Never Fall Down (Hardcover)
Remarkable! Explains why the North Korean behave the way they do today..
Never trust them with the truth. Their goal is always to get something in return and give you as little or nothing in return.

4.0 out of 5 stars the brightest minds and war!, April 20, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book contains things I have always wondered about the people who developed this technology and the effort on the part of those who wanted it bad enough to steal it. I grew up at the aftermath of the bombs deployment on our society.
One wonders what would have happened if others had got there first!

5.0 out of 5 stars Leaders made in crisis, July 5, 2010
I have read most accounts of the major players and battles that occurred during the civil war period.. The author has done a great job connecting the lives of five men who became president who emerged as leaders has a result of their experiences during the civil war. I can, as a relate to this account of to what these five men experienced and learned as a result of their service to their country as it parallels my own experience upon entering the US military in my early 20's.
James Perry has produced a most accurate and surprisingly riveting account of the battles each man faced during the war and the characteristic of leadership that emerged in men that became US Presidents within the following two decades of our county's history. Other Historians have given us a wonderful full picture of US Grants achievements both during the war period and his presidency. The author brings us fresh accounts of battles faced by Grant as well as Rutherford Hays, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley. The men that emerged under this baptism of fire were changed. This is the story of the birth of the great personal leadership qualities that were wrought!

5.0 out of 5 stars Petersburg, January 25, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was surprized by the depth and freshness of coverage of this fast flowing account as the last days of Lee's power unfold. A good well balanced narrative.Greene is right up there with top civil war historians in my estimation. A hightlight for me was the touring infomation he provides on the battlefild sites. Last summeer I spent two days trying to cover as much of the Petersburg Battle and Appomatix retreat as my time allowed. This book would have made my trip much more effective. I applaude the efforts currently being made to preserve these site.
If one is diligent he can find defensive pits still in good condition that remain unprotected by walking in the woods off the main Five Points byways. How long will they last this way?

4.0 out of 5 stars Saratoga, January 25, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a good review of tactic and strategy employed in this American victory at Saratoga. I thought the author gave a good strategic analysis of the battle of Saratoga and its impact on the out come of the American Revolutionay war. On the down side the author spends considerable time to denigrate the analysis of other historians that preceeded his own view point. He makes a good case that General Gates was a considrable better leader than others have concluded. Since this is my first read on the battles of the Ameriacan Revelution I have nothing to balance his viewpoints. Maps are well done. One is left guessing why an experienced General Burgoyne would have allowed his army's supply route to be cut off and dallyied into October until he had only a weeks supply before taking any action.

5.0 out of 5 stars The secret is out!, May 29, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I consider this little book one of the best commentaries on the causes of the civil war I have found. Revisionist have tried to butter over the the driving forces that convinced Southern leaders that Disunion was a better option than the devastation and human sacrifice they knew that war would cause our counrty.
Written from a Southern perspective, the author brings out all the emotional animosity, racial angst and raw insult being felt as the result of the the North abolition movement and Black Republicans election victory in 1860 in the actual words of the Secession Commissioners.
It is not pretty but it contains the best explanation of the "why" question so many people have wrestled with over the last 140 years.
This book has great historical value!
