5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read epic, April 23, 2014

If you don't like long books this is not for you. If you can stomach the idea of reading a book for a month or more however, this book will not disappoint. This book is fantastic. A compelling story, fun characters, and quixotic mystery take the reader on an epic journey around our planet.

If you enjoy technology or, better yet, work with computers, this historical fictional tale takes on even more relevance as it recounts the early days of digital computing and cryptography. The book is especially relevant today with it's themes of national security, cybercrime, and digital currency (here's looking at you Snowden/Bitcoin). It's amazing how Stephenson seemingly predicted these key modern issues.

As a bonus, the Wired article Stephenson wrote about cable-laying is a fascinating companion peace to the novel, included in at the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read, April 23, 2014

Read this in preparation for moving out to the West Coast. It does a nice job of capturing the tech fueled world out here while reminding us of the analog technologies of the past. While the story is quite fun, the mystery is never overly compelling and it ends quite flatly. There's no real message but if all you want is an enjoyable story about books, a quirky librarian, and a cult this is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously accessible but may lack depth for some, April 23, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Know what you're getting. This is a fun casual game for everyone and anyone. It's on of the few games I dare expose non-gamers too. It's fun to play with your girlfriend, kids, friends, whomever!

There's also a lot of content here and the challenge does ramp up quite nicely. However in the end it's a tried and true side scrolling platformer. The latest Rayman game has even more content, additional modes, and online connectivity so just go buy that!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good case with some minor flaws, April 15, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I like this wallet case. Considering how cheap it was, it's a steal. It's the only wallet case I've found that really has room for bills. Most others tout space for cash but it often requires folding it up awkwardly. However after years of doing the wallet-case, I'm switching back to a simple case, at least till I upgrade phones.

The case itself is sturdy and the fake leather is quite nice. I have to replace it though because after a few drops, the bottom two corners that hold the phone in have broken off allowing the device to slide (which messes with the volume buttons). I guess the case did it's job by protecting my phone but it's unfortunate that the plastic is so brittle as to break with each drop.

My only other issue with the case is that the camera hole is a bit too small to allow the flash to work well and sometimes obscures the camera, though this has gotten worse as the device can now slide around as explained above. Definitely a solid purchase but time to go back to the separate wallet and watch sadly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great family game, April 13, 2014

This review is from: Jamaica (Toy)
I'm an avid board gamer but most of my favorite games are too long or intimidating to teach to just anyone. However Jamaica proudly sits next to Catan on my shelf as that game for everyone. Firstly, and most important to a intro game, this thing is a work of art. From the fantastic box insert to the panoramic player cards, it's clear this game was lovingly crafted.

The game play is straight forward but fun. Strategy is limited but still present enough to satisfy more avid gamers. Best of all the experience is quick, normally ending in a half hour. Definitely more players is better but the two player variant can be amusing as well. Thoroughly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic strategy game but not for all, April 13, 2014
This review is from: Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar (Toy)
I'm not going to lie, I bought Tzolk'in because I saw it had gears. "A board game with gears?" I thought. This could not be passed up. And I was not disappointed. However this game is definitely not for everyone. If you love planning and strategy, this is the pinnacle of the worker placement genre. However it's complexity can easily scare others away.

In Tzolk'in, you and your friends compete to build the greatest Mayan civilization. There are many paths to victory and earning the most victory points. Will you focus on architecture, theology, agriculture, or trade? Which are most viable will vary game to game but a combination is often required for the greatest success.

The pleasure in the game comes from the amount of planning one can do. Theoretically you could plan out the entire game from turn one which is why I might not suggest this to your Rain Man friends (or at least get an hour glass involved). Each turn you either place or pick up workers on any of five wheels. These wheels, and the workers on them, advance as the game progresses and provide the game's various resources and actions. The mechanic is elegant and the symbols used through the components are intuitive once you get the hang of them.

This game is a masterpiece of design, from the art to the way it plays. My main gripe is how difficult it is to teach. The way in which each mechanic depends on others, in addition to high impact of each turn, makes it near impossible to teach as you play. As such, I often go hoarse explaining the many interlocking components of gameplay. Secondly, the amount of player interaction is limited to blocking opponents workers with your own, stealing buildings out from others, or moving the starting player marker. This makes the game a bit of a lonely experience, however this improves with the more players you have.

All in all a great game but most definitely a gamer's game.

I'm not a huge chiptune fan but this album has me hooked. I especially love the touches of vocals here and there. It's overflowing with energy on every track. As my friend said "When I listen to this all I can think of is someone throwing up rainbows...pixelated rainbows."

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Unique, January 26, 2014
Only played once so far but this game is great. I love games with novel ideas and components which this box has in spades. The game is quick and accessible. A great one to have in your back pocket to surprise people who would never normally go for board games. Just tell them you have a game where string is a vital component and I guarantee they'll be curious. Add to that that the games are super quick, around 15 minutes, and you're looking at about a 30 minute experience for new timers (with rules explanation).

Each turn you each draw a station card, place it, then lay a "rail" aka string. Stations have different abilities and point values to spice things up. You also want to avoid the natural features of the play area, a mountain and river, as well as other players' rails. Each player only has five strings so there are only five turns.

I have to to take away a star because the rules were clearly written by someone who wasn't extremely familiar with English. While there are no outright errors, they're worded quite confusingly. This game probably doesn't have an extreme amount of depth but is portable, quick, and innovative. Kudos all around.

This track is too hot for words. I can't wait for their full album. It makes me move every time and makes me happy no matter what my mood. Plus, it makes me want to pop 'n' lock like no other. Definitely watch the music video. It's almost better than the track itself.
