Momentary Mother
Momentary Mother
by Lisa De Niscia
Edition: Paperback
Price: $18.00
23 used & new from $2.48

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Surprise, April 14, 2016
This review is from: Momentary Mother (Paperback)
"How was your flight?" Lulu, our protagonist asks her mother upon arrival at LAX. Viviana, the mother of a good many of us, reports it was, "Bumpy the whole way." It's an apt description of the mother/daughter dynamic in Lisa De Niscia's delightful novel, MOMENTARY MOTHER, in which a daughter's search for maternal respect and approval is met with lasagna and pie a la mode. And Lulu's familial problems hardly end there. There's her father, Sal. the unsuccessful peacemaker, ("Everyone appreciates your ravioli," he assures his wife,) and her sister, Cat, a coddled stay-at-home who attempted suicide via a vitamin overdose.
Of course there are more serious arrows in Ms. De Niscia's quiver--including Lulu's constant soul searching regarding the termination of a pregnancy--but the novel never falls into melodrama. Credit that on the author's expert use of dialogue which throughout MOMENTARY MOTHER is as sharp as a freshly-creased shirt.

I liked all these stories, but I LOVED the title story, as well as "Pitching," and "The Buddy System."

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Happening!, December 5, 2015
This review is from: Ball(s) (Paperback)
Imagine being invited to a huge party where you know no one. Once you arrive, you're amazed to find that each guest is both fun and fascinating, and that you never ever want to leave.

Such is the shindig author Lew Holton is throwing and the venue is his very, very funny novel, BALL(S).

Casey Frye is the book's protagonist, or perhaps more accurately, our guide through this labyrinth of lovably strange characters and mind-blowing happenstances. Think Ebenezer Scrooge visited by the Addams family on unicycles. The funniest entourage of rogues and scoundrels--every age and every gender--this side of GREATER TUNA.

Is BALL(S) irreverent, perhaps even imprudent? Of course it is. But that's part of the appeal. Do not make the mistake of thinking that testicular cancer, tragedy that it may be, cannot also be downright hilarious.

Got device and learned (after hours of trying) that it was not compatible with my LG E970 phone. Sent it back (my cost) and explained. Today they sent me a second one.

Update: Customer service refuses to refund my money and suggests I "give the device to another family member."

To the Left of the Microwave
To the Left of the Microwave

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, November 2, 2014
"Less is more," the protagonist Deborah tells her friend in the beautifully realized story "Seat Belt." And in Lisa De Niscia's often funny, often heartbreaking collection, TO THE LEFT OF THE MICROWAVE, this seems to be Ms. De Niscia's writing philosophy as well. Most of the stories (and one play) are brief and minimalistic, but their impact is stunning. We meet a 16-year old girl, disdainful of her mother but in total fear of being without her; a literacy volunteer who winds up learning a bigger lesson than she ever intended to teach; a 13-year old who, by story's end, knows more about loyalty and unconditional love than the adults she studies through her front window. "Seat Belt" may be the biggest pleasure of all. It's a tale of interracial love, and of prejudice coming from a very unsuspected place. To tell more might spoil De Niscia's carefully constructed plot; I'll let readers discover the joy of this story for themselves.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Ever!, June 19, 2014
A couple of months beyond warranty, the problems started. Items in the refrigerator section were freezing despite changing settings. A $300 repair bill later, water began puddling onto the floor. Calls to both Amana and the retailer were met with sympathy, but we were told that "these things happen to computerized appliances" and that the next time we should invest in an extended warranty. We'll cut our losses, dump the Amana, chalk it up as an expensive lesson learned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stolen Cigarettes, June 8, 2014
Lew Holton manages to do something in "The Season of Preacher Jack" that is no easy task. He successfully uses the point of view of an eleven year old boy to narrate this highly entertaining and very moving story of growing up in a small southern town circa 1961. Although the novel is filled with episodes that will delight, Holton does not shy away from loftier topics, including segregation, family dysfunction, and religious hypocrisy. "The Season of Preacher Jack," is both a coming-of-age story and a spellbinding read.

Ran okay for about two years of relatively light use, but now picks up nothing more than dust and dry leaves. I've replaced the dust filter, but it didn't help.

5.0 out of 5 stars DeFelice does it again!, April 14, 2012
This review is from: The Helios Conspiracy (Hardcover)
Slowly but surely, Andy Fisher is becoming a true American hero. As funny as he is effective, DeFelice's antagonist is like a modern day Columbo. And in The Helios Conspiracy," Andy Fisher rises to new heights. Whether he's referring to ancient Ming Dynasty vases as "nice pots," or drinking gallons of stale coffee at the Sunrise '50 Diner, Fisher never fails to entertain. Particularly noteworthy this time around is DeFelice's terrific use of dialogue. The author keeps the conversation flowing, but it's always in support of character and plot development. An intriguing read that never fails to find both humor and suspense in the human condition.
