4.0 out of 5 stars 30th Anniversary Edition is strictly for die hard Collectors, July 20, 2002
This 2-cd set of Bowie's classic 1972 release is nicely packaged with a 40 page booklet of rare photos, info.,etc. in a gatefold hard case. The first cd is the complete remastered album. The second disc has outakes, remixes, and some unreleased tracks. I have to agree with one other reviewer in that this is an overpriced 2 cd set that could have easily been one cd. Again, this is another attempt by a record label to squeeze every nickel they can out of consumers. Bowie's classic "The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust" album clearly demonstrates Bowie's fascination with aliens, spaceships, etc. Bowie's songwriting has always been his strong point as is the case with this cd. Certainly no one can deny Bowie was ahead of his time back in 1972 when rock groups like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and art rock bands such as The Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer were what the public were listening too. Perhaps Bowie's music was too futuristic and radio stations seemed reluctant to play his music in heavy rotation. Rykodisc also released a limited edition version of this album about 12 years ago which included a rather lengthy booklet containing alot of intersting info. on Bowie at a much lower price. The Rykodisc special edition also had extra bonus tracks (as did many of the Rykodisc versions of Bowie's albums). Those lucky enough to have picked that version up will no doubt pass on this 30th Anniversary collection. For the most part this collection is really for die hard Bowie collectors. The regular remastered album version should suffice for most buyers. Highly Recommened for disc one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Bee Gees Collection You'll Ever Need!, June 21, 2002
This two cd hits collection from The Bee Gees represents over 30 years of their music. Originally a melodic soft rock band from the sixties then turning disco in the mid-seventies, The Bee Gees are one group that has diversity and style. Early songs such as "To Love Somebody" and "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" represent the songwriting talents of the Gibb Brothers. Many compare the Bee Gees to The Beatles which there are similarities in the terrific songwriting and harmonies they display. The Bee Gees popularity soared to gigantic proporations when The Bee Gees wrote and performed many of the songs for the disco soundtrack "Saturday Night Fever". Some die hards wrote them off as trying to cash in on the disco craze when actually this was some of their best music ever. How can you dislike songs like "More Than A Woman", "How Deep Is Your Love", "Stayin' Alive" or "Night Fever"? Great songs all. This collection contains songs all the way to 2001 - quite a nice collection indeed. Remastered with nice packaging make this collection a must have for Bee Gees,Disco or Rock fans alike. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 80's Metal From Germany's Best!, May 30, 2002
If you don't own any Scorpions Best Of or Greatest Hits cd's than this is a nice collection to own. If you want to have a more complete collection then you'll have to fork out more dollars for the two cd package called "Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years". This Scorpions greatest hits cd has all their good songs from 1979's "Love Drive" album to 1993's "Feel The Heat". Also included are two new tracks. The Scorpions didn't make much of a dent in rock here in the U.S. until the 80's (although they were popular in Europe and Japan). With the help of MTV with videos like "No One Like You" and "Rock You Like A Hurricane" the Scorpions became a household name. This 24-bit digitally remastered cd sounds great, much better than some other hits cd's i've heard. Fans of groups such as Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and AC/DC, etc. will love this new collection. Five stars for song selection and sound quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Purple's Absolute Best!, May 27, 2002
This review is from: Machine Head (Audio CD)
Deep Purple were always one of my favorite bands from their early days when I first heard "Hush" on the radio. "Machine Head", their third l.p. with Ian Gillian, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Ian Paice and Jon Lord is their best effort to date. There isn't a bad song on this album - period. This is the quintenssial rock album! Blackmore's guitar riffs are awesome as are Jon Lord's keyboard playing. Ian Gillian has got to be one of rock's best vocalist along with Zeppelin's Robert Plant. This band had such talent, it's unfortunate that this lineup didn't record more in the 70's. Eventually Gillian, Glover and Blackmore left the group and replacements were made, but the classic line up in this album will always be what made Deep Purple what they were - one of the world's best (and loudest) rock bands ever. If there's one rock cd you buy from the 70's this should be it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice New Wave Rock From Donnie Iris!, May 24, 2002
I really liked Donnie Iris's album "Back On The Streets" which included the hit "Ah Leah" which in my opinion was his best song. The other songs on this 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Donnie Iris are really good with a few standouts. Other than the above hit "Ah Leah" you've got "Love Is Like A Rock"," That's The Way Love Ought To Be", "Do You Compute" and an excellent "live" version of "The Rapper", originally an early seventies hit for The Jaggerz. Iris had a knack for writing some pretty catchy songs, many of which are kind of corny but still good none-the-less. If you like groups like The Rubinoos, The Plimsouls, The Knack or The Romantics then you'll certainly enjoy this collection. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Classic Car Chase Movie!, May 19, 2002
I remember seeing this movie in the theater in 1971 and had always wanted it on tape. I would check my local t.v. listing to see if it would be shown. but no luck. Thankfully it has been released on VHS for it's second time. The packaging is different on the first VHS release of Vanishing Point. Starring Barry Newman as a an ex-cop and race car driver named Kowalski, his job is to drive a suped up 1970 Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 24 hours or less. He drives the state cops nuts with his antics and soon all the state troopers from Colorado to California are after him. As he drives this musclecar he flashes back images to his days a a cop, his affair with a girlfriend hippy and as a race car driver. He has the help of Super Soul (Cleavon Little) a small town disc jocky helping him and letting him know which routes are crawling with cops. But the appeal of this movie are the amazing car chase scenes which in my opinion are some of the best I've seen (along with "Gone in 60 Seconds). If you enjoy car movies like this one, by all means pick this movie up before it's deleted. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Glam Rocker's Finest Ever!, May 8, 2002
This review is from: Desolation Boulevard (Audio CD)
Released in 1974 "Desolution Boulevard" produced two hits from this l.p. which one could hear on radio back then. These were , "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox On The Run". Though both were excellent I felt the other songs on the l.p. to be superior. The Sweet who were considered a glam rock group (and released a bublegum hit in the early 70's called "Little Willy) became very metal rock oriented with the release of this l.p... Listen to "Set Me Free" or "Sweet F.A.". Both are classic metal for that period of time. One thing I always liked about the group was the harmonizing. Very similar (almost too much) to the rock group Queen. This l.p. and it's followup "Give Us A Wink" (which produced the hit "Action")were really the last of the metal oriented Sweet. In 1978 they did release a gem of a song called "Love is like Oxygen" but after that in my opinion The Sweet were pretty much a thing of the past. This really is the cd to buy if your into 70's metal. If you can pick up the European version of "Desolution Boulevard" which has been remastered and includes a very different version of "Fox On The Run" then I would grab that one also. Highly recommmeded!

5.0 out of 5 stars This maybe Mott The Hoople's Best L.P. ever., April 28, 2002
This review is from: All the Young Dudes (Audio CD)
Released in 1972 debuting on Columbia Records, "All The Young Dudes" was David Bowie's attempt to save this band from demise. Bowie wrote the title track "All The Young Dudes" for Mott and it became a hit for them, thus saving them from breaking up. The entire album (or cd in this case) is a gem of cleaverly written songs, some by Bowie, Lou Reed and Mott members Ian Hunter,Mick Ralphs, Verdon Allen and Overend Watts. This l.p. represents a more mature Mott than, say their previous releases. Songs such as "Jerkin Crokus", "Mamas Little Jewel","One Of The Boys", and "Ready For Love" show the creativity of the band. Ian Hunter's Dylanish voice is certainly up to par on this release as is guitarist Mick Ralphs guitar licks. Mott The Hoople was part of the glam rock scene that was emerging in England. Groups such as Bowie & his Spiders From Mars, T-Rex and The Sweet were some of the top glam groups at that time. This is one of those albums that seems to never grow old, but betters with age. A definate must for classic rock aficianados. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Scorpion's Masterpiece!, April 24, 2002
This review is from: Lonesome Crow (Audio CD)
First off let me repeat what another reviewer has said of this cd. This is not The Scorpions that put out songs such as "Rock You Like A Hurricane" or "No One Like You"! Granted several of the original members (Klause Meine, and Rudolf Schenker) remianed in the band but that's it. This cd represents a very young Scorpions. I hear some Black Sabbath influences from the then young guitarist extroardinaire Michael Schenker (16 years old). The drums and bass section in this band are the best that I've heard from The Scorpions. I agree with the above reviewer in that Wolfgang Dziony is a better drummer than Herman Rarebell and bassist Lothar Heimberg is a terrific bass player. Too bad these memebers didn't remain with The Scorpions throughout their RCA label days. I still prefer The 70's sounding Scorpions over the eighties rock they created. Albums such as "Fly To The Rainbow", "In Trance", and "Virgin Killer" are classics. Too bad RCA here in the U.S. doesn't get on the ball and remaster and re-issue those cd's. Now back to this cd. Songs such as the title track "Lonesome Crow"( at over 13 mins. long) are very guitar driven and the song itself is progressive in The Jethro Tull vein. Another standout cut is "In Search Of The Piece Of Mind". This is an acoustic guitar driven track with Klause Meine sounding topnotch as ever and Michael Schenker as usual adds his special guitar touch. The song "I'm Going Mad" has a nice chant at the beginning with Meine's vocals reduced somewhat. The chant continues through most of the song. And I can't help but hear that Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) guitar influence in Schenker's playing. The remaining songs are also excellent but I repeat this cd is not for everyone. If you enjoy progressive and unusual sounding rock then pick this classic up before it becomes deleted. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Heavy Metal Rock From A Highly Underated Group!, March 17, 2002
This review is from: Vincebus Eruptum (Audio CD)
Blue Cheer released this debut in 1968 when groups and artists like Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf and The Doors were putting out psychedelic rock. Blue Cheer were three guys who played loud psychedelic rock and I can still see those stacks of Marshall amps piled a mile high. These guys had one major hit "Summertime Blues" which has been covered by other artists. Their version stands alone by itself as my favorite. The other songs on this album such as "Out Of Focus" and "Parchment Farm" are pure psychedelic kick a.. rock. This groups follow up album "Outsideinside" was also much of the same. Too bad these guys didn't get the credit they deserved and were lost in the shuffle of all the psychedelic groups popping up in the late 60's. If you're into 60's psychedelic rock don't pass this gem up. Highly recommended!
