This review is from: M*A*S*H TV Season 10 (DVD)
I purchased this video (season 10) as part of the COMPLETE SERIES which ran for 11 seasons.
It was one of the finest TV shows EVER, when it was aired originally. Not surprisingly, it remains so decades later. Excellence, in any form, lasts a lifetime. It is no mere chance that I enjoy watching this marvellous Series over and over. The casting is superlative - as is the performance of all the main characters. No praise is too high, for everything concerning this first rate serio-comic TV classic.

This magnificent situation comedy deserved the best in reproduction. IT HAS IT, in this magnificent DVD collection of the entire series.

The editing - in particular the very efficient manouvering to achieve the exact episode/portion one wishes to view and the chance to easiliy correct a wrong choice/selection, is truly masterful.

There can never be a more efficient and trouble free rendition of the truly wonderful original show, than this complete set of Third Rock provides. Very few reproductions, of original productions, reach the astoundingly high standards of this reproduction of Third Rock. Well done!

2.0 out of 5 stars Could and should have been better., August 8, 2011
This review is from: A History of Scotland (DVD)
Neil Oliver first came to my notice through the excellent BBC programme 'COAST'. His engaging and easy going manner added hugely to the programmes worth, in my opinion and, after he had been THE narator and become a segment narator, his easy manner and love of his subject became even more pronounced.

Consequently, I was very keen to view his 'Hisoty of Scotland'. The History started off quite well, with the early hisotry found ost interesting - and largely completely untold previously. Sadly the promise was not fulfilled!

The closer one got to the 'modern times', the more the Hisotry became 'political' and hugely a record of personal opinion. It wasn't that all the views were clearly incorrect or fallacious, but many were most certainly arguable, For axample, the reasons for the death of the Shipbuilding industry, the Coal mineing industry, the huge alteration in the Steel industry and the nationalised Rail Service were all reported in a very one-sided manner.

In some nstances throughout the programme, fairness was clearly exercised, but sadly not uniformly. This detracted greatly from the programmme's worth and value.

As others have alluded, many great characters in Scotalnd's hisotry were missing from the owrk - or greatly minimised in the telling. Others, were glorified beyond worth.

No! One has to state that parts of the history were interesting, but the worth of the views suffered because of the bias show in other aspects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Morse overshadowed ------------ just!, September 27, 2010
This review is from: Inspector Lewis: Series 3 (DVD)
I own the entire Morse series and, over the years, have watched every episode many times over. I have watched the series, with the greatest pleasure and admiration. John Thaw, as Morse, is superb and the entire series is most expertly produced. The all round excellence puts the Morse series in a class of its own - NEARLY!

Lewis has superseded the legend and this finely acted and superbly produced series MUST, NOW, TAKE PRIDE OF PLACE!

Lewis's transformation - from being subordinate as a Sergeant, to being in charge as an Inspector - has been accomplished with great skill and acting ability. The story lines and the outstanding photography carry the 'Detective genre' a few steps forward - even from Morse.

Lewis is a pre-eminent series - with both Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox showing outstanding acting ability. If you enjoyed Morse - and who didn't? - you cam purchase Lewis with the utmost confidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photography - lousy script!, September 17, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Scotland Revealed (DVD)
The photography, displayed in this admirable DVD depicting Scotland, is outstanding - truly outstanding. However,it would have improved the DVD if ground shots had been employed - if only to emphasise some aspects of the marvelous country and its numerous and truly worthwhile attributes.

While the general impact of this highly worthwhile DVD is most favourable, it has to be said that constant repetition - of both script and film shots - becomes extremely wearing very shortly. An estimated 10 to 15 EXTRA minutes of film is thought to have been possible if only the producers/editors had overcome their wearisome desire to repeat so much of this DVD - obviously, to accommodate the adaptation of the complete work into half hour segments. The 'voice-over' commentary is weak enough, without the annoyance of having so much repeated - ad nauseum!

Nevertheless, a worth while DVD showing some of the very many outstanding features of a most outstandingly beautiful country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cops & Robbers - old style!, August 18, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Sweeney Series Two (DVD)
Once upon a time, up until - maybe - the middle or late 1960's, the Metropolitan Police of London, England, were a proud and (for the age) effective force against crime and criminals.(Remember, this was before personal radios were standard equipment, telephones were FAR from being universally available and the Force was about 20% understrength. The well known, modern, scientific advances in the detection of crime were unheard of and far from becoming available. The Police were unarmed (except for a small 12 inch truncheon (night-stick).

In spite of these apparent disadvantages, the Police were able to hold their own in preventing crime - utilizing Officers patrolling the streets - and in the detection of crime - largely utilizing a large 'network' of Informants and undercover officers.

Extreme and totally unnecessary Puritanical thinking by (non Police) Senior Officers, resulted in a catastrophic and debilitating reorganisation of the Metropolitan Police. This resulted, directly, to the sad state of affairs that exists today. Today, few have any respect of the Police and where, once, many people would be willing to provide information and generally assist the Police, today virtually none does.

The Sweeney is a dramatisation of a select group of men who formed the Flying Squad in the good and effective days of the Metropolitan Police. The Flying Squad was charged with the detection of large scale or particularly heinous crimes - other than Murder. The 'Squad' was remarkably effective and was once much feared by the villains due to its effectiveness - and 'no nonsense' approach to thief taking!

Of course 'lines' were crossed! It would be inane to suggest that all Police are pristine in character and actions. However, over a century of serving the Metropolis had made it obvious that when dealing with unscrupulous, immoral criminals, one is hampered by being forced to wear kid gloves! The result of being forced to wear kid gloves and call everyone Sir - or Madam -has resulted in the debacle that is the Metropolitan Police today. There is no 'bite' and, therefore, no effectiveness in much of today's Policing. (Due to huge advances in scientific detection, a few types of crime are being successfully detected these days, but overall success in the detection of many crimes against the person or which affect individuals greatly are virtually ignored and remain but filed 'Reports' of un-investigated crime. The Public, today, are ill served by a largely ineffectual Police.

The Sweeney, dramatises the work of the 'Flying Squad' in its glory days. Some licence is taken, but it is largely a fair and accurate depiction of the work the Squad did at one time - prior to the Puritanical re-organisation. It was a huge success when first aired and won praise for its authenticity. It is a good and exciting series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amadeus who?, March 21, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Amadeus (DVD)
This movie is superbly produced and acted. One is transported back to those days of Patrons of the Arts and fashionable Salons ruled over by the matriarchs of local society. Mozart doesn't come out of history with too much credit and for his sake, it might have been better had this film - and history generally - had skipped over his private life and character. His music, on the other hand, lives on and delights all music lovers to this day. Mozart was certainly a paradox of supreme proportions.

For those of us who enjoy and respect Steve McQueen's acting ability, this collection is almost faultless. ALMOST, because 'Never So Few' has been included in the collection - obviously to sell an unsellable movie!

Bullitt, The Getaway, The Cincinnati Kid, Papillon and Tom Horn are acknowledged classics - rightly so. However, Never so Few is unadulterated rubbish, from first to last.

In fairness, however, one has to say that the 5 excellent movies make the cost of this 'Collection' well worth while.

Fans of Steve McQueen and those who enjoy quality movies with good acting and good scripts will delight in this 'Collection' - in spite of the putrescent Never so Few!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not REALLY Hitchcock - I think!, January 7, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This 'Collection' of short mysteries is quite enjoyable in many ways. Like all 'Collections' of this sort, some stories are better than others. Also, to be taken into consideration is the fact that these 'tales' were half hour 'pot boilers' for the TV medium. These were NOT Hitchcock directed!

All in all a good mix of suspense stories. Some are excellent while one or two are nothing to write home about. This DVD "Collection' is certainly worth while owning, if one enjoys a good well acted tale. Just don't expect the quality of a full length Hitchcock movie!

Who hasn't heard of Snow White? A Classic ever since Grimm included it in his legendary Fairy Tales. The simple tale of a wicked Queen who, because of being jealous of the beauty of Snow White, forces her to flee her palace home and find refuge in a cottage deep in the forest. The cottage is home for a group of disparate little people who work in a mine in the forest. The cottage is in a shambolic shape - which Snow White puts right. The little people and Snow White live idyllically - until the Queen tracks her down and poisons her with an apple. Much sadness ensues, until a handsome Prince arrives and, with a kiss, revives the drugged Snow White.

The scenes, in and of the forest, are simply magnificent. No wonder that Walt Disney became a household word and his new form of cinematography became so world famous that it survives long after his death. Snow White started a cinematographic genre. Long may children be absolutely delighted and thrilled by it.

This DVD is as close to perfection as I have ever come across.
