3.0 out of 5 stars The battle between Walt Disney and Mrs. Travers for Mary Poppins., November 29, 2014
This review is from: Saving Mr. Banks (DVD)
Saving Mr. Banks (2013). Rated "PG-13". Running Time: 2 hours, 05 mins.
Directed by John Lee Hancock. Written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith.

This is the story of Pamela L. Travers (Emma Thompson). We see her childhood in 1906 in England. In April 1961, at the suggestion of her agent, he pleads her to go to the United States to sell her story of Mary Poppins to Walt Disney. She just doesn't want to. it is her character. Her agent reminds her she does need the money. She decides she would like to keep her house.
So she flies to Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Travers is quite cantankerous. She is not amused by the complimentary gifts and fruit basket she has received from Walt Disney. She throws the fruit into the pool of the Beverly Hills Hotel. She has a studio driver, Ralph (Paul Giamatti) that drives her to Burbank at the alt Disney Productions. There, she meets screenwriter Don DaGradi (Bradley Whitford) and the Sherman brothers, Robert (B.J. Novak) and Richard (Jason Schwartzman). Then finally Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) himself who is very nice and welcoming to her, but Mrs. Travers, as she prefers to be called, is still stuffy. Walt Disney has been trying to obtain "Mary Poppins" for 18 years from the first time he read the book 20 years years ago.
Walt and the Sherman brothers have wonderful ideas for the Mary Poppins movie and making it a delightful musical, but Mrs. Travers wants to be difficult in every way, putting in her own creative control, before papers are signed.
We shall see who wins.

Also in the cast: Colin Farrell, Annie Rose Buckley, Ruth Wilson, Kathy Baker, Rachel Griffiths, Ronan Vibert.

I thought Tom Hanks did well in portraying Walt Disney.

Some scenes were actually filmed inside Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

Also filmed at Ontario, Burbank, Los Angeles, Highland Park, Arcadia, Campo, Simi Valley, Hollywood, California.
Some scenes filmed at Universal Studios.

In-film advertising: TWA airlines, Warner Bros, MGM, RTD buses.

Option of Language: English, French, Spanish, English Descriptive Video Service.
Option of Subtitles: English, French, Spanish.

Can you find Mickey Mouse through the Option Menu? Hint: Set Up.

Bonus Feature: Deleted Scene, Nanny Song.

I'm still waiting for someone to make the Walt Disney Story into an epic motion picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars People are trapped up in a skyscrapper on fire., November 29, 2014
This review is for the 2-disc DVD release in 2005.

The Towering Inferno (1974). Rated "PG". Running Time: 2 hours, 44 mins.
Directed by John Guillermin and Irwin Allen (action scenes). Produced by Irwin Allen and Sidney Marshall. Original score music by John Williams.

Based upon the novels, The Tower, by Richard Martin Stern, and The Glass Tower by Thomas N. Scortia & Frank M. Robinson.

Screenplay by Stirling Silliphant.

Presented by 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros.

A new, modern skyscraper, the tallest, is having its Grand Opening today in San Francisco, California. The architect, Doug Roberts (Paul Newman), has flown in by helicopter to attend the Grande Party to be held up in the glass tower after the official dedication. Many people will attend the party including Senator Parker (Robert Vaughn) and Mayor Ramsay (Jack Collins) and his wife, Paula (Sheila Allen).
On this first day, a fire begins in a utility room from faulty wiring. A security guard, Jernigan (O.J. Simpson) says a fire sensor went off and it has failed to contact the fire department. The fire can not be seen on a security camera.

As the party begins, the fire continues to spread and our all-star cast becomes trapped. Who will get out alive?

Also in the cast: William Holden, Normann Burton, Jennifer Rhodes, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, Jennifer Jones, Carlena Gower, Mike Lookinland, Robert Wagner, Susan Blakely, Richard Chamberlain, Susan Flannery, Maureen McGovern, Gregory Sierra, Steve McQueen, Scott Newman, Dabney Coleman.

That is Maureen McGovern singing "We May Never Love Like This Again". You may have seen her in the past Muscular Dystrophy Association telethons and on Broadway stage productions.

Scott Newman is Paul Newman's son.

Sheila Allen is Irwin Allen's wife. In this film, she plays the Mayor's wife. I have always remembered the scene of her walking up the red carpet seeing her hair-style making her look prominent and wonderful.
I was 11 years old when I first saw this movie at the Drive-In.

This movie is dedicated to all firefighters around the world. If this movie encouraged anything, it was the installation of ceiling water sprinklers and change of construction and fire code laws.

Filmed in San Francisco, California at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Fairmont Hotel and Bank of America. Also on the 20th Century Fox Studios in Century City, California.

This movie is considered to be one of the best all-star cast disaster films of the 1970's including:

Airport 1975 (1974),
Airport '77 (1977),

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Rated "R". Running Time: 2 hours, 59 mins.
Directed by Martin Scorsese. Written by Terence Winter.

Jordon Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a stockbroker. he has an estate, a white car, loves sex with women and does cocaine and morphine. One hundred dollar bills mean nothing to him. He wads them up and throws them in the trash can because he is so rich. To tell you his graphic story, we go back to when he was 22-years old, just starting is job on Wall Street.
He was a good person, until he met the company executive, Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey). With the experience Jordan has gained, he wants more money. A lot of it. So with his new friend, Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill), who worked for a furniture store, he begins his own stock company, Stratton Oakmont.
While the firm becomes successful and continues to expand, there are no work ethics and is low on morals. The office has some unprofessional workers who do lewd, elicit sex acts in front of everyone. Their is corruption and security frauds. Jordan doesn't care. He just wants the money to roll in. What Jordan does not know yet, someone inside is investigating the company.

Also in the cast: Rob Reiner, Kyle Chandler, Jon Bernthal, Margot Robbie, Jon Favreau, Bo Dietl, Jean DuJardin, Joanna Lumley, Christine Ebersole, Kenneth Choi, Fran Lebowitz, Spike Jonze.

I'm still laughing at the television/phone scenes with Rob Reiner.

The real Jordan Belfort appears towards the end of the film. He introduces Leonardo DiCaprio as "Belfort".

Contains Full frontal female nudity. Some male nudity.

Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor, Jonah Hill for Supporting Actor, Martin Scorsese for Directing, writing-adapted screenplay.

Option of Language and subtitles: English, French, Spanish. English Audio Description.

While the running time is near 3 hours, it had to be edited down for nudity, sexual content and drug use, so it did not receive a rating of "NC-17", An "NC-17 rating would not have given the movie a wide theatrical release.
A 4-hour version was planned to be released for DVD, but the plans did not happen in 2014.

A lot of this movie will be edited down if ever shown on broadcast television.

Went overboard on cursing and using the "f" word, 569 times.

This review is from: The Last Airbender (DVD)
The Last Airbender (2010). Rated PG. Running Time: One Hour, 43 mins.
Directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan.

Book One: Water. Katara (Nicola Peltz) is using her powers to rise an orb of water out of the icy lake. However, it is her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), now in human form. Practice, practice. Sokka and Katara are part of the Southern Water Tribe. They continue to hunt. Under the icy ground is a light. Sokka breaks the ice and a huge frozen sphere emerges. The image of a boy appears. Katara pops a hole into the sphere against her brother's orders. She is thrown back by a mighty force and the sphere breaks up. A special small boy, Aang (Noah Ringer) is inside. He is alive and resting. His flying bison, Appa, is with him also resting. The boy has a decorative arrow tattooed from the back of his neck, around his head to his forehead. Aang has been missing for 100 years until now. He ran away from his people when he was told he was the Avatar. He meant to return, but he became trapped under the ocean water.
Now he must help Sokka and Katara, but first, he must be trained. First, he must finish the Air cycle. Then be trained in Water, Earth and Fire.

Also in the cast: Dev Patel, Shaun Toub, Cliff Curtis, Seychelle Gabriel.
Dee Bradley Baker does the voice of "Appa" and "Momo".

Jackson Rathbone is not related to Basil Rathbone.

Filmed in Greenland. Vietnam. West Rockhill and Reading, Pennsylvania.

At times, the color of the film is awful. Might have been better filmed in digital.
Some teenagers and adults might make fun of the back of the hairstyle of "Princess Yue", a phallic symbol.

I think we are done with The Karate Kid stuff for another 30 years.

If the film had a bigger budget and better screenwriting, it could have been made like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. However, M. Night Shyamalan is known for making small story-telling films.

Have you ever seen a 12-year old work so hard in a movie before? Good work, Noah Ringer. He actually does have a first-degree black-belt.

Perhaps, if they wanted to re-boot Kung Fu: The Complete Series Collection. They might cast Noah Ringer when he is older.

You can also see Noah Ringer in Cowboys & Aliens - Extended Edition (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2011).
