1.0 out of 5 stars Misrepresented-- no tie between letters & quilt blocks., September 28, 2014
The book has nothing to relate quilts & letters from WWII. The letters are valuable, first-person history lessons. The blocks are just made up
blocks that have nothing to do with the times, letters, etc. Not very interesting blocks, not good instructions. The book would be very good in
another category (WWII, 1940's history, etc.) but zero to do with quilts. Title is absolutely misleading. Would not purchase another book by
this author without seeing it first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Questionable Reviews, November 19, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm puzzled about the reviews. I did order the book based on the highly rated reviews. I'm sure all the various methods of piecing are covered on the CD, and a number of them are very complicated, and used pieces not easily drawn or cut out by "reasonable" measurements.....like to quarter, or even eighth inch dimensions. So I think a computer (either for the CD or printing the templates will be essential. I do agree with all the 4 & 5 star writers that the stories and quilt pictures are wonderful. But in re-reading the reviews very carefully, I noted that only #3 reviewer mentioned making any blocks from the book. So back to my first sentence. Are the 4 & 5 star ratings simply based on the stories & pictures, or have those reviewers attempted the blocks. If that is true, it seems to me the reviews are not reliable. Kansas Quilter

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what it promises, April 18, 2010
The book review says "everything you need to create.....quilt." Well, that's not true. The book itself does not contain any patterns. If you just want to read the stories it's very nice. If you want to quilt--things are lacking. In addition to the book you'll need a computer and lots of paper. For quilters who don't have or use computers, having to have the patterns printed for them at a copy store will add perhaps $l0 to $15 to the cost of the book. Some 100+ pages of patterns. As other reviewers have noted that's excessive. One little pattern piece per page. In addition, I didn't catch in the reviews that there are errors in the book. It's necessary to go to the book's website and find a list of errors and their corrections. I've done a lot of sampler quilts and most of those patterns have written and printed pattern instructions on 8 pages or so. Nice stories--otherwise big disappointment, inconvenient, and added expense to create a quilt.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge the book by its cover, July 8, 2007
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I think I'll become a smarter book buyer after purchasing this book. Should have read the description & review before buying it. Subtitle "Quilts in the Newspaper" is not quite accurate--they're not newspaper patterns, they're Ms. Brackman's patterns. The cover depicts actual newspaper clippings of several partial patterns, none of which seem to be basket patterns. However.......the whole book is basket patterns. I think the title is deceptive and would more appropriately be Basket Quilts.... If you want a lot of basket patterns this book's for you. If you don't, it isn't.
