The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game
The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game
by Mary Pilon
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $19.89

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling Tale of Greed and History, December 16, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
"The Monopolists" is a compelling tale of greed and the true history behind a major board game that is popular throughout the world. The book itself notes that some may find the idea of such a book silly, it being about a board game, but this is ridiculous. Monopoly is not only well-known throughout the world but is a massive business enterprise, easily a good subject for a book such as this.

"The Monopolists" reveals the behind-the-scenes details, stripping away the official story of the game's history. Truth be told, I hadn't really studied the history of the game myself, so most of the information about the "official" line was actually new to me also. But this book goes far behind that, revealing its humble origins as "The Landlord's Game" invented by a woman and the murky history that obscured this. It also covers the massive legal battle regarding the game Anti-Monopoly, a battle that ultimately resulted in a victory for the maker of that game, but not without the cost of time, health, and a marriage.

"The Monopolists" is sure to make an interesting read for anyone who is a fan of the board game or who likes to study stories of business. I do feel that a bit less time could have been spent on setup, and that some subjects could have been covered in a bit more depth. Also, the book didn't have an index. It would have been helpful to be able to look up any mention of something like "Charles Darrow" or "Quakers" and see which pages it's mentioned on. It would be nice if this is added for the final edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Designed Hairstyling Book, December 14, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I'm a guy, without any children, but I got this because I enjoy the Disney princess line and wanted to see the pictures within it. It has some wonderful pictures and especially enjoyed the ones for "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast."

The hairstyles themselves are quite detailed and come with useful step-by-step instructions, as well as pictures for each step of the process. They include hairstyles such as Ariel's Locks of the Ocean to Belle's Endless Braid to Tiana's Around the World. Also included is a helpful index of hairstyles by type and photos of real children with each hairstyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy, Easy-to-Use Pencil Sharpener, December 6, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
For an item of this type, a small plastic pencil sharpener, this is a rather useful item. It sharpens pencils well without eating them like some sharpeners. To my delight, it even does a good job with colored pencils. These have often been an issue for me with some sharpeners, but this one gets them nice and sharp, no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Useful and Well-made Pair of Headphones, December 4, 2014
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Up until recently, I've been using the Bluedio HT(shooting Brake) Wireless Bluetooth 4.1 Stereo Headphones (White). They're not bad, but I was thrilled to receive these, as they're in a completely different league. Much better sound, at least three times as comfortable and easy use.

These Turtle Beach headphones are wonderful headphones. The noise cancellation is excellent. The sound is clear and crisp and, unlike with the Brake headphones, I can adjust the volume at a reasonable level and get good sound. The buttons for Bluetooth, power and noise cancellation are all clear and easy to use. It comes with a handy soft carrying bag as well as cords for wired use on an airplane and for charging, though it holds a charge for at least fifteen hours anyway.

If you're ready for a high-end set of headphones, then I would say these are an excellent choice. You get exactly what they promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Well, Strong and Useful Stapler and Multi-tool, December 1, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This Bostich Dynamo stapler is both great at its stated purpose and an excellent multitool. It is capable of stapling through a reasonably thick set of papers for a stapler of this type and even comes with 210 included Bostich staples in a handy storage slot found on the bottom of the stapler. It has a sleek blue and black design. This, however, is not just a stapler. It also has added value by including both a pencil sharpener and a staple remover. Three convenient functions, all in one place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Security Alarm with Light, November 30, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a fairly good alarm with light. It includes two different options, a motion-sensitive alarm and a panic button. It also has a useful light feature. The alarm itself is reasonably loud, if a bit a more annoying-sounding than actually alarming. It may simply aggravate others in the area, but I know it'll definitely alert me if I'm in the area and someone were to try to make my stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Wonderful as Everyone Says, November 22, 2014

Standing at approximately 12" tall, this cute plush toy of Wonderheart Bear from "Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot" is truly wonderful. She is very soft, extremely cuddly and quite durable. It's a cute design, fairly true to the TV show and a vibrant pink color that is pleasant and not off-putting. Like other Care Bears, she comes with a hard red plastic heart on her tushy with the Care Bears logo. She also comes in a box with a DVD that includes the "Care Bears" episode "Show of Shyness" and a bonus "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" episode. It probably won't mean much to those who are already familiar backwards and forwards with those shows and it's also included with other plush Care Bears, but it's a nice little extra all the same.

This one is a winner for "Care Bears" fans and especially fans of little Wonderheart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful in Every Way, November 22, 2014
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There's a lot of plush toys floating around out there, so it's always nice to see one that's so well-made at a nice price. This cute plush of Benjamin Bunny from Nick Jr.'s adaptation of the "Peter Rabbit" books fits the bill for a perfect plush toy in every way. Top of the list and most important in my book is that he looks just like the character as seen on the show. No weird expression, no strange costuming, he looks like he just stepped right of the television show and onto the toy shelves. Secondly, he is soft, very soft. His lush brown fur and small, but not too small, size make him perfect for cuddling and he's even pettable, as if he were a real rabbit. Third, he is very sturdy and durable and likely to last for a long time. If you or your kid like the "Peter Rabbit" series, than this one is definitely a keeper and the other plush from this Cartwheel Kids line also.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for PlayStation 3, November 22, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Like another reviewer, I mistakenly chose to get these not realizing that they weren't designed for PlayStation 3. Chalk it up to just not paying attention, I guess, since it clearly says "PS4" in the listing. In any case, if you have a PlayStation 3, don't bother. It was a struggle for me to fit these on the controller and I couldn't get them to stay on. I tried inverting them, but I couldn't do it. Perhaps these provide a helpful grip, but if you don't have PlayStation 4, then they're not for you. Perhaps these will be of more use for me once I finally spring for a PlayStation 4 system.

Nivea for Men Energy Gift Set
Nivea for Men Energy Gift Set
3 used & new from $29.22

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Set of Grooming Products, November 22, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This set by Nivea is an excellent set of grooming products. There are a total of four items in all: the energy 3-in-1 body wash, the face scrub, the balm and the lip care. I was a bit worried when I saw the labeling on the body wash as it says it has mint in it and I have a strong aversion to the smell of mint. However, the smell of the mint is barely noticeable, if at all, so if you're also someone who doesn't like mint, don't worry about it. The other items are pretty neat too and the shave gel delivers a nice feel while moisturizing and cleaning the face well. Overall, this is a neat set of Nivea products at a nice price.
