3.0 out of 5 stars Very irritating beeps while charging., July 12, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The batteries are excellent. However, this charger emits quiet high-pitched "beeps" while charging. It is silent if there are no batteries in the unit. It beeps once every two seconds if one battery is being charged; once per second if two batteries are being charged; and twice per second if all four batteries are being charged. The beeps stop when all four batteries are fully charged.
Very irritating in a quiet room if one is within a few feet of the unit.
Will get another one and revise this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last chapter especially useful - when you should work alone - and when you shouldn't, May 20, 2014
Very practical, very specific. Good illustrations. As others have pointed out, sometimes a little repetitive.

The last chapter is especially useful:
* when you should work alone and when you shouldn't (for example, concrete only if less than a couple of yards)
* the pleasures and the downsides of working alone (examples: you control the radio, but you can get lonely)

The techniques he teaches are timeless. The tools he recommends are still available.

As it happens, if this book were to be written today, it would also discuss laser distance meters and smartphone apps (as covered in the "Fine Homebuilding" and "Journal of Light Construction" magazines and websites.)

The author has an excellent attitude and subtle sense of humor. (For example, his discussion about placing concrete is not only very helpful but also funny.)

Very useful and also enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language" - very good except for the romance., April 16, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: xkcd: volume 0 (Paperback)
The author calls it "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language."
The math and language are often very funny. (For example, the one about the heroes of open source.)
The sarcasm is often quite insightful. (I agree about Feynman.)
Sadly, the romance is rather repetitive and extremely depressing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lightly Salted Cashews received were very fresh, April 3, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Planters Lightly Salted Cashews are always excellent when I buy them at the store. In a couple of reviews, people were concerned about freshness of Planters nuts via Amazon. One data point: The cans I just received from Amazon have a somewhat newer date code than the delicious can I got last week at the store - and are also delicious. And much less expensive than at a grocery store.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to use the blade cover, April 3, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Discovered by accident how to use the blade cover. The blade cover unsnaps along the entire length of the blade by gently spreading it apart in a few places along the blade. Do not attempt to slide the blade into the end of the blade cover - snap it apart along the built in hinge. Sort of a 30 inch long clamshell.

3.0 out of 5 stars Designed for light-duty applications. May require calibration., March 16, 2014
Note that this scale is apparently only for light-duty applications. It has an "Electro-Mechanical Design" per the data sheet on the manufacturer's website and may require calibration.
The manuals for the more expensive low-resolution Brecknell models do not discuss calibration.
However the manuals for the high-resolution full-blown shipping scales do discuss calibration.
According to the manual for this model on the manufacturer's website:
"Periodically your scale may require calibration to ensure proper weighing. Calibration may be required if the scale has been improperly used by mishandling or dropping the scale. You will need an accurate 50 or 200 pound weight to calibrate the scale. If calibration is performed with a weight other than 50 or 200 pounds, it will cause your scale to weigh inaccurately."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice scale. Note that coiled cord will not uncoil., March 16, 2014
Very nice scale. Having the display separate from the scale is much more helpful than I expected.
Two notes -
. You can set it so that it doesn't power down two minutes after you turn it on.
. Be warned that the coiled cord is short (28"), very stiff, and will not uncoil unless you stretch it with such force that the mounting bracket tends to come off the wall or the control box is nearly ripped out of the mounting bracket. If the cord is extended, the two ends of the cord may be severely bent where they enter the scale and the control box, probably leading to early failure.
Just don't stretch the cord and you should be fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent stabilizer - but I found the bucket hook to be problematic, March 3, 2014
The stabilizer is great. I particularly like the small aluminum blocks that prevent the ends of the stabilizer tubing from cutting through the feet over time.

You need to look closely at the drawings on the instruction sheet to make sure you are clamping the stabilizer to the ladder in the correct way.

However, I found the bucket hook to be problematic.

To install the bucket hook, you have to tediously force the hook around several inches of bulged tubing in the curved part of the stabilizer.

Once you get it threaded on between the curve and the ladder, the hook slides around, gets in the way when handling the ladder, and rattles when not in use. I forced a bit of shingle between the hook and the stabilizer bar to keep the hook in place and stop it from rattling.

I eventually removed the hook and just use my own hooks when necessary.

Again, the stabilizer itself is great.
