Great GPS, but extras are not worth it
, December 3, 2009
I am writing this review based one on the extras that come with the 265WT. You can read the many other reviews for how good the interface, large screen, colors, and ease of use are.
The technology is just not there yet. If you are just listening to someone talk, like a conference call, it is fine. Multiple people complained to me that I seemed too far away and it was hard to hear me when i used it to talk. I drive a 4 door Camry and the device was probably one and a half feet away from me on my dash.
The window mount that comes with this device does not withstand the high temperatures that your care gets in the summer. In the summer, the device started to fall off and left pieces of plastic on my window and did not ever stick again. I would recommend getting one of the bean bag type mounts that sit on your dash. They work great.
Free Lifetime traffic
I travel a lot in the Washington DC area and on trips throughout the region and the traffic updates are useless. I cannot tell you how many times I was sitting on 395 south, stuck in horrible traffic and the unit showed green (no traffic) or just yellow. Also, many times it would show red (bad traffic) and I would ignore it and drive right through the area without any issue. I think the free FM service that it uses just gathers information that is outdated. Again, if you really are looking at this unit for traffic, look elsewhere.
Also, the power cord that connects the GPS to your car contains the traffic hook up. After about 6 months, the power cord stopped working. I went to best buy and they only carry the normal power charge, without traffic. I looked on Amazon and this traffic cord is very expensive (as of 12/3). I might have called Garmin to see if they could seen me one for free, but, like I said above, the traffic updates are no good, so why bother.
Note that in all, I love my Garmin. I just bought a 255W for my wife for her Birthday (have not got it yet). This unit looks to have all the features of the 265WT but without bluetooth and traffic. Which based on my review, is perfect, and you save some cash. I love the interface of the Garmin, the POIs, and it reliability. I recommend their products highly, just do not count on extras included in the 265WT.
