This is a very erudite study on life, political, artistical and cultural changes before WWI in Western Europe, mostly. It's centered on events and trends in France, Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Britain, Russia and the USA. It has an enormous richness of material, fortunately not plagued by infinite footnotes (although plenty of references at the end). The reader may need to have a fair background from psychiatry to art to appreciate the width of this work. It's not like Massey's or Shirer's writings and sometimes the going is hard. The device of making each year from 1900 to 1914 a chapter is original, but the chronology is not followed strictly. Indeed, it would not be possible to do, given the range of subjects. A lot of cultural ground is covered and the reader must be prepared for that.
