5.0 out of 5 stars It is the best book ever written on artificial lighting, June 28, 2015
It is the best book ever written on artificial lighting. This is my second review about this book. The previous one, i made 9 years ago. So i will keep it short. If you are serious about artificial lighting, this is the first and may be the only book you should buy. It will be the best 40 bucks you will ever spent on your career as a serious photographer. All universities should use this book as the main text book for their courses on lighting. No other book teach me more than this book. Still the best piece of information out there. Beware though, the information is complex and needs dedication and practice to learn it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for PC or dedicated sources, not recommended for mobile, October 16, 2013
First of all i had to say that i like to listen to music very loud. I tried many headphones till this date. I mainly listen to music through my computer by headphone. Within this power and HZ range all headphones I tried have a distortion problem at the high bass and treble region, seems like you are trying to over speed by a 1.6 motor engine. This one has not, even at full speed i have got no distortion at bass and treble. This baby has enough horse power for loud listening from a PC. However it is not good for mobile devices. It needs an amplifier for small music sources such as iPhone and iPad or any other mobile device. Don't buy this for mobile. Buy it for stable music sources like PC or your stereo set. It is an all round balanced headphone, giving a satisfying range for bass and treble. I tried many headphones within 200-500 USD range at the store. This one has got the right power and balance for this price range. I recommend these phones to anyone who like to listen to music from their computers. It needs a dedicated sound card to excel. On board devices will not work.

3.0 out of 5 stars a classic read yet questionable, January 14, 2009
Yes it is a classic read, yes it will change how you look at the daily life and try to understand yourself and others. If you are new to this feeling of realizing the world around you. The book basically examines the dilemma between you and others. In other words how to give others and if it is feasible or not. The book is entitled as the bible for neo Darwinian thought, yet it seems to me how much it adds to the Darwinian source of thought is highly exegerated. As for all the books I have read on the psyche of man, the deep analysis for the human intelligence is lacking. The book also has an ethocentricism, prasing the scientific approach too much. And it also favours the individualism of the 20th century, which is the source of all the evils of our daily life. It gives away fragments of justification for the over powered self of the capitalist mode of production. We are not all survival machines only and we will not make sacrifices just for to pass our genes to future decades. This book heavily focuses on the materialist approach of living a life. But it will not explain all aspects of human beings. It can not explain literature, poetry or art or other manly feelings. And the choice between a materialist approach of life and more feeling full life is still a personal choice. (thanks a millions). Humans are not only calculators. This book however is worth reading. But it will be risky to take this book as a bible or "THE BOOK" about human psyche. As for the discussion goes, this book will provide you new insights for the daily routine of life. But as for the literature goes, Darwin, Freud and Ernest Becker is still better.I must add that after reading the 30th edition, and the comments of the author about rival theories, I found the author little selfish and away from open thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars so you decided to learn the truth about colors..., July 24, 2006
Itten, himself is one of the greatest color theorist of our century, and the masterful mind behind the Bauhaus School.

In this book Itten describes his color theory and the facts of his famous "Color Star", which is one of the most strongest tools for color harmony for designers and alike.

Most color books have samples of color harmonies you choose from when you design, or talk about complementary colors, but cant tell you why u use such combinations or so.

If you have an analytical approach to design, rather than just copying what others do, you will love this book. You will begin to understand the language of colors.

Have u ever heard of "the Seven Color Contrast", if not then it is time for you to get familiar about it.

This book is an evaluation of Ittens masterpiece "Art of Color". The chapter on subjective experience of color is very limited in this book.

If you are willing to invest more on color matters buy "Art of Color"

If you are happy to stay with the basics then this book is adequate for your purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars simply the best book on artificial lighting, July 17, 2006
This is the best book ever written on the subject. It explains the physics of light and types of reflection, which is what the camera records.

Lighting strategies and appropriate lighting technics are given for different subjects like flat surfaces, metal, glass, portrait, volumes (cube, cylinder, etc.) white on white subjects, black on black subjects.

You better read this book before starting to invest into a studio or taking a studio shoot with artificial light for the first time. It clearly pays back.

This is not a "how to" or "cookbook" however. If you are offended with physics and mathematics, this book is not for you.

But if you are patient and eager enough to understand the book you will never need a how to or cook book anyway.

I must agree to the reviews below that diffuse reflections requires a larger section for the next time. Also the book must be in color for the 3. edition.

If you are serious about lighting this must be the main reference book in your library.

After reading this book you will realize that you begin to master lighting!

5.0 out of 5 stars the true gateway to perception, March 3, 2005
If you want to learn why the things are seen in the way they are seen or want to control the look of your objects to build up as a concrete whole, wheter in a motion picture, a paint, a photograph, architecture, sculpture, a graphical design piece, or more strictly speaking, if you ever asked yourself what is a line, what makes a triangle more interesting than a square, why my piece of design looks unstable, and start to think that you are going mad :) this is the decisive beginning for understanding visual communication... Must be bought together with "The Power of the Center" for a complete look... Basics of geometry, psychology, philosophy and history of art are required...

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for every serious designer, April 12, 2004
---"The best designers sometimes disregard the principles of design. When they do so, however, there is usually some compensating merit attained at the cost of the violation. Unless you are certain of doing as well, it is best to abide by the principles" from the Introduction.--- Really a cross reference whether you are designing for screen, print or industry, to tune and power up your designs. Simple 100 design principles laid and explained clearly by example. You will be amazed how instantly it works out. But if you are looking for an inspiration look for other items like "Big Book of Design Ideas"
