5.0 out of 5 stars Finally the GREATEST, Weissmuller & O'Sullivan on DVD!!!, June 23, 2004
Thank you Warner Brothers Entertainment Inc and Turner Entertainment Co. for bringing us ALL 6 of Johnny Weissmullers & Maureen O'Sullivan Tarzan and Jane movies to this OUTSTANDING 4 DVD set "THE TARZAN COLLECTION".
Johnny Weissmuller is still the greatest Tarzan ever to dorn a loin cloth and Maureen O'Sullivan was indeed the best Jane. Even Edgar Rice Burroughs the author of Tarzan personally endorsed Weissmuller and O'Sullivan as his fictionalized charactors heroes from his books.
This DVD set "THE TARZAN COLLECTION" gives 4 DVDs, 6 movies covering an astonishing 10 years 1932 - 1942 and numerous extras featurettes, documentaries and All the original theatrical trailers. Over 525 minutes of action packed adventure sagas of monumental proportions. This is the real deal!!!! All the movies are digitally restored picture & sound in Black/White presented in Standard Format preserving the 4:3 aspect ratio of their orifinal theatrical exhibitions.
This is a must have DVD set for your movie library. Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan are what Hollywood movies want us to believe the way life should be. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The movie that introduced Bogart to Bacall & us now on DVD!, May 4, 2004
Warner BrothersEnterainment does an outstanding job an converting this classic to DVD.
This was one of Hollywoods immortal romantic couples along with Gable and Lombard and Tracy and Hepburn. One difference Bogart and Bacall's passion was forever captured on the silver screen. We would always see those first torrid moments of acting become real life love story.
Lauren Bacall was nineteen year old upcoming star who was mentored by Hawks, with a Vernoica Lake hair sytle, alluring eyes and the deepest sexiest voice. You could feel Humphrey Bogarts emotions and admiration for this new sultry siren star. Quickly they became involved and later married and did 5 more films together.
"To Have and Have Not" was the perfect launch vehicle for the Bogart - Bacall Phenomenon. Loosely based on Ernest Hemingways novel of the same name, Bogart is an American fishing boat captain in Martinique a French owned island during WWII. A similar story line to Casablanca except he gets the girl.
This is a classic movie and a must have for the DVD Bogart library.
Special Features include; Featurette "A love Story", The Story of "To Have And Have Not", vintage bogart & Bacall cartoon, a 1946 Lux Radio Theater Production starring Bogart and Bacall and Theatrical Trailer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authenic replicant aircraft top this 16:9 grand comedy DVD!!, May 4, 2004
1965 was the year of the big screen action race comedies with lots of stars, grand costumes, lavish sets and authentic classic vehicles. "The Great Race" a 1910 auto race from New York to Paris and the "Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines" a 1910 International Aircraft race from London to Paris.
What makes this 1965 Action Comedy so Grand is the attention to detail by Director Ken Annakin who had 6 replica flying machines built by real aero - engineers from the original blue prints and specifications. The accuracy of these replicants even proved the critical pilot weight limitations. They had to even substitute a female stunt pilot to fly the French mono - wing because the original pilot was a very small man. Now available for the first time on a spectacular panoramic 2.20:1 Aspect ratio. (Anamorphic WideScreen DVD (automatically adjusts picture to viewing tv size) with Dolby Surround Sound.) NOTE: THIS IS A FANTASTIC MOVIE TO WATCH ON WIDESCREEN 16:9 HDTV!!!!!
This film is 138 minutes and has many extras which include very detailed information and the history regarding all the 1910 vintage aircraft used in the film.
With an All-star 1960's International cast; Stuart Whitman, Sarah Miles, James Fox, Robert Morley, Red Skelton, Gert Frobe, Jean-Pierre Cassal, Benny Hill, Alberto Sordi and Terry Thomas.
This is a magnificent movie and the ingenuity and comedy of 1910 flight is a delight to watch on the BIG SCREEN. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood's torrid love tale of Gable & Lombard now on DVD!, April 26, 2004
This review is from: Gable and Lombard (DVD)
This 70's movie was lost and now has returned to Anamorphic (automatically adjusts to TV size)WideScreen 16:9 DVD!!! There are no extra features with this DVD.
The Golden Years of Hollywood (1930 - 1960) had the great love stories on and off the silver screen. There was Tracy and Hepburn, Bogart and Bacall and Burton and Taylor but none of these were as hot, steamy and as controversal as "Gable and Lombard". Hollywood through their eyes tries to capture this passion with a comedy/drama of the wildest exaggerations. Even so the love story cannot be denied.
It was the 1930's and Clark Gable was known as the "King" and Carole Lombard was the highest paid actress and known as the "Queen" of the screwball comedy (or the black comedy - a bizarre style of comedy that evolved from the Depression. Taking a negative situation and making it into an ironic humorous story). James Brolin as Gable and Jill Clayburgh as Lombard do an exceptional job bringing these two dynamic superstars to the big WideScreen. Lombard was a real blonde beauty, talented, single, very defensive, could not make romantic/marraige commitments, a tomboy, drank, smoked cigars and a party animal. Gable was handsome, talented, mans man, had married older domineering women and a wild partying womanizer.
This movie although very fictionalized captures the essence of "THE GREATEST HOLLYWOOD ROMANCE". Gable and Lombard fell hard for each other and Gables wife would not grant him a divorce. (She loved the prestige of being Mrs. Clark Gable). This movie has us journey the long road that Gable & Lombard spent trying to make that utilmate commitment, marriage. Finally through public (who loved these two), Hollywood moguls and legal pressure Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were married. This true Hollywood romance only lasted for less than 3 years when Lombard was tragically killed in an airplane crash returning from a World War II bond drive in her home state of Indiana. Gable never got over her death.
This is a must see movie. Watch this fun loving torrid romance a true Hollywood fairy tale. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever DVD Packaging-3 WideScreen Movies, 1- 8 Song CD!!, April 16, 2004
Universal Studios has released for the first time on DVD "The Rock Hudson and Doris Day Romance Collection" a series of their most memorable romance comedies of the 1950's & 60's. This Collection is a cleverly assemblage of 3 movies in Anamorphic WideScreen (picture automatically adjusts to the viewers screen size including 16:9 HDTV Home theatre but not enhanced) with Dolby 2.0 mono sound. The only extra fearures are trailer and some Production notes.
Summary: "Pillow Talk (1959)" - Was Hudson (his first comedy role) & Days (she is awesome) first and best movie together. Day's performance got her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy - lost. This delightful romantic comedy that started it all uniting Hudson & Day 2 of the screens most popular and enduring stars. They are 2 single professionals who find themselves sharing a partyline (telephone situation of the 50's) and a whole lot more in this delightful comedy. The funny & witty Tony Randall co-stars in all 3 of these movies. This movie is their best and alone is worth the price of addmission. "Lover Come Back (1961)" - Is their 2nd film and just okay in my opinion. They play are couple of rivalry advertising executives who are both after the same account and eventually each other in this outrageous romantic comedy. "Send Me No Flowers (1964)" - Almost a stupid kind of movie has hypochondriac husband (Hudson) and his wife (Day) happily healthful married and he is suddenly in critical condition following a mistaken diagnosis in this heartwarming comedy of errors. ALSO INCLUDED "The Doris Say Romance Music Collection CD" an eight song mini sampler of her greatest hits to include; Secret Love (from her 1950 musical "Calamity Jane"), Lover Come Back, High Hopes, Send Me No Flowers, Pillow Talk, Pretty Baby, Makin' Whoppie and What Ever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera (from Hitchcocks 'THe Man Who Knew To Much Best Song Oscar Winner)). This was a great Bonus !!!.
Universals clever packaging provides us with a nice sample of the great romantic comedy team Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Plus the the triple threat talents of Doris Day especially her singing CD. This is fun stuff but renting first to sample it's staying power. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experience the "BIG TOP " life in TECHNICOLOR now on DVD!, April 6, 2004
This review is from: The Greatest Show on Earth (DVD)
For the first time on DVD Paramount Pictures brings us Cecil B. DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth". 1952's biggest box office hit and Oscar Winner for BEST PICTURE. This film has been digitally restored (picture & sound) and presented in beautiful TECHNICOLOR in Standard Format (before WideScreen). There are no Extra Features with this DVD. The picture alone is worth the price of addmission!!!!!!!
Why so popular picture in 1952? Director DeMille captured America's heart by a very behind the scenes, up-close life of the circus in eye popping TECHNICOLOR!!!! Every child dreamed of running away to join the circus. Families couldn't wait for their annual visit to the Big Top. The 1950's was about family, fun and entertainment.
Ringling Brothers - Barnum & Baily Circus was known as "The Greatest Show on Earth" so they joined Hollywood, DeMille and an ALL-STAR cast; Charlton Heston (first major starring role), Betty Hutton (trained for months to due many of her own aerial stunts), Jimmy Stewart (as Buttons the Clown), Cornel Wilde, Dorthy Lamour (from the Hope & Crosby Road Pictures) and Gloria Grahame to give us a taste of the circus magic. Filmed in gorgeous TECHNICOLOR this film is pure eye candy fun. Demille shows us all these colorful characters and the massive circus army that supports them. How hundreds of circus personell and their exotic animals live the circus life. Saw dust in their veins they entertain us twice a day rain or shine. This is fun stuff.
Never mind the story and the Hollywood corniness. Enjoy this brief colorful journey into the world of the canvas tent circus. A must have movie for your family DVD library. Revisit the era of the circus under the "BIG TOP". Let the kids see & experience the days gone by and relive the fun of "THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH". Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars DVD set 2 stars lousey xfer - VHS set 4 stars good copy!!!, April 5, 2004
This review is from: The Phantom Empire, Vol. 1 (DVD)
This review is strickly comparing this newly released 2 DVD set from ALPHA VIDEO to the 2 VHS set from VCI Home Video.
First "The Phantom Empire" (1935) starring Gene Autry the singing cowboy was the first Western/Sci-fi Saturday matinee action serial. A very elaborate and fun story of an underground hidden empire of "Murania" lying 12000 feet below Gene Autry's ranch. This is some fun stuff. 12 cliffhanging chapters originally produced by Mascot Pictures. This preceded the later serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The Phantom Empire runs for 216 minutes total is Black and White and is presented in Standard Format.
Alpha Video 2 DVD set - This is a non-restored direct transfer DVD. The results are horrible, grainy, dark and some times blurry picture. The sound is erractic and sometimes difficult to understand the dialog. The worst thing is the chapters are incomplete. Each serial ending or beginning are chopped resulting in the absense of the cliffhanger thrill of the story. If you must see this classic on DVD, Rent only!!!!!
VCI 2 VHS set - This is "The Phantom Empire" as it was ment to be seen. It is only VHS quality but so much better than the DVD set. The sound is much better and ALL 12 CHAPTERS are complete and the cliffhanging thrill is there to drive you on to next chapter. This is a fun experience and maybe a purchase but definitely a rental!!!!
This 1935 serial is a one of a kind and if you are a Gene Autry fan this could be for you. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not since Dances w/wolves has Costner film looked this good!, March 19, 2004
This review is from: Open Range (DVD)
This Movie review is predominantly about this 2-Disc DVD Collection Edition with a few editorial (personal observations) comments.
Kevin Costner's passion is truly in the American Western. He has proved it with one of the greatest Western films "Dances With Wolves" (Top 100 AFI (American Film Institute) American film of last 100 years (circa 1998).
Now with "OPEN RANGE" Kevin Costner has again returned to his great film making with another soon to be Western Classic. I loved this movie!!!! A great story, fantastic breath taking panoramic cinematography (Alberta, Canada), an outstanding supporting cast with Robert Duvall as "Boss", Annette Bening as "Sue", Michael Jetter as "Percy" and Costner as "Charlie", with plenty of drama, action and true romance. (My wife loved it too!!)
Summary of this DVD set; Disc-1 - Open Range Feature film in 2.35:1 Ratio Widescreen Anamorphic (automatically adjusts to any television size) Format. And Enhanced for 16:9 Home Theatre HDTV's. (what a magnificent Picture & dynamic DTS 5.1 Digital Surround Sound). Audio Commentary w/Kevin Costner (very informative). Disc-2 - Special Features; "America's Open Range" a 60 min historical journey back in time to the open range of the 1800's narrated by Kevin Costner (very enlightening/informative), "Beyond the Range" Directors Journal about the making of Open Range, 10 Deleted Scenes w/optional Kevin Costner commentary, StoryBoarding: Open Range and Music Video Montage.
This is a must see Classic Western especially the 20 minute climatic gun fight (better than the gun fight at the OK Corral). Rent it, Buy it, I guarrantee you'll be watching this movie again and again. The Direction, Cinematography the Storyline the Cast are the best!!! To bad the general public missed this movie the first time around. Here's your chance to watch/own this Classic Western DVD set !!! Don't miss it. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars MA & PA VOL I - 4 funny films - now on a remastered DVD!, February 24, 2004
In 1946 Author Betty MacDonald wrote a Best Seller "The Egg and I". In 1947 Universal Pictures made it into one of the most popular movies starring Claudette Colbert & Fred MacMurrary as newly wed city folk gone chicken farmers. And Majorie Main & Percy Kilbride as "Ma & Pa Kettle" the madcap country neighbors with 15 kids. The Egg and I and the Kettles were so popular that Universal Pictures made a sequel starring the Kettles in "The Further Adventures of Ma and Pa Kettle" in 1949. Again so successful the Kettles became a series of hilarious films. Main & Kilbride were the perfect blend for Beverly HillBillies comedy.
Summary: All 4 films are Standard Format and Black/White remastered picture & sound (excellent quality). "The Egg & I (1947) Has newly weds Bob & Betty MacDonald (Colbert & MacMurray) giving up the city life for the life of a chicken farmer "EGGS" in the state of Washington. Their 40 acre run down farm becomes a real challenge along with their scatter brain / madcap neighbors the destitute Kettles (w/ 15 kids). A great story, outstanding ensemble cast and hilarious antics fill this movie. "The Further Adventures of Ma and Pa Kettle" (1949) The procrastinating Pa Kettle obsession to enter contests proves to be a winner. The fun begins when the Kettle prize is a brand new house of the future. "Ma and Pa Kettle Go To Town" (1949) Pa wins another contest a trip to New York. Who will baby sit their 15 helluns so they can go? "Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm" (1950) Ma & Pa are to become grand parents and the rich society in-laws are coming to stay with the Kettles to visit their grandson.
This is Volume One and it loaded with pure fun and laughter. If you want to see 1940's & 1950's comedy at its best jump on board the Kettle DVD Series!!! Enjoy
