1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful. Completely unbelievable plot., March 15, 2015

Dreadful. The plot is completely unbelievable. Other reviewers compared this book to Atonement and Gone Girl. Those were terrific well written books. Gone Girl was very dark, but well developed and ultimately believable. Wreckage is nothing like it. Spoiler alert...the main character falls in love with the man she is shipwrecked with. They have a baby together while on a deserted island. When they return to their families she donates an egg and anonymously he uses it to impregnate his wife. When the wife discovers she has given birth to her husband's ex-lovers baby SHE IS THRILLED! What a load of unbelievable horse s***.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing with a plot that pushes fantasy a bit too far., February 3, 2015

Some reviewers criticized this book for being a mythic tale. I enjoyed the mythic qualities of the book to a point. It requires some suspension of belief and willingness to go along for the ride to enjoy this book. I was able to suspend belief for the first half of the book, but when the son starts conjuring prehistoric saber tooth tigers into existence in his basement I could no longer go along for the ride. Beautiful lyrical writing that pushes the boundaries of belief a little too far.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bonnie Dodge is NO Barbara Kingsolver, February 3, 2015

This review is from: Waiting (Kindle Edition)
I received a pop-up recommendation for this book touting that "if you like Barbara Kingsolver you will like Bonnie Dodge". Barbara Kingsolver's characters are richly developed, her plots are intriguing. Bonnie Dodge writes a story that reads like a Lifetime Channel movie. Maybe that is your cup of tea. It is not mine and it bears NO comparison to the brilliant writing of Barbara Kingsolver,

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprising and rewarding read, October 15, 2014

This book surprised me. I have had it on my Kindle for a long time and kept postponing reading it for titles that were more appealing. I am sorry that I put it off. Thie book is beautifully written. The story line is quite odd, yet believable and captivating. The book is titled "Canada" but there are a few hundred pages before the country comes into play. It is the story of a boy growing up in incredibly unusual circumstances. Canada plays a big role in his journey. How much of a life is shaped by the choices we make? How much is circumstance? These are the themes explored that the main character, Dell, explores.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but far from captivating., September 7, 2014
Think "The Road" for young adult readers. Not quite post-apocalyptic setting (post nuclear meltdown) has the teenaged protagonist trying to find her way after the death of her parents. She is supposed to be a very bright girl, but she makes some very stupid choices. Well she is a teenager after all. It was an enjoyable, but far from moving or captivating read.

2.0 out of 5 stars short novel is an odd format and I did not care for it, June 4, 2014

If you are a fan of short stories, you might like this. The writing is very good...lyrical, poetic even. I have never been a fan of short stories. I want more plot than they typically offer. Paul Yoon is a short story writer who wanted to expand to a short novel. The transition did not work for me. Although the writing is lovely the story lacks sufficient action and interest for my tastes.

2.0 out of 5 stars extremely thin plot line with an extremely unsatisfying ending, May 27, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There is well written prose and interesting characters, but not enough of a story. The ending was particularly disappointing. I do not require a happy ending with all the loose ends tied up, but this ....I kept flipping pages back and forth thinking "I must be missing something". But no, it is the book that is missing something.

It is not an epic tale. It is not great literature. It is a heartwarming true story about a terrific dog and his influence on a community, a police department and particularly on the author.
