I'll admit I was slightly skeptical when I read the plot synopsis, of a hit man who arrives in LA after a massive quake and is suddenly running for his life after witnessing a killing. On top of that it has one of the worst covers for a book I've ever seen. However, all of that was quickly dispelled as soon as it got me into its grip. And boy does it ever. Smith, a successful screenwriter has created a nuanced plot, with complex characters who would easily translate to the big screen, which is where this should head next. Fans of Crais and Connelly would find themselves right at home between these pages, and it'll be interesting to see what Frank thinks up next.

It's hard to believe Flournoy is a first time novelist as she writes with the assuredness of someone who has a whole canon of books already in print. Set in Detroit in the late eighties, the Turners are a family of thirteen grown children and their ailing matriarch Violet who has now left her home to live with her eldest child. The story paints a broad swath with the majority of the kids focusing instead on the oldest, Cha Cha and youngest, Lelah, living in a city beyond depressed while dealing with their own personal demons. Flournoy has a gift for the gab and her family members feel fully fleshed out and real, and while the story is by no means revalatory, it is a solid depiction of an American family.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Weird, and Also Strangely Touching, January 15, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
So hard to pigeon hole this book with a simple synopsis. Strange, slightly disturbing, dreamlike and yet grounded in real pathos, Kangs book follows three different narratives breaking off of an initial story of Yeong-hye, a young woman living with her husband who suddenly announces she vegetarian, and begins a descent into madness. At some points it reads like a literary David Lynch film and yet also has moments of heartfelt raw emotion.

It's always great to start a new year with a fantastic book. Nominated for the prestigious Prix Goncourt in France, this sexy, page turner follows two friends Samuel and Samir who are in love with the same woman, Nina. When Nina chooses Samuel, Samir moves from Paris and relocates to New York where he becomes a highly successful lawyer. But the story only begins there as we see what the next twenty years has in store for this threesome, and how time and circumstance shapes their futures both together and as individuals. So smart, darkly funny, and so utterly compelling, it's a timely read for what's currently happening throughout the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Stunning Book, December 31, 2015

Atkinson views this book not as a sequel to her highly praised 'Life After Life' but instead a companion piece, and indeed it truly is seeing as it centers on Teddy, the brother to protagonist Ursula from the former novel. In a beautifully shifting narrative, older Teddy reflects back on his life a bomber in the RAF during World War II. Paired with this is his transition to civilian life after the war that includes a wife and a self absorbed daughter whose own children play such an important role to their grandfather. Atkinson has written another sweeping historical novel that feels both vast and intimate at the same time. A simply marvelous writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Loved Spending Time With These Dysfunctional Siblings, December 13, 2015

Sometimes a book comes along and it's exactly what you need to be reading. This was one of those books for me. The Plumb siblings are plagued by various financial mishaps that will hopeful all be rectified when from the youngest sibling,Bea, turns forty and their joint trust fund becomes available to them all. However when an accident happens with oldest son Leo,the 'nest' is left decimated, it being used to cover medical and attorney fees of the young female passenger he maimed in the accident. How the children grapple with their new reality is the meat of the story, and where it finds all its heart, wisdom, and redemption. A simple but terrific book from a talented new writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple Beauty., November 27, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This slip of a novel told with extreme grace and restraint, is a quiet story that meditates on topics such as money, happiness, children and parents, and the way we allow ourselves to be treated and treat others. Told through the eyes of Lucy Barton, a woman reflecting on her past growing up in poverty in Amgash Illinois to her current life as a successful author, Strout once again like in 'Olive Kitteride' proves she's the master of observation in both the ordinary and extraordinary alike.

Long, it meanders from past to present and back again and expects your utmost attention all the while feeling vaguely misogynistic with a cast of mostly unappealing characters, especially his women. And yet. I liked it. Sure I struggled at times and felt at the mercy of Franzen's pinballing ideas from internet privacy, to parenting, and rogue journalism to name a few. Purity, or Pip, as she's known, follows a near modern Dickensian search for the father she never knew. But her story is only the launching pad for a series of stories linking her to a host of supporting players who all have rich and varied stories of their own. Some were more engaging than others but as complex and wordy as the narrative can be at times, Franzen threads it mostly together by the end in a simple understated finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Let The Math Deter You, November 12, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
When I started this I didn't think a book about a math genius and his son would keep my attention, but it was thoroughly engaging. The first third of the book really focuses on Milo Andrets genius, while the remainder shifts focus and narrative style to his son Hans, who is now married with children of his own, moving the story into a layered and touching portrait of the complicated relationship between fathers and sons. Being mathematically challenged I marveled at Canin's command of a subject that is equivalent of Greek to me, and his ability to make it accessible and compulsively readable.
