5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely violent, yet extremely well done..., April 30, 2005
In some ways, it's too bad this movie is so damn violent. I say that because it's so well written, and the dialogue, in particular, is so good, that I found this movie got better the more times I watched it. It's just the violence that makes it hard to see repeatedly, for me anyway. I really hated this movie when I first saw it, but repeated viewings have changed my mind. If you can stomach extreme violence, definitely see this film. And, if you hate it at first, see it a couple more times. There is some great filmmaking here, though depending on your tastes, you might not see it at first.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BE A PINHEAD-BUY THIS NOW!!!, April 30, 2005
This review is from: Rock 'N' Roll High School (DVD)
Damn, the Ramones were/are great. This movie is worth it for them alone. But somehow the rest of the movie works too, in a cornball, B-movie, 1979 sort of way (I say this in a very positive way too). It's both a time capsule and a fun look at what high school would be like in an alternate universe, if there was any good music around anyway. I'd love to see a high school movie that has Type O Negative all over the soundtrack. Of course it would probably end with all the main characters killing themselves, so maybe that wouldn't work... Anyway, this movie rocks-stay away from the sequel though!

5.0 out of 5 stars BUT ONLY AFTER THE FIRST VIEWING-, April 30, 2005
After that, I only give it 3 stars, as the impact of knowing the plot lessened my appreciation for the movie. Yeah, a lot of the dialogue is still ridiculous (in a good way) and funny, but I found 'Reservoir Dogs' to hold up better after repeated viewings. The dialogue is better, and knowing how the plot is going to break down doesn't subtract from the power of the film. Ironically, I hated 'Reservior Dogs' when I first saw it. I had people tell me to see it again, and see if my opinion changed. It did, although the violence isn't easy to take. However, if you haven't seen 'Pulp Fiction' yet, check it out-it really is one wild ride.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the first one..., April 28, 2005

Lightning only struck once for 'Fletch'. Nothing could top the original anyway. True 'Fletch' fans already know this--

3.0 out of 5 stars No big deal..., April 27, 2005
This review is from: Signs (DVD)
Finally saw this the other day and... it was okay, but it reminded me a bit of 'Secret Window' in that it had a decent, albeit slow, spooky build up that just fizzled out. Mel Gibson phones in another performance, and Home Alone's brother is the better actor in the family, but Joaquin Phoenix, though a bit wooden at times, was good. Overall, I too liked the glasses of water slant, but one thing that I can't get past is this: How could aliens find their way to earth, make these incredible crop circles, be invisible during the day, and yet not have a plan to deal with a substance that makes up over 70% of the earth??? Maybe it WAS just a coincidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars This movie is the reason why 70s sh#$ is everywhere now-, April 27, 2005
Back in October 1993, I saw this movie in the theater (I still have the ticket stub too). It was great then and it's still great now. Back in Oct. '93, the late 80s were still being wrung out of American culture, and there was only grunge, and it was about to disappear. Then, this movie came out. Though it wasn't huge at the box office, it got to video quickly, and as word of mouth spread, so did this movie-along with its clothes, music, etc.-and the 70s were back, sort of. Flared pants returned, tight pants returned, long, straight hair came back, copycat movies and/or retro-type movies started appearing more, 'That 70s Show' went on the air, the original KISS got back together, etc., mostly due to the impact of this movie. But, aside from all that, this is a funny, insightful film that has A LOT of one liners, and is worth owning, when the right version of the DVD is finally available...

2.0 out of 5 stars Another overrated Clint movie..., April 25, 2005
This review is from: The Outlaw Josey Wales (DVD)
This is another Clint movie that is too slow, too long, and isn't nearly as deep as many people have come to believe. Clint's strength isn't direction, contrary to certain opinions. This story could have been told in less than 2 hours, but it dragged on way too long. Chief Dan George is the sole redeeming factor for TOJW. HIS performance makes this movie worth watching now and again, but as a whole, this movie is only worth 1 viewing. By the way, Philip Kaufman(sp?) started out directing this movie, until Clint decided he wasn't cutting it, and literally took control. From that moment forward, Hollywood adopted 'The Eastwood Director Rule', specifically: "That no member of the set or crew may replace a director once that director has already been put in place". Kaufman never regained his footing in Hollywood again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not 'Sleuth', but damn good nonetheless, April 24, 2005
This review is from: Deathtrap (DVD)
10 years after 'Sleuth', Michael Caine did 'Deathtrap'. He now plays the role of the older, wiser man while Christopher Reeve takes on that of the young upstart. The plots differ somewhat and 'Sleuth' has a better script, but this movie is worthy of 4 and 1/2 to 5 stars though. 'Deathtrap' doesn't challenge the viewer as much as 'Sleuth'. Moreover, after repeated viewings, some of its luster fades. But, it's still funny, smart, filled with memorable lines, and leaves you guessing 'til the end. It blends comedy and drama/thriller quite smoothly and is definitely worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars As wild as any drug trip..., April 24, 2005
This is the only western that I can watch over and over and over and over... Clint should have left westerns behind after this one, because he never even got close again-EVER. He is not now, nor ever was, the caliber of director that Leone was-Clint's forte is screen presence/on screen style. His best movies (as an actor) were those that had someone else direct, and challenged him to dig for something more or at least do something different. This is one of those movies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Clint moralizes on violence???, April 24, 2005
This review is from: Unforgiven (Snap Case) (DVD)
It's good to know that I'm not alone when I say this was slow, boring, and forgettable. There isn't anything here that hasn't been done before, and better-particularly by Clint himself. Over time, I think more people will see this as a lifetime achievement 'thing' for Clint and less as any great cinematic triumph, which it's not. Stick with 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly'. Violent (don't forget Dirty Harry) movies are why Clint even exists in the public's mind. For him to use more violence to preach about violence is too little, too late-and hypocritical too.
