4.0 out of 5 stars Good...but not the original artists, April 15, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a good compilation covering some good 80's tunes, but they are not the original artists.....they are excellent covers that in some cases are almost better than the original versions. For instance...the version of 'Living in a Box' sounds better somehow with the different vocalist, and Domino Dancing is on this collection is better because I don't like the Pet Shop Boys (Neil Tennant)'s voice from the original.....One Night in Bangkok on this collection sounds a bit different because the singer isn't quite as good as Murray Head but otherwise the music is nearly identical. The version of Fame (originally by Irene Cara) doesn't sound a whole lot like the original but I don't care for that song anyway. Aside from a few changes with vocals on a couple of tracks, the differences are mostly negligible and I enjoy this collection a lot; just don't expect the tracks to be completely identical to the originals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really fun music from a bygone era, September 24, 2014
Really fun music from a bygone era...this was a very talented group and it's kind of a shame they didn't have more music released because pretty much all of this is really good or great. I was a baby when this music was coming out but I remember my neighbors having the 45 of 'The Night Chicago Died' and thinking that was a neat song....I think music of the past was so much better and I much prefer music like this that is positive and upbeat. A lot of variety and some fun covers of old songs that they put their own spin on. Really not too much filler/B-side material here at all Very talented band and fun double cd set. You will not regret buying this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Moving, Humorous Novel; Loved It, September 17, 2014
This review is from: The Casual Vacancy (Paperback)
Knowing the brilliant imagination required to write the Harry Potter series, I knew that Rowling would make a great writer of adult novels, and I was not disappointed-quite the opposite. This is a brilliant book which illustrates Rowling's true empathy and understanding of human nature; it illustrates without cliche what makes us all different and what makes us all similar. Some of the rough and disadvantaged characters in the novel are probably as complete polar opposites of Rowling as could be possible in behavior and social status, but she is able to create characters whom you are simultaneously sympathetic with and repelled by. Rowling understands people, all kinds of them; and she is not a snob...that much is clear from the book. I could not put this book down and I truly enjoyed getting to know these characters; they are beautifully well-drawn and the book contains a lot of humor in spots which balances out some of the tragic and negative aspects of the story. Rowling has me now as a devoted fan and I will continue to read her novels...she is now writing a series of mysteries which began with 'The Cuckoo's Calling' and I truly hope she will write more novels akin to 'The Casual Vacancy'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Sophisticated Production with great hooks and lyrics=Great album, April 1, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Liberty (Audio CD)
I don't know what I'm missing here but this is a great cd through and through. It contains a more stripped down sound than earlier works yet sounds very much like Duran Duran at their best. You get the feel when listening to it that when preparing for the album the band just got a bunch of well-written songs containing great hooks and good lyrics and casually did their own thing without trying TOO hard and it all just ended up sounding great. There is scarcely a weak sound on the album; it contains less filler than Big Thing and mirrors a bit of the sound of that album with less heavy production in most cases and definitely lacks the polished sheen that Notorious contained. Overall this is a great album with a great middle of the road, relaxed sound that is very enjoyable. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Near Perfect New Jack Swing CD!, March 29, 2014
This review is from: Riff (Audio CD)
Wow, this is a great cd! Loads of fun, great songs with not a bad track on the disc. If you like the New Jack Swing sound, especially artists like Guy, Troop, Johnny Gill, etc. and are eager to find other great albums that are a good example of this music style, I urge you to try this Riff album. It's great, that's all I've got to say!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Slice of Life Movie, March 26, 2014
This review is from: Home Town Story (DVD)
This is a really cute movie with a good storyline that won't blow your mind but it will hold your interest. It's true that many wouldn't be interested in seeing it if it weren't for Marilyn Monroe being in it but the fact that it's a pleasant movie is a plus accompanied with her presence in the movie (she does a good job and looks great). The movie is just a little over an hour long (about 70 minutes) and is worth watching if you're a Marilyn fan or if you just enjoy these old films with a simple plot and good storyline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Set...Incredible Music, August 10, 2013
Wow!! This is incredible music. Everyone is familiar with Hall and Oates' 80s music, most of which is good; but 70's Hall and Oates just blows me away. These are three amazing albums; all with that indescribably wonderful Philly soulful sound they had from the early to mid 70's or so, that was lost along the way either for commercial purposes or perhaps they just moved on creatively. The fact that you can get these three albums all in one set at a great price is too amazing to pass up. Worth buying for 'Abandoned Luncheonette' alone (which got 5 stars from Allmusic by the way, the highest rating an album can achieve). 'War Babies' is as good or better; and the debut 'Whole Oates' is a great debut. The era of music this great and talent like this is something we'll never see again; I think it's safe to say nothing these days even comes close. Superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Breezy Mystery Novel, August 1, 2013
This review is from: The Medium Is Murder (Hardcover)
This is a really fun little mystery novel that I very much enjoyed. It keeps you guessing til the end, and the dialogue among the characters as well as the telling of the story itself is witty and clever. It isn't overly long and is something you'll likely breeze right through. A good story.
