5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down This year's best so far, March 17, 2013
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat is the story of the friendship between three women, Clarice, Barbara Jean and Odette. Dubbed "the Supremes "by Big Earl the owner of the All You Can Eat, these three friends share the ups and downs of life in the 60's and 70's and beyond. One struggles to keep up appearances despite a messy home life. One struggles with memories of past abuse and true love lost and the third is faced with lie and death. Odette is further struggling with her newfound abilities to commune with the dead, especially with her late mother and her mother's frequent side kick, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. Though the women remain in their hometown their struggles mirror the nation's. Each one is struggling with family needs, community expectations and her own needs and wants.

Edward Kelsey Moore has crafted a delightful first novel, never skimping on characters or reducing them to serotypes. The story is poignant and funny and will draw readers to any other books he decides to write. An outstanding first effort.

Alexander Del Rossa Men's Water Absorbent 15 oz Fleece Bathrobe is a big man's robe. I ordered it for my husband for Christmas, because I was tired of the too small "one size fits all" robes of Christmas past. This is a plush, soft cozy robe that is generous in cut and long. The one star not chosen is simply because the robe is TOO BIG! Sizing needs to be a bit more informative. My husband loves the robe.

When I first opened the package with the
Yo Gabba Gabba Brobee & Plex Long-Sleeve Pajama Set I have to admit I was concerned. They seemed too small. Thank heavens for stretchy material! These pajamas are just the right weight and size for my very active 3 year old grandson. He loved having his favorite Yo Gabba Gabba friends on his pajamas. I liked the fit and the bold graphics. A hit all around.

Little Red Riding Hood is the very first pop song I learned all the words to because of its heavy rotation on the local YMCA’s juke box. Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs sing a witty little ditty with a sly wink and a nod. Woolly Bully is equally as fun. Great beat, great recording quick trip back in time!

From the moment Diane Schurr begins to sing you are captured by her pure tones and obvious delight in song. This track a duet with Jose Feliciano is the quintessential love song. This is my favorite version on this track. You can't go wrong with Diane.

Marriage and Other Acts of Charity: A Memoir

4.0 out of 5 stars Why we love each other and how to keep it that way, March 1, 2013
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Kate Braestrup should know about marriage. Twice married (once widowed) Braestrup has been a chaplain in her professional life and has performed and counseled numerous relationships and marriages over the years. Marriage and Other Acts of Charity: A Memoir is her insight garnered through observation and experience. Written in an easy going, straight forward style this is a book that is a guide to the many ins and outs of marriage. It does not preach, it just informs and in a way, comforts those who choose to marry. But it is easy to get distracted by the characters that populate these pages and what a cast of characters they are. It is almost as if the author is trying to prove how "folksy" she can be. It is an odd cast that populates these pages. Easy to read and very enjoyable. Yet, with her typical; good humor and ready acceptance the author makes another good point, it does take all kinds...and all are entitled to love.

4.0 out of 5 stars A musical time capsule, March 1, 2013

Rick Bass tells a story he says he learned of while pursuing a signed photo of country singer Keith Urban for his teenage daughter. He meets Maxine Brown of the now forgotten The Browns who were once as big and well known as their close and personal friend, Elvis. Starting in Memphis the Browns began their country careers with the almost ethereal harmonies that later drew all the greats to work with them. Along the way there is heartbreak and triumph, promise and betrayal. Despite international acclaim the Brown siblings, Maxine, Bonnie and brother Jim Ed eventually fade away. What was their story?

This book brought to mind Loretta Lynn's Coalminer's Daughter. It reads that authentic. The voices harken back to a simpler time and to simpler dreams. These voices ring true and draw a reader in. There is the longing for success that is ever challenged/balanced for the need for home...the story line of a good country song. I really enjoyed this book and found Mr. Bass's touch just right...no one character too broadly drawn or belittled.

3.0 out of 5 stars A sweet tale for the 1%, March 1, 2013
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Pamela Ferdinand, Beth Jones and Carey Goldberg are busy women and very focused on what they want in life. This is their story of all their wishes.....and making them happen. business, careers, education all the things they wanted could be worked towards, could be achieved. Relationships that proved to be a far more tricky and elusive. And the dreams to one day have children? Well.....

One thing that comes through loud and clear is these three are friends, the kind of friends you want to have, friends for life and that is the engine that drives this story. That friendship sees them through disappointments and trials. That friendship also frames the quest to become mothers. Anyone who has looked tearily at another negative pregnancy test will find this story too familiar...to a point. These are three women who have financial resources and abilities that baffled me as I read. Is this really the way it is? What about the rest (most) of us who just make it day to day without the reach or finances to just order donated sperm if we want? These three women who are so blessed and able have a story, but don't seem to have a lot of insight or warmth towards the subject. The writing is stilted at times and it is hard to stayconnected. Their friendship is the best part of the book, sadly it is not enough.

When my doctor strongly recommended I start taking fish oil tablets I was not enthused. Friends who had done so reported the dreaded "fishy burps" and worse. I also was overwhelmed by the many types of fish oil available and might have remained no except the opportunity to try Jarrow Formulas EPA-DHA Balance. Noticing the caution about anticoagulants, I checked with my other provider and got the "all clear". The gel tabs were easy to swallow and did not have any fishy smell ot taste. I also compared them to other brands and am happy with the combination of oils (most brands do not have this combination )and the prie. Since I am making this a part of my daily health regimen, I will continue to come to Amazon for Jarrow Formulas EPA-DHA Balance. The prie is better and the formula works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreak, destruction and redemption, February 15, 2013
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Lies My Mother Never Told Me is and intriguing memoir written by Kaylie Jones, daughter of World War II novelist James Jones (From Here to Eternity, The Thin Red Line and more). Kaylie grew up in a house of big personalities, her mother Gloria was the quick witted center of any party (and when your guest list included such luminaries as Truman Capote, James Baldwin, Norman Mailer and others, that was saying something). Both parents liked to drink....a lot. And eventually James died when Kaylie was 16. Gloria's drinking continued and escalated. Kaylie was her father had been able to manage the excesses of both parents...but Gloria was left alone and unleashed her disappointments and anger on Kaylie. Kaylie responded in a way many children of alcoholic will recognize...she worked hard, paid any price to keep the peace.
Kaylie Jones has crafted a heartbreaking, yet lyrical, memoir of survival. Instead of painting her mother in broad strokes, she has allowed nuance and humanity into her work. I don't know of many adult children of alcoholic parents who grasp not only the pain but the continual work needed to emerge whole. This book is sometimes so painful that it needs to be put down and let the heart and the mind rest. But the story is so well written and so full of forgiveness and hope that it has to be picked up so you know the story's end.
