Kindle Touch 3G - no more web browsing via 3G?

We apologize for the confusion. Our new Kindle Touch 3G enables you to connect to the Kindle Store, download books and periodicals, and access Wikipedia - all over 3G or Wi-Fi. Experimental web browsing (outside of Wikipedia) on Kindle Touch 3G is only available over Wi-Fi.

Our Kindle Keyboard 3G will continue to offer experimental web browsing over 3G or Wi-Fi.

Can you connect to the amazon cloud over 3g?

Yi Lu says:
I second Omar's question. Will we be able to access files stored on our Amazon Cloud Drive? If yes, 3g might still be a useful investment for reading my documents on the Cloud Drive.

I think I get it: you will not be able to email from Europe from the kindle touch 3g. I have a generation 2 kindle and would like one with the better contrasting lettering. Now the question is do I get the cheaper kindle touch or the $79 kindle basic.

Do I have the 3g usability right?

Anyone with opinions on which kindle to get?

Thanks for the clarification... I already decided to keep my Kindle Keyboard. I love it anyway, no smudges on the screen and the k/b seems quite responsive. So easy to make notes too. To me, Touch would actually not be an improvement other than form factor and/or size. Also thank you Amazon for not taking away browsing capabilities on the machines that currently support that, I really appreciate it!

I guess you can update your blog now, official word is out, Kindleworld :)

Thanks for this; I cancelled the touch 3G and will stick with touch wifi--and, I'll still keep my kindle 3 wifi/3G.

Glad to have a definitive answer to this question.

I pre-ordered the 3G Touch. Now I've got to decide if 3G connectivity for the Kindle store & Wikipedia is worth $50, cancel and get the wi-fi Touch, or cancel and get the 3G Keyboard that has cellular browsing. I like the form factor of the Touch and I've got a feeling that 3G browsing for the Keyboard will eventually be phased out, so I'm leaning toward the wi-fi Touch at the moment.

Thank you for clarifying this. I called KCS twice & they said that it would. It is good to have a final answer, either way. =)

I'm going for wi-fi instead of 3G now. I'm not at all upset though, it makes perfect sense. Touch (and maybe a stronger CPU?) would make the browser more useful and Amazon can't really subsidize that over 3G indefinitely. The reason why it worked on the K3 is because you would really only bother using it in special circumstances (and it was really great at those times, of course).

Plavalaguna says:
Dear Amazon, why are you charging us $50 to shop in your store? I think the $50 was the most misleading factor; NO WONDER nobody could believe that 3G browsing has been eliminated!

Kessa says:
They're not charging you $50 to shop in their store, they are charging you $50 for the convenience of buying books that you want w/o having to be near a wi-fi hotspot or your Router.

Plavalaguna says:
The price of adding 3G on the Keyboard is $50, and the price of adding 3G on the Touch is $50, but what you get for your $50 is not the same.

Correct and I just confirmed with a phone call to Customer Service and an explicit discussion.

Plavalaguna says:
I want Amazon to tell me why the price of 3G on the Touch is $50. With no explanation, I can easily jump to the conclusion that it was to mislead us into thinking we were buying the same 3G as they have on the Keyboard. I don't like to jump to conclusions.

Now i have to cancel my Touch 3G for the wifi only version.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 2, 2011 11:59:09 PM PDT
Thanks, Sophia, I did complete the blog update at 5:29, one minute after your post, after I slapped on a pic of the skinny Touch, did some links so people could come here and see the official statement, and did some bold-facing to make it clearer in my own mind what was said :-)

I had cancelled my $189 KTouch 3G earlier Sunday (decided it was not worth paying THAT much now and so tonight I went for the ad-offers 3G version because I do like that I can download books or check Wikipedia from a book wherever I happen to be. Spoiled, I guess. I figure a couple of special-offers will help me make back the extra $.

On the Kindle Keyboard , what's nice is you can -start- a highlight on a word or phrase in a book but NOT end the hightlight w/ the normal click -- instead press spacebar to end the highlight and it puts the word or phrase into a searchbar and then you can choose at the bottom of the box to go to Wikipedia and look up more info on the subject without having to type anything. That's always been a boon.

I'm guessing that trick won't work on the Touch model though.

For those who got the $79 or $109 Kindle Basic, Nate Hoffelder discovered Sunday that you can press the Keyboard button and the Menu button together (hold them) and get a screenshot (which will wind up in the Kindle's "documents" folder and you can move it to your computer via the USB cable).
