A modest, and simple, Kindle suggestion: Ambient Sounds

I would suggest adding an option on the kindle which plays ambient sounds. I like the mp3 player idea, but to be honest, I will never listen to a song while reading; I find it much too distracting. However, I regularly fire up an ambient sound app and listen to that while reading. This helps to drown out the background noises wherever I am at. I may be riding on the bus, but my ears focus on the sound of rain pattering on a roof, and thus, I am more focused on my book.

I understand I could download these sounds as mp3's and then play them on the Kindle, but this would be a neat feature to add to the device.

The more things they add to the Kindle the more resources it will require. Just use an mp3.

Not to be rude Andrew, but the odds of something like this ever being implemented are approximately 1 in 1,929,399,382. I just did the math.

You may in fact be the only person on Earth who's interested in this. But I do have to give you credit for a completely original topic here on the forums. That doesn't happen too often.

Downloading an mp3 of ambient sounds is probably faster than typing your post.

I'd never thought of this, and I'd probably never use it, but it's a cool idea nonetheless (no matter how unlikely). I agree that your best bet for now would be to use mp3's. Still, a nice idea.

Honestly, when I read the topic I though you meant sounds like a "page turning" sound every time you turn the page of a book you're reading, and a little "jingle" or "swoosh" when you open a book for the first time. :-p

Actually I am of the same mind as the OP. Call me goofy but I like to listen to ambient tracks like thunderstorms, meadows, babbling brooks, etc.. or just classical or jazz music. Music with lyrics tend to distract me unless it's really low.

However, I don't see this being added to the e-ink Kindles.. but if you are using a Fire or an Ipad, etc. there are some nice apps that play ambient tracks and you can run them in the background while reading. I use an app called NatureSpace on IOS, not sure if there is an android version but I bet there is something similar.

Andrew, if you have a Kindle Fire, there are quite a few apps (including free ones) in the Amazon Appstore...search for "ambient".

If it's not a Kindle Fire...well, personally, I prefer this to be something someone chooses to add (by downloading an MP3) rather than something that took up memory on my device automatically. I'm different from you on this: I read better with more activity in the room, usually. I often read with the TV on, or with music with words.

I'm always fine with options, though. :) It may be that there are a lot of people like you who would like this, and Amazon might decide its worth the development effort and system demands. I use text-to-speech often, for example, and many people probably think it isn't worth the resources...

How much extra are you willing to pay for a Kindle with such capability? $10.00? $100.00?

I don't understand how this is different from "listening to ambient sound MP3s"

Just search for "ambient sound" in MP3. 7,209 options. All less than a dollar, some more than an hour long.

That's true, there are a ton of ambient nature tracks you can buy from amazon or apple for a buck. Might be a good solution also.

I highly recommend this app, I have it on my (Android) Xoom tablet, but it is available for the Kindle Fire as well. (By the way, it is not just for sleeping, or using as a clock, I use it during the day to help me stay relaxed.)

Is anyone else amused that people use "Ambient Noise" to drown out ambient noise?

No, he's not the only one. BUT - I have simply downloaded MP3s full of soothing sounds/music - the best, fastest & least resource-hogging way to get them. Of course, I had to pay for them....;-)

Will they ever allow sheet music on the Kindles and maybe a metronome auto page turner?

Sorry, but what does this have to do with ambient sounds?

And when did people ever stick to the topic?
