Issues I am having:
Delete button sometimes doesnt work.. i will hit it, it will delete once.. then if i hit delete again, it will repeat a letter over and over.. zzzz or llll, etc..

Space bar... I hit the space bar, and it goes down 2 lines...

Note: I was writing a new email in Touchdown (exchange email) and was trying that delete issue.. and the Fire crashed.. and rebooted. Now, the issues above are no longer happening.. But the sensitivity of the keyboard seems a bit much..

Anyone else?

My keyboard is acting very strangely. It will randomly drop out when I'm trying to enter text. Sometimes the cursor will jump to the front of the line -- also at random -- very annoying when you are trying to type in a password.

Also having problems with touchscreen sensitivity and video playback. Hoping I just got a dud.

We are having the same crazy keyboard issues. I hope they can fix this with a software update. The keyboard disappears when you are typing in portrait mode and in landscape mode when you hit the "o" it types the "o" and a "q". Its really annoying.

I'm not having any keyboard issues and I've typed a few e-mails this am. Hope it straightens itself out for you all.

Michelle -- Call Amazon Kindle Support. I had to go through a couple of tech guys, but they are sending me a replacement immediately. They were very helpful. I think mine was an issue with the touch screen (not necessarily the keyboard). Some parts of the screen worked and some didn't, which I think may be why the keyboard wasn't working correctly.

No real issues with the keyboard, other than I think a stylus would help me out enormously. Can't wait for it to get here!

Kindle fire won't connect to wi-fi. Diagnostic says password is incorrect but it works with my PC. Also, note at bottom says "Complete Setup Later". I've never used a Kindle so am pretty green. It's charged for several hours. Any suggestions? What does "Complete Setup later" infer? thanks

Nobody says:
Which one did you order? I saw one with lots of great reviews but it was out of stock.

I ordered the set below when it was a few dollars cheaper. It's still out of stock. I may breakdown and order another set if they don't come in soon.

AmazonBasics Stylus for Touchscreen Devices Including Kindle Fire, Apple iPad 2, the New iPad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab, BlackBerry PlayBook

Susan,
Thanks for the advice. Received a replacement for the Kindle Fire and now the keyboard works fine. After playing around with it we realized that it was a defect in the screen not the keyboard. Kindle support was very helpful.

Is there any way to turn off the Fire's word suggestion insert when typing?

I have set the keyboard setting "quick fixes" to "off" but it insists on replacing what I type with what it thinks is correct, a real pita if not noticed when it happens.

Also, is there any "undo?"

There is a "discard changes" in the action menu, but, be careful... it discards _all_ changes.

Seeing some crazy keyboard issues. Flips to all-caps, enters a letter from the other side of the keyboard (type p and get q), keyboard hides when typing, etc. From the posts above, it looks like I'm stuck with returning the junkie little thing and getting a replacement junkie little thing.

I'm having the same problems. The touchscreen, esp. the keyboard, is erratic to the point of making the device worthless. I'm returning it and don't want the frustration of a replacement. Maybe I'll buy the Nook tablet if I can try it out in the store. I will not be purchasing any Amazon electronics again.

fwiw, I have come to the same conclusion and returning mine as well. I will probably post my tech observations about using the Fire here later today.

>> Maybe I'll buy the Nook tablet <<

I have several years of Kindle reading experience on the apple iOS devices (iPhone/iTouch/iPad) and I would strongly suggest considering the apple iPod Touch as it has become my favorite ebook platform and it fully supports Kindle EBooks using the Kindle Reader app for about the same price as the Fire.

Surprisingly, even though the iTouch's physical screen size is half (actually quarter) of the Fire's screen size (3.5" vs 7") the touch's pixel screen resolution is almost the same as the Fire's making the screen much easier to read than the Fire and easily usable with one hand.

I ordered the 3 Pack of Universal Touch Screen Stylus Pen (Red + Black + Silver), they just came today, as well as the microfiber cloths I ordered, and the stylus pen works much better than my finger on the Fire.

bevhoward,
I've not experienced Fire trying to change what I type or suggesting any words. I did turn off 'fix' ... Nevertheless, when using the facebook app (and I think the apps might control these things), I was responding to someone in a private message and typed:

"Hiya!"

The next thing I see? It's been changed to "Jihad!"

I thought I must have pressed some goofy button, but no -- I tried it again and the same thing happened. When I put a space between the word and the exclamation point, then it was okay. :-)

I've heard of this happening with an email app, so the apps
seem to be able to overidd our Fire settings.

I looked at that one too, but it was out of stock then too. I have to do something, my fingers aren't sausages, but its a pain to have back-space all the time.....& don't mention the fingerprints. Here's a link to the one I ordered:
BoxWave EverTouch Capacitive Stylus - (Newest Technology) Touchscreen iPad 3 Stylus with Ultra Durable FiberMesh Fabric Tip for Apple iPad 3, new iPad (3rd Generation), iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, Amazon Kindle Fire, All Touch Screen Tablets - NEW VERSION - (Metallic Silver)
Haven't tried it yet, but it gets good reviews.

fwiw, a couple of hard learned finger tips from three years of dinking with apple iOS devices.

Biggest tip is that "tapping" does not result in an action. The typing or other action occurs when you remove your finger from the screen.

Since there is an on screen indication showing what your finger hit, if you see you tapped the wrong character, this fact allows you to "slide" over to the correct character before you release the tap. Two benefits... no backspacing and it is an excellent learning aid to find where to tap for a specific character.

Next, the "sense point" is normally under the "fat" of your finger tip... and out of sight. Take a felt marker and place a "dot" in the middle of this part of your finger tip, then when you type, use the "dot" as a reference on where to tap for each character.

As mentioned earlier, look for hidden tricks such as tapping and holding the "period" to bring up a full set of punctuation keys, then slide to the one you want and release.

When you need single numbers or special characters tap and hold the "numbers" key, then silde to the number or character you want and release. When you release, the character will be typed and you will be returned to the alpha keyboard without having to hit the "ABC" key to return.

I've noticed sporadic delays when typing, especially if I'm a bit too fast. The lag seems to effective the space key more than any other keys. I just correct my typo's and move on. I haven't encountered any other issues yet. Sounds like you're experiencing an especially difficult problem
