"Interesting" - By I. Darren (Fi)

Wine is big business in the United States of America, not just through consumption but as a producing business and ancillary service sector.

This is a bit of a specialist book, looking at the economic circumstances surrounding the American wine business, allowing a fairly detailed look at an entire self-sufficient business sector (from grape to store). Building on strong economic principles to explain how grape growers, wine producers, distributors, retailers and consumers interact and influence the wine market.

The author notes that the United States is (presently) the world's largest per capita consumer of wine (although other countries will be chasing that record). Naturally Americans don't just consume "their own" wine, yet this large market and the prospect of examining an entire self-sufficient business sector is irresistible and it can be of interest to many outside of the wine sector too as a business case examination.

"Exceptional and comprehensive narrative on California wine industry's present and future, its producers, and how it got there" - By Valerie P Masten

The New California Wine is an exceptional and comprehensive narrative on the California wine industry's past, present, and future, and includes a reference guide to a generation of winemakers interested in exploring CA's abundant history of farming vineyards and CA's terroir. It also includes many producers who may have been criticized by the press- such as Ridge or Corison, but emerged as an alternative to what Bonne calls "Big Flavor." The first 70 pages fly by- Bonne's style of writing is easily digestible even though it contains some serious technical information on farming, biodynamics, and winemaking philosophies. Bonne relies on the narratives of several 'leaders' of this 'New CA wine' to weave together a comprehensive picture of history, winemaking and farming practices, and terroirs of CA - both forgotten and new. The final section, a reference guide to producers organized by grape variety, highlights those farmers/winemakers/producers who are seeking out ... full review

"A MUST read for every American" - By S. Troup (Pittsford, NY United States)

You will be shocked at the effects factory farming is having on the safety of our food. This book is most effective after viewing the film; however, it is an incredible eye-opener. It expands on topics seen in the film like genetic modification of seeds and the ramifications of this process. You will also learn more about the treatment of immigrant workers in this country and will soon understand why no Americans want to do the work. TO add insult to injury you will be blown to frustration over the politics involved. If you eat food and you think you are 100% safe under our food safety policies, you need to see the film and read this book.

"Fun read!" - By Lisa Mendell

A great look into the wacky world of Chelsea Handler's staff and what it is like to be a comedian and mother in Los Angeles. I can't think of anything more fun that hanging out with Heather with a glass of wine.

"Snarky Snark -" - By Siddielou (New York, NY)

First of all, those reviewers who call Lancaster "vapid," "shallow," "immature," etc must not have read the book's subtitle. Words like "Self-Indulgent," "Surly," "Ex-Sorority," "Sucks," and "Idiots" are pretty big context clues that the author wasn't winning any Jr. Miss Mother Teresa pageants.

See, Lancaster bought the dream: go to school, work hard, get a good job, and live a wonderfully exciting and glamorous life in the city. Of course things didn't work out that way - just look at her first memoir [[ASIN:0451217608 Bitter is the New Black : Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass,Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office]] (NB: the subtitle of this book also provides some clues as to why she wasn't living in a mud hut immunizing three legged dogs and orphans in some far off war torn country)

"If YOU want to be a Person Of Influence....." - By Sonya Lenzo (San jose, Costa Rica and Edina, MN)

Read this book!

I've been in sales for more than 30 years and have always prided myself on checking out the top 10 sales books of the year. Most of them were one idea plus fluff. No matter, it still helped to keep me "fresh" because the vast majority of sales folks don't read the top 10 sales books and don't change their sales presentations. If they have survived for more than a year, a lot of them have fallen back on the "numbers" theory: call X number of people, see X number of people, propose to X number of people, and you will make $$$ amount of money. Its a hard and boring way to be a salesperson.
About 7 years ago, I met Dr. Hogan. His approach, from his earliest books to this current one, has been one of authenticity, empathetic relationship building and always doing ... full review

"A Great Second Book After Cialdini" - By C. Oliver (Worcester, MASSACHUSETTS United States)

Where Cialdini left off, where the information may not have been completely fulfilling, and where there may not have been a clear and pressing structure of use, The Science of Influence by Kevin Hogan fills in the gaps. This strong and well written book, details beautifully the world of influence, the power of persuasion, and how to use it. Though you may not get to yes in eight minutes, you can very possibly get a yes a lot quicker than you would with anything else. Kevin Hogan, I believe, comes from the school of NLP, now, for some people that may be a negative, for others, you may be asking what the heck NLP is. Neuro-Linguistic Programming, is a collection of psychological techniques that were put together by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, on how language can be used to effect the minds of people. ... full review

"Extreme yet personal" - By James R Thomssen (Nampa Idaho)

Five stars because this book makes you aware of how much you don't know about the world of wine but at the same time let's you know you don't have to. We all can learn the basics by extending our reach to the far reaches of the wine shelves at our local purveyor of vino and sharing our experiences ( and choices) with friends around the braai. ( read the book to find out!)

Well written and a great read. Mike takes you around the world and back in time to explore the edges of wine that can enthralling the 1% as well as captivate the rest of us.

"The City of Angels meets the Great Recession....." - By Captdoherty (LOS ANGELES, CA, United States)

Having just moved to Los Angeles, I found myself reading and enjoying this wonderful little guide book, which provides literally hundreds of great ideas of things you can do in the city on a small budget (something that is badly needed in today's challenging economy.)

I have lived in Los Angeles twice before and really thought I knew alot of great things to do here. After reading this book, I realize now that I had only been scratching the surface.

What I especially loved about the book was its creativity. I have read many a guidebook that shows the cool places to go and attractions to see in a particular place. Up until now, I had never read one that actually informs you of the best places to "dumpster dive" and gives a strategy on how you can place an effective "craig's list" add to obtain free ... full review
