"Convenient kit - traditional approach made simple" - By James S. Mcdonald (Palo Alto, CA United States)
This kit is essentially what anyone can do on their own but it is conveniently packaged. The goop everyone is referring to is essentially the same as automotive valve grinding compound (which you can get at most auto parts stores). I like the idea of using a power drill to turn the reel while it sharpens - so here's an alternative for anyone who feels like taking a DIY approach:
1. Prop up the lawn mower so you can turn the reel by twirling the wheels.
2. Check the blades for nicks and burrs. If you find any, remove them with a file (hold file flat against blade and push away from spindle). I use a sharpening stone that fits my power drill but that's b/c I'm lazy.
3. Check your bar alignment, it'll be obvious if it's off - it will ... full review
My garden tools were very dull. After spending a frustrating afternoon removing a large bush, I did a quick search on Amazon and ordered this. Took me less than 5 mins to sharpen all of our garden tools. They were fabulous to use afterwords. Our neighbor borrowed it the next day and word got around that we had it. By the end of the week, ten of our neighbors had borrowed it and it still worked great. Great return on investment!
"Das smelly mower ist kaputt!" - By HPLC_Tech (Suwanee, GA USA)
I admit that I was a heavy user of those noisy and stinky gas machines, until recently when the self-propel feature went kaputt half way through the job. I found myself pushing a 6HP B&S mower in 90+ degree heat. The phrase "walk behind mower" suddenly had real meaning. The very next weekend I went to a local garden store and purchased the 18in American Lawn Mower (at a lower price than my favorite web retailer). Setup was very easy except for those darn e-clips. It was fortunate that the manufacturer included an extra e-clip because I mangled the first one. I opted to leave the foam grip off. The material seems like it would deteriorate in a few months anyway, but if you have delicate hands it's a must. This was my first reel ... full review
"Just starting out, am liking this." - By M. CUNNINGHAM (Columbia, MD)
I have gone from gasoline push mowers for many years to a battery-powered electric mower for 4 years to this corded electric. My yard is approximately 1/3 acre corner lot.
My issue with a gasoline mower has been that the exhaust has caused coughing spells. Besides that I was getting tired of handling gasoline, oil, and dirty air filters, and the odors of gasoline. The battery-powered mower was fine with new lead-acid batteries but after over-wintering, the batteries lost their capacity. This became non-cost-effective due to the high cost of the batteries.
So I decided to try a corded electric mower. From shopping, I noticed the Greenworks 25022 had a lot of high reviews which trumped the Black and Decker and other brands. Ordered it from Amazon and Amazon provided its usual impeccable service.
After years of making due with a no name mower, I finally decided to upgrade. After researching mowers, I decided on the Lawn Boy 17730. It starts easier than any other mower I have used. It cuts great and pushes easily. It's fairly quiet and even though we aren't required to be CARB compliant in my town, I feel better knowing that it is. Very satisfied and my lawn has never looked better.
This is an excellent book with lots of pictures on how to fix lawnmowers and diagnose their problems. I had gotten tired of taking mine to the shop every time the ethanol laden E10 fuel we have around here messed up the carburetor. The book is written for both novices and experienced handy-type people as well.
The jack seems strong and provides very good elavation to get under deck. Very easy to put together however the directions were not very usefull. The only issue is that to use it is a two person operation. One to drive the mower on and off the jack and one to hold it from moving. I would reccomend this product.

"My cheap tools have never worked better!" - By SC (CT)
Really, all those weak moments where I grabbed the cheaper hand plane or bargain chisels have just about paid off. Usually it's just counted as a frustrating loss of time and money, but I put that HD block plane blade through the WS2000 and I covered the floor with walnut shavings in just a few minutes. Does it get any cheaper than HF? I put their 7 dollar set of chisels through and I was able to curve stop my huge chamfered edge. Admittedly, it did work better with my slightly more expensive chisel though, which makes me think it at least lets each tool reach its full potential (however low that may be).
This sharpener is really something I never thought I'd use, especially at $100. But then I looked through catalogs of sharpening stones, solutions and grinders - suddenly $100 didn't seem ... full review

"Concerned about reel mowers? Don't be." - By skst (Arlington Hts., IL USA)
I own a John Deere 4.5 hp 22" gas-powered (4-stroke) self-propelled mulching mower. I think it retailed for about $600-700 ten years ago. It's performed very well, but it needs annual service; it needs to be cleaned, and it clogs if the grass is damp or too tall. I'm not sure what made me look at reel mowers on Amazon. Maybe it was wondering how I was going to transport my gas-powered mower to John Deere for service this year. Maybe it was my surprise when I saw I'd have to buy gas twice in one season this year. Having to tune the carburetor almost every week this season? Breathing in unfiltered exhaust? Whatever the reason, I found this mower on Amazon and was intrigued by the idea of a clean, quiet mower. The fact that its cutting method might be better for my lawn was just a bonus. No ... full review
