How does a lama survive in modern America?

I am curious how a Tibetan lama can survive in materialistic America (even if he is originally an American).

I live in Singapore where the majority of the population are nominal Buddhists, and I believe Buddha's Holy Dhamma is the only worthwhile pursuit; yet I can't imagine living a homeless life as a monk.
