Agree mostly with a poster above, a matching Cross pen and pencil set, without the engraved name. If he is a white collar worker, it will definitely be noticed by his co-workers/clients, etc. A nice touch of class.
If he likes music, I'd suggest good headphones, earbuds, ipod shuffle, or a decent mp3 player. If he's a gym goer, maybe get his a 3 month-6 month membership to his gym, some work out powder (Whey and Casein Protein), or a good pair of running shoes. If he likes taking pictures, you could get him a digital camera (maybe even an underwater camera : http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-EasyShare-Waterproof-Digital-Camera/dp/B004FLL5BS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1355798551&sr=8-8&keywords=underwater+camera).
If your relatives are around and were good enough cooks, make a video of them describing how to make his favorite dishes and some of their stories about food and meals. Then make a basket with all the ingredients of his most favorite. Some day he can share the videos and food with his kids.
you HAVE TO check out fab.com AND gifts.com. I love amazon, (obviously I'm here) but seriously- all of my guy friends this year got gifts from those two websites- and they are the bomb.... it's like the late-20's/ 30-something version of urban outfitters
