As _Vulcan's Glory_ is my all-time favourite Trek tie-in novel, I'm really looking forward to further adventures of Pike and Number One. Was there any reason the title was changed from _To Thine Own Self_? Also, will Number One have a big part? WIll the novel explore her personal relationship with Pike at all? In addition to Boyce and Spock, will any of the other crew from "The Cage" be featured, like Yeoman Colt?

Hi Tara:
Hah! Vulcan's Glory. You know, back in the day, I was the editor of the Star Trek books, and I have to say that one of my biggest thrills was meeting Dorothy Fontana and getting her to write that all I can say is, I hope you like Children of Kings close to as much as that one! It's actually more of a Dr. Boyce novel than anything - though everyone you mention above is in there, and there are several scenes between Number One and Pike, as well as between her and Spock, that I hope ring true for you.
Title change was made because Children of Kings ended up seeming more appropriate to myself and Margaret Clark, the editor, who generated the germ of the idea which became the book....
Thanks again for writing, hope you enjoy...

I have the original copy and the 40th anniversary reissue of Vulcan's Glory, with Dorothy's new afterward, where she discusses you commissioning the novel. So when I heard you were writing a Pike-era novel, I was thrilled. I adore Phil Boyce, and can't wait to read his wacky adventures with the Syndicate. I loved the parallels between Phil and Cait Barry (from Dorothy's novel) and Chris and Number One, and so really looking forward to seeing those relationships explored further (I assume without Cait, since she's Fontana's original character and only appears in PAD's _The Rift_).

So was it originally titled _To Thine Own Self_ and then changed to _Children of Kings_?

That is exactly right - re: the title change.

I have to say I tried to walk a fine line between all the different versions of Pike-era Trek floating around - Dorothy's, the last movie's, Margaret Bonanno's, the comics... I tried to pay homage to all, while being bound by none. I'll be interested in your feedback as to how I did...

I am so glad IDW reprinted the Marvel _Early Voyages_ comics, as well as publishing Byrne's Number One miniseries _Crew_ and _Romulans: Schism_. My love of "The Cage" characters really was reawakened due to Bruce Greenwood's performance as Pike in Star Trek (2009), and so I've had a blast reading every single tie-in I could find.

I admit, the end of "The Menagerie" with Pike accepting a fantasy life with Vina (whom I've always figured went completely mad from loneliness before Enterprise showed up) just never sat well with me. So I had a hard time with Bonanno's novel, even though _Burning Dreams_ is an excellent read. I do have a huge soft spot for Jerry Oltion's "Conflicting Emotions" in _Enterprise Logs_, and _Where Sea Meets Sky_, even though he favours Colt over Number One in the romance department...

I promise I'll hold off on inundating you with posts until I have _Children_ in my hot little hands, and can give you proper feedback. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, though! I really do appreciate it, and I've been passing along the discussion to the other fans at the Pike/Number One livejournal community. There's a small niche fandom-with-a-fandom of Pike and Number One fans who are all waited with bated breath for the novel, I promise!
