It is the story of a caterpillar that has a fantastic life full of games, friends, school and leaf eating. He is stunned when he discovers that he is expected to build a chrysalis and become a butterfly. At first, he refuses to build a chrysalis, but eventually joins his friends and becomes a butterfly. It is a fun book, but also helpful to kids anticipating a change in their life.

Reply to this post.

To All Beginning and Prospective High School Teachers

Everyone who has ever gone to school has an idea of what it would be like to be a teacher. Unfortunately, that idea is based on seeing only the tip of the iceberg, the performance the teacher delivers in the classroom. If you have a minute, I would love to hear some opinions on what resources you find most helpful in the classroom. Are there certain books or websites that you draw from again and again? Or was there a particular workshop you attended over the summer that taught you techniques that have been wildly successful in your classroom? Do you find it difficult or easy to integrate new resources into your lesson plans? Why?Thank you so much in advance for any wisdom you have to share! It is a presentation that I have shared with thousands of educators as Michigan Teacher of the Year. It is broken up into six segments that would be great for staff meetings, opening day meetings of a new school year, new teacher training sessions, and/or for college students and student teachers preparing to teach. My goal is to help spread a positive epidemic in education to believe we can -- and will -- conquer the many challenges we currently face. Together we will create our next great moment in teaching that people will be talking about for years to come. Also, included in this free presentation, are four strategies (called "Setting the Table for Success") every teacher can use in their classroom to help build a positive, safe, and productive learning environment where individuals work together to achieve team goals while striving for individual best. Go to my website's homepage (www.bestyearever.net) and "click" on the icon "We Can Do This!" to view and download the video -- absolutely free! I hope you like it and will share it with others. Thanks! I also want to speak to Western society's prevailing and disturbing prejudice against this noble profession. In 1978 one of my students died tragically in an automobile accident on her way to my office to talk over her career plans. It was the suddenness of her death, along with the utter loss of so much potential, which left me wondering whether anything I had said in class had made a difference in her too-short life or, for that matter, in the lives of any of my students. Her death was not only a great misfortune but also a defining moment for me. For the first time in my life as a teacher, and I had been at it for only five years, I realized in the weeks that followed that I wasn't in the classroom for myself. I was and remains there for the students, all of whom are giving me three hours a week of their most precious possession - their time. What I say and do should make a difference in their lives. The worst thief is a bad teacher. The book is a series of l6 letters "to" that student as I imagine what I would have said to her had she completed her degree and gone on into the teaching profession as she dreamed of doing.

Reply to this post.

Dale F.
