Designed for avid hunters and sports enthusiasts, Simmons ProSport binoculars give you an up-close, strikingly clear view. All ProSport binoculars bring the action up-close and feature high-quality, multicoated optics and BaK-4 prisms. They're nitrogen-purged for full waterproof and fogproof performance. Plus, ProSport binoculars are encased in tough and durable rubber armor, for a sure grip and added protection in bad weather conditions.
From the product features: "Wide range of magnifications and configurations" I am not sure what a "configuration is" but it seems that this is a "zoom' lens since it has a "wide range of magnifications". So, please ^A^ tell us more about this device.

A 12X50 has 12X magnification only, and a 50mm objective lens diameter. A most important specification that is not mentioned is this model's "eye relief" in mm. Lesser makers are notorious for bogus claims, so even if this low-end model claims 20mm eye relief a customer would be smart to examine the goods carefully to see if they work as claimed. A true 18mm or greater eye relief [known as a high eyepoint ocular] is needed for acceptable use while wearing glasses.

@A So the claim "wide range of magnifications" is a flat out lie and misrepresentation of this product? Perhaps you can offer some explanation on the "configuration" bit?

bj jimbo, Billa was just remarking on Amazon's worse-than-useless
"Product Features Multi-coated, high quality optical glass BaK-4 prisms for brilliant light transmission Rubber armor coating for better grip and protection Wide range of magnifications and configurations Waterproof, nitrogen purged and fully fogproof"
on Amazon's page for these. If these were nitrogen purged and genuinely waterproof, I migh buy one myself. Having some experience with falsely described optical goods, I'll pass. Sorry if I seemed like a know-it-all for mentioning the eye relief specification of which most lemmings are ignorant. Building and testing optics has been a hobby of mine for decades.

Some people are reading too much into this. If you go to the manufacturer's website http://www.simmonsoptics.com/binoculars/ProSport_Roof.cfm you will see that the description "Wide range of magnifications and configurations" is referring to the fact that they produce this model in magnifications from 8x21 to 12x50 and configurations indicating "matte, black or camo" finish and "BaK-4" or "BK7" prism glass. Unfortunately the description on Amazon is a copy paste of the manufaturer's features for all versions of this model, applied to one version. Not the first time I've seen poor/misleading descriptions here. Nothing a simple web search can't clarify. For those interested, it states that the eye relief on this model is 16mm.

So are are the detractors here saying that there is a better general use set of binoculars for the same price point, or is it a case of thread-cr*pping? If there is a better equivalently priced alternative please post it.

What you get for what you pay depends on how carefully you shop, Tim. I'm not doing your shopping for you . I'm not touting any maker's or seller's goods. Just hope to help y'all educate yourselves as "consumers", which seems to be what too many Americans have degenerated into.

I'm so glad that Amazon is taking good care of the bird watchers today. And.. love the marketing shpeel with this product.. "tough and durable rubber armor".. Other adjectives "avid, strikingly, high-quality, full waterproof (like there's partial), armor"... They paid some serious $$$ for marketing of that caliber.

Good comments - thanks for an interesting discussion. Reading all this does help a consumer. I googled these and found that this model is marked down at Gander Mountain at $99, so people buying this product on that sight are getting what they pay for. I'm staying here for my purchase.

I think they mean that in the Simmons Prosport line they offer a wide range of magnifications and specifications among the different models, but this deal is for one specific binocular.

@D I agree and because it happens here too often I suggest the ^A^ allow the "copy and pastors" more freedom to use better erroneous content. That way you will at least have the enjoyment of anticipation before the item arrives, that which you thought was a real deal. When you open the box and the truth becomes apparent, what, you mean it was not made of gold and comes with a life time warranty! Don't worry, be happy just return it.
