The one at Lowes wasn't a hammer drill and it wasn't lithium-ion... I got this drill (not the combo) a few years ago from amazon Gold Box for $135. That deal was better in my opinion but if you need the light then this comes close to that. The light by itself no batteries is $40 from amazon. Love the drill.

Who writes this stuff, the drill is "user-friendly"? As opposed to what?

Yes but the LI battery makes all the difference in the world. Much better.

As opposed to a user-fiendly drill. You know, the kind that drills through your hand or explodes in your face or bursts into flames and gives you third-degree burns.

Why do the makers of cordless tools always stick in an unwanted itme such as this flashlight attachment or a car-vac attachment. If they want to put something extra in a second battery would be most welcome.

An extra battery would cut into future profits. An extra gadget without an expensive battery to run it may enhance future profits.

If I'm not mistaken I believe this set does come with 2 batteries though, does it not?

Jason Wagner says:
Most people do not need a hammer-drill for 99% of their use unless you live in a cinderblock or concrete house. My preference is a smaller and lighter drill without the hammerdrill feature. You can get this set DEWALT DCK280C2 20-Volt Max Li-Ion 1.5 Ah Compact Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit for $199 at stores or on here when the price isn't jacked up. It's got a very usefull extra tool in the impact driver vs. the light in this kit.

BTW - DeWalt 18V and 20V batteries are essentially the same thing. They made the 20V battery to create a different line of tools. I like the 20V because they're thinner than the 18V Li-ion.

Mr. Frugal says:
The main difference besides the obvious cosmetic and slight weight difference is the Amp Hour rating. The 18V has a 2.4Ah while the 20V has a 3.0Ah rating. The difference is a 20% longer run time. I would consider that a significant improvement. I would like 20% more money than I have would be the standard argument. Other than that I agree with your suggestion 100%. The compact impact driver replaced my drill driver for 90% of the time.

Jason Wagner says:
careful, there are two different 20V batteries. One group are 1.5Ah and the other are 3.0Ah (MAX). The 3.0Ah MAX tool bundle comes with a hammer drill.

But some of us like to get hammered.

NiteWalker says:
There are no 20 volt batteries; they're all 18 volts. Measuring voltage fresh off the charge will read 20 volts. During use this drops to the typical 18 volts.

Pretty soon, dewalt is releasing 2.0ah compact and 4.0ah big batteries.

Recently purchased an 18 volt L.I. at Sears with two batteries. No flashlight or carrying case. Use it around the house for odd jobs. Paid Sixty bucks . If you need all the extras go for it. If not shop around. House wifes take note as mentioned above your Hubby or Other could care less about a Flashlight.

yeah,, with one of those old fashion batteries that may not last 6 months, esp if you leave it plugged in for more than 24 hours.. I have a dozen dead units on my shelf.

The flashlights can be very useful.
I got a free dewalt 12 volt max light via rebate when I bought a couple of their 12 volt max tools.

It's very useful for seeing under cabinets to fix a leaky pipe or inside the tablesaw to clean it out.

Drill and Hammer Drill are not the same thing. Some hammer drills have the ability to be a normal drill as well but not all drills have a hammer.

Does this hammer drill work like a regular drill?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 7, 2012 7:41:51 PM PST
NiteWalker says:
Yes, it works as a two speed drill/driver and a two speed bpm hammer drill.

Trust Me says:
I notice this item comes with the compact battery. I bought a Dewalt drill with two of these batteries a year and a half ago. One of the batteries is kaput, even though there are not many charge cycles on it. The compact battery only has a one year guarantee. The big brother has a two year. Don't let this keep you from buying this kit, but know that the compact battery has its limitations. Happily, with the current $25 discount, I can get the bigger battery for less than the cost of the compact.

I have to say, this is my third cordless drill and the first that feels solid and strong.
