Keyword Search

Keyword Search boxes can be found at the top of most pages of our bookstore. Enter one or more keywords using any combination of the title or author's name. If you use more than one keyword, our search engine will restrict the results to products that match all the keywords you enter.

Our keyword search also allows you to search for phrases found within the text of books participating in our Search Inside the Book program. Simply enter the phrase in quotes in the search box. On the search results page, you'll see excerpts from the books that contain that phrase. Clicking the page number will allow you to view the page on which the phrase appears. Advanced Search

If you want to specify which of your search terms should match the author's name and which should match the title, you should conduct an Advanced Search. You can access this anywhere in our bookstore by clicking the Search link on the left side of the top navigation bar.

You can also search by subject, ISBN, or publisher. Specifying these facts can be very helpful if you are trying to distinguish one book from many similar items, but we recommend doing so only when absolutely necessary. If you choose to search by ISBN, search only by that and make sure you type the number correctly, without any dashes. If you choose to search by subject or publisher, we suggest you specify only the main word from the subject or publisher's name. For example, conduct a search for "O'Reilly" to find all titles by O'Reilly and Associates.

You can refine your search even further by format (hardcover, paperback, e-book, audiobook, large print, calendar), reader age (baby-3, 4-8, 9-12, teen and older), language (Spanish), or publication date (before, during, or after any year).

Finally, you can choose to sort your search results in the way that makes the most sense to you: Featured Items, Bestselling, Average Customer Review, Price, Publication date, or alphabetically.

When searching our bookstore, you can sort your search results in the way that is most useful to you. Once your search has produced a list of relevant items, select a way to sort by clicking the "Sort results by" box at the top of the list and then the Go! button.

There are two major ways to find children's books in our bookstore.

Click the Browse Subjects link in the top navigation bar of any page of our bookstore, then click the link to the Children's Books home page. From there you can browse for titles by reader age and in specialty stores, or peruse lists of bestsellers, new releases, classics, and award winners, among others.

Click the Search link in the top navigation bar of any page of our bookstore. Enter a few words from the author's name, title, or subject into the appropriate fields. You can also choose to restrict your search further by selecting a range of ages in the Reader age drop-down menu. Click the Search Now button for a list of books that match your criteria.

Don't know exactly what kind of book you're in the mood for? Use the links on the top navigation bar of our bookstore to browse by subject, bestsellers, new and future releases, bargains, and more.

You can now actually search the text within books on a growing number of titles in our bookstore. You can read excerpts from within the books and view the pages on which those excerpts appear. This way, you can see if you like what you're reading before you buy. Look for the Search Inside logo on books that offer this feature. Read more.

The only information we can give you about a particular title in our bookstore is what we display on the product detail page for that item. Links to reviews, excerpts, tables of contents, author interviews, and related articles can be found on the item's product detail page.

There are thousands of audiobooks for sale in our bookstore. If you have a particular audiobook in mind, use the Format drop-down menu on our Advanced Search page. Search results pages will indicate whether the audiobook's format is cassette or CD. For more information about audiobooks, click here.

The binding of each item in our bookstore is usually listed on that item's product detail page. While it is possible to conduct a format-specific search, it is not currently possible to restrict a search to every type of binding available. A description of popular bindings follows:

• Board Book: Designed for infants, the pages of these books are made of thick cardboard that can support extra wear and tear. To find this type of book, try a Books keyword search for "board book".
• Hardcover: The common bookstore variety of hardcover book usually comes with a dust jacket. Hardcover books that feature pages that are bound slightly unevenly are referred to as "roughcut." This intentional aesthetic feature has no impact on the sturdiness of the binding.
• Lap Books: Also known as "big books," this larger type of children's book is frequently used by teachers so that they can read in front of a class and hold the book up to show the pictures. You can find these with a subject search for "big books."
• Lay-Flat: This new type of double binding allows the book to lie flat and frees up ones hands to use a keyboard. Although the feature is sometimes mistaken for a detached spine, it is intentional and as sturdy as a conventional binding.
• Mass Market Paperback: The format of these hand-sized books is commonly used for bestsellers, mysteries, and science fiction titles.
• Paperback: This can mean a variety of things, from larger computer-oriented books with paper covers to the medium-sized, so-called "quality paperback" format frequently used for literature titles.
• Plastic Comb Binding: Commonly used for cookbooks and other "how-to" books, this binding is more flexible than a metal spiral binding.
• School/Library Binding: This is the most durable form of hardcover, bound for the heaviest use. These rarely come with a dust jacket since paper covers don't last long in the school or library environment.
• Spiral Binding: This metal binding is often used for workbooks or other "how-to" books, as it makes it easy to leave the book open to a specific page.
• Textbook Binding: This sturdier variety of hardcover binding is better suited to being open longer and used more frequently. This type of binding occasionally comes with a dust jacket.
• Turtleback Binding: Often used by libraries for titles that require additional stability, this binding is a paperback reinforced with cardboard.

Although Amazon.com does not sell used or out-of-print books, we make it easy for our customers to find these items through Amazon Marketplace. On some product detail pages, you'll notice a box labeled "More buying choices." The links in this box will take you to lists of used, collectible, or new editions that are available from registered third-party sellers. You can find our large selection of musical scores and songbooks by clicking the Browse Subjects link at the top of any page of our bookstore. Click the Sheet Music & Scores link at the bottom of the next page to peruse specific categories such as Composers, Forms & Genres, and Instrumentation. You can also search for these types of items by entering the word "score" or "songbook" in the keyword search box at the top of most pages of our bookstore.

Publishers typically first release a book in hardcover and then make a paperback edition available about a year later. If the book is a bestseller, publishers may sometimes postpone the release of the paperback edition even longer. We make paperback editions available for pre-order as soon as the publisher informs us of the official publication date.
