Kindle Fire HD 7" Software Update

We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Fire HD 7”. This update automatically downloads and installs for Kindle Fire HD 7” customers when connected wirelessly; however, you can also manually download the software and update your device via USB cable.

In addition to bug fixes and performance improvements, the software update adds the following features to your Kindle Fire:

  • Language Support for Canadian English and Canadian French

    You can now change your device language to Canadian English and Canadian French.

  • Enable Battery Percentage in the Status Bar

    You can now see the total amount of battery life remaining at the top of the screen when you enable this feature in the Device menu.

Download Version 7.4.3

Here’s how to download or transfer the latest software update to your Kindle Fire. Before you begin, check the current software version on your device:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen, and then tap More.
  2. Tap Device, and then tap About. If you have the latest update, it should like this:

  3. If you see an earlier version, please proceed with either of the steps below to update your Kindle to the latest software.

Download the software update to your Kindle Fire automatically:

Sync your Kindle Fire to download the latest software update wirelessly.

  1. Charge the battery, and then connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen, and then tap Sync.

The software update automatically downloads in the background and installs after the download is complete and the device is asleep.

Your Kindle Fire will restart during the software update. After the restart, the message “Your Kindle Is Restarting” will appear on the screen.

Download the software update and transfer it to your Kindle Fire via USB:

  1. Download your software: Click the following link to download the software update file directly to your computer:

  2. Transfer software to your Kindle Fire: Turn on your Kindle Fire and unlock the screen. Then, connect it to your computer using a USB cable. Open the Kindle Fire drive (the drive is typically displayed as a "device" icon), and then drag and drop the software update file into the Internal storage folder. Do not drop the file into any other folder in Internal storage.

  3. Monitor file transfer and disconnect: Check your file transfer progress to ensure file transfer to your Kindle is complete before disconnecting. After the file has transferred successfully, disconnect the USB cable from your Kindle and your computer.

  4. Start the software update: On the Home screen, swipe down from the top and select More. Tap Device, and then tap About. Then tap Update Your Kindle. Your Kindle will restart during the update. After the restart, you will see the message "Your Kindle is Restarting" appear on the screen.

  5. Once the update is complete and your Kindle has restarted: If your software update was successful, your System Version should now read 7.4.3_user_4309320.

Troubleshooting Update Issues

The Update Your Kindle button is unavailable or can't be pressed.

The update file is in the incorrect directory, or was not transferred successfully.

Plug your Kindle back into your computer and verify the update file is present in the Internal storage folder.

Note: If your software version is below 7.3.0, you will need to drag and drop the software update file to the kindleupdates folder in Internal storage. After the software update file has been placed in the kindleupdates folder, return to your Kindle Fire and tap the Update Your Kindle button. The kindleupdates folder will no longer be present on your device after you update the software to the latest version.

The file name for the software update is incorrect, or it contains extra characters (for example, “(1)” is affixed to the end of the file). You may have downloaded a duplicate software update file to your computer. Remove the duplicate file from your computer, and then download and transfer the software update to your Kindle again.

File download won't complete or doesn't appear to start.

Your firewall software may be blocking the download.

Verify that your firewall is set up to allow the file transfer.

Internet Explorer may prevent downloads.

Right-click the download link and select save as to save the file to your computer. If this method is unsuccessful, complete the following steps to download as an Administrator:

  1. From Start, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon.
  2. Select Run as Administrator.
  3. Return to this page and try the download again.

Received an error message when selecting Update Your Kindle.

Incomplete download.

Download the software update again.

The software update file was renamed.

Delete the update file on your computer and Kindle, and repeat the software update process above.

Battery level insufficient Charge your battery greater than 40% and try again.
