Amazon Appstore for Android on Kindle Fire


With Amazon Appstore for Android, you can shop for and instantly download apps and games to your Kindle Fire 1st Generation. You can also take advantage of the Free App of the Day and download a new paid app every day.

Setting Up Your Account and Payment Method

To successfully purchase digital content from the Amazon Appstore for Android, you must set up your 1-Click payment method. When purchasing paid apps, your 1-Click payment method must be a credit or debit card issued by a bank with a valid billing address in one of the supported countries.

Note: U.S. customers are not required to have a credit or debit card or Amazon.com Gift Card on file when purchasing free apps.

Adjusting Amazon Appstore Settings

You can modify settings for Amazon Appstore, such as enabling parental controls or adding a Gift Card.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps, and then tap Store.
  2. Tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings:
    • Gift Cards: Enter a Gift Card or promotional code to be used on your Amazon purchases. Be sure to enter your code before placing your Amazon Appstore purchase if you'd like to apply the credit to your app purchase.
    • Parental Controls: Parental controls are disabled by default. You can enable parental controls to restrict purchases from the Amazon Appstore. If you have multiple devices, you should enable this setting on each device that you'd like to be enabled with parental controls.
    • In-App Purchasing: In-app purchasing lets you purchase items such as new game levels, in-game currency, and subscriptions within certain apps and games and is enabled by default. Tap this setting and tap the check-box to disable all in-app purchasing on your device. If you have multiple devices, choose this setting on each device you'd like to disable in-app purchasing.
    • Automatic Updates: When automatic updates are enabled, Amazon Appstore will install new versions of your apps when you're connected to a wireless network. If you select the Notify Me When Updates Are Installed option, you'll see a notification whenever a new version of an app is successfully installed. Updates featuring new or changed permissions will not be automatically installed; you'll have the opportunity to review any new permission before installing the update.
    • External Market Links: Allow, prevent, or ask before opening external market links with the Amazon Appstore.
    • Version and Release Notes: Verify your version of Amazon Appstore.

Setting Parental Controls

To turn on parental controls for Amazon Appstore purchases on your Kindle Fire:

  1. Tap the Quick Settings icon and tap More.
  2. Tap Parental Controls, and then tap ON.
  3. Create or enter your password or PIN.

Finding and Buying Apps

To search and browse for Amazon Appstore apps from your Kindle Fire, tap Apps from the Kindle Fire Home screen, and then select Store.

Free Apps in the Cloud

After you sign into your Amazon account on Kindle Fire, you'll see a great selection of apps available for free in your Cloud Library. Simply tap Apps from the Kindle Fire Home screen and select Cloud.

Shopping for Apps

You'll find the Free App of the Day, best sellers and other featured apps on the Amazon Appstore home page. You can search for apps by entering a search term in the search bar.

You can also find apps by:

  • Search: Type your search terms in the Search in Appstore field, and then tap Search. Narrow your search by tapping Refine and selecting attributes like average customer reviews or release date, or sort results by price.
  • View your recommendations: Scroll the top navigation bar and press Recommended for You. You must be logged in to your Amazon.com account to see your recommendations.
  • Browse by category: Tap a category in the top navigation bar, or tap All Categories. From here you'll be able to view top paid, free and new games and browse subcategories.

Purchasing Apps

Once you've found the app you'd like to purchase, tap the orange price button and select Buy App or Get App. Your default 1-Click payment method will be charged automatically (unless the app is free). Tap Open to launch the app after downloading it.

Note: Some apps may ask you to agree to a License Agreement before you can use them. When you open the app, carefully read the agreement before acknowledging the terms and conditions, and then tap Agree.

Saving Apps for Later

If you find an app you want to purchase later, tap Save to add the app to your “Saved for Later” list. To access this list, tap the Menu icon, tap More, and then tap Saved for Later.

Downloading and Installing Apps on Kindle Fire

After you have purchased an app from the Amazon Appstore, the download and installation will begin immediately when your Kindle Fire is connected wirelessly.

Downloading and installing previously purchased apps

You can download previously-purchased apps from the Cloud tab.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Press and hold the app you’d like to download, and then tap Install.

Managing apps and settings

You can manually update or view all of your apps from the Apps library.

  • Update your apps. From Apps, tap Store, and then tap the Menu icon. Select App Updates. You can either update one app by tapping Update, or, if you want to update all apps with a pending update, select Update All.
  • View all your apps. Tap Apps from the Home screen and choose the Device tab to see all apps that have been downloaded to your Kindle Fire. The Cloud tab will display all apps that have been previously purchased and are available on your Kindle Fire.

Purchasing In-App Items and Subscriptions

In-app purchasing is the purchase of items (such as in-game currency or premium unlocks) within a free or paid app. These items can be used to unlock additional functionality, such as new levels in a game, or allow you to purchase subscriptions and more. Paying for In-App Items

In-app purchases use the same 1-Click settings used to purchase apps in the Amazon Appstore for Android.

Password and Purchase PIN Requirements

Any in-app item over $20 will require a parental control password or PIN.

Subscription Items

Subscriptions can be accessed on all compatible devices registered to your account and will be automatically renewed until auto-renewal is turned off. If you wish to update your subscription or turn off auto-renewal, go to Your Subscriptions on Amazon.com.

Developers and publishers may also choose to include a free trial with your subscription. You will not be charged if you turn off auto-renewal at any time during the free trial period. If you do not turn off auto-renewal during the free trial period, your subscription will continue at the regular price using your default 1-Click payment method. You are eligible for one free trial per subscription.

Deleting Apps

You can remove an app from your Kindle Fire when you’re not using the app anymore.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap the Device tab to view apps that have been downloaded to your device.
  3. Press and hold the app you'd like to remove, and then tap Remove from Device.

Downloaded apps you remove from your Kindle Fire are stored in your Apps library and can be downloaded again from the Cloud tab.

To permanently remove an app from your Amazon.com account, visit Your Apps from a web browser. Select "Delete this app" from the "Actions..." drop down menu to the right of the app. If you permanently delete the app, you’ll need purchase it again from the Amazon Appstore to install it on your Kindle Fire.

About Amazon Coins

Amazon Coins is a new virtual currency for U.S. customers to purchase Kindle Fire-compatible apps, games, and in-app items.

Amazon Coins are supported on Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, Kindle Fire HD 7", Kindle Fire HD 8.9", and on the Amazon Appstore on Amazon.com. If you own a Kindle Fire 1st Generation, you can use your Coins on the Amazon Appstore on Amazon.com, and then download your purchase using the Cloud tab on your Kindle Fire.

Note:
  • Coins that you can earn on purchases of apps and in-app items are available on a limited time basis.
  • Amazon Coins follows the same parental controls that are available for other payment methods.
  • Purchasing in-app items with Amazon Coins isn’t supported on Kindle Fire 1st Generation at this time.

Using GameCircle

You can view achievements, leaderboards, and GameCircle settings in a game directly from your Kindle Fire with Amazon GameCircle. GameCircle syncs your game statistics so you can resume your progress on other GameCircle-enabled Kindle Fire devices.

GameCircle is activated by the game developer and may not be supported for all games in the Amazon Appstore for Android.

Making Your Apps Available through Amazon Appstore for Android

You can submit your apps for inclusion in the Amazon Appstore for Android by joining the Amazon Appstore Mobile App Distribution Portal. You'll be able to follow step-by-step instructions to create an account and upload your application and media files.
