While you are reading, you can change the text display, add bookmarks, add annotations, look up words in the dictionary, view your reading progress.

Quick Guide to Reading

You can turn pages, add bookmarks or notes, and highlight text while you are reading Kindle books, just like with print books.

  1. Change typeface, line spacing, words per line, or screen rotation – While reading, press the Aa key on the keyboard to display the text size menu.
  2. Turn pages – Press the right arrow to go to the next page. Press the left arrow to go to the previous page.
  3. Add a bookmark – Press the Menu button, and then select Add Bookmark.
  4. Go to different locations in the book – Press the Menu button, and then select Go to.
  5. Add highlights – Use the 5-way controller to navigate to the text you want to highlight, and then press the center of the 5-way controller to highlight the text.
  6. Add notes – Use the 5-way controller to navigate to the section where you want to place a note, and then begin to typing to create a note.
  7. Look up a word in the dictionary – Use the 5-way controller to place the cursor in front of a word to show the definition.
  8. Track your reading progress As you read, you'll see your progress displayed at the bottom of the screen as a percentage in the Progress Indicator.

Change Fonts, Line Spacing, or Margins

You can change the fonts, font size, or words per line of the page display for a Kindle book.

Note: The text size of menus and other screens is fixed and can't be modified. You can't change the text appearance of PDFs.
  1. While reading, press the Aa key on the keyboard to display the text size menu.
  2. Select the desired text size, words per line, or screen rotation.

Go to a Page or Location

You can go to the beginning of a book or to a specific place or location.

Location numbers
Location numbers are specific to each line of text. They help synchronize progress across different Kindle devices and apps registered to your account. You can use them to easily find a particular passage, regardless of changes you may make to text size.
Page numbers
If your Kindle book includes page numbers, you can also track your location according to the page number in print books. Not all Kindle books include page numbers. Because you can change the font size and other features, you may be able to view more than one page on your screen at one time. Your progress shows the page number for the text displayed at the top of the screen.
While reading, press the Menu button, and then select Go to... to find a specific page in your book.

Sync to the Furthest Page Read

You can manually sync your device to go to the furthest page read for books you are reading on other Kindle devices or reading apps.

Whispersync will automatically update and sync your book across all your Kindle devices.

  1. Make sure that your device is connected to a wireless network.
  2. Open your book, press the Menu button, and then select Sync to Furthest Page Read.

View Bookmarks, Highlights, and Notes

You can view all the bookmarks, highlights, and notes that you have added to a Kindle book or personal document.

  1. While reading, press the Menu button.
  2. Select View Notes & Marks to view your bookmarks, highlights, and notes.

Add or Remove Bookmarks

You can add or remove bookmarks at any location in a Kindle book or personal document.

  1. While reading, press the Menu button. Use the 5-way controller to select Add Bookmark.

    You will see the Bookmark icon appear in the upper-right corner of the page.

  2. To remove a bookmark, go to the page that has the bookmark you want to remove, and then press the Menu button. Select Delete Bookmark.

Add or Remove Highlights

You can add or remove highlights at any location in a Kindle book or personal document.

  1. Highlight a word or phrase:
    1. Use the 5-way controller to position the cursor, press the center of the 5-way controller, and then select the text.
    2. After you've selected your text, press the center of the 5-way controller.
  2. Remove a highlight:
    1. Use the 5-way controller to position the cursor at the beginning of the highlighted text.
    2. To delete the highlight, press the DEL button.

Add, Remove, or Edit Notes

You can add notes at any location in a Kindle book or personal document.

  1. Add a note:
    1. Press the Menu button, and then select Add Note or Highlight. Move the cursor to a location, and then begin typing to create a note. When you are finished, press the center of the 5-way controller to save.
  2. Remove or edit a note:
    1. While reading, press the Menu button, select View Notes & Bookmarks, and then use the 5-way controller to select the note.
    2. Press the DEL button to delete the note or the return key to make changes.

Look Up Words in the Dictionary

While reading, you can look up dictionary definitions on your Kindle Keyboard.

  1. While reading, place the cursor in front of the word you want defined.

    If the word is in the dictionary, an extract of its definition will be at the bottom of the screen.

  2. To see a complete definition of the word, press the Return key. You will now be placed in the dictionary and can use Previous Page and Next Page to view other word definitions.
  3. Press the Back button to return to your reading.

View Your Reading Progress

While you are reading, you can view pages read or the percentage of a book read on your Kindle Keyboard.

While reading, press the Menu button and track your reading progress in the bottom of the screen:
  • Percentage of book read
  • Page Number
  • Location in book

If the Page Numbers Source ISBN (the print book identification number) listed under Product Details on the product detail page is the same edition as your print book, the Kindle page numbers will match the page numbers in the printed edition.

Listen to a Book with Text-to-Speech

Listen to most books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and personal documents with Text-to-Speech. From a newspaper's Front-Page view, use Text-to-Speech to read newspaper abstracts.

If the rights holder does not allow Text-to-Speech, the Turn On Text-to-Speech option will be grayed out and you will not be able to select it.

  1. While reading, press the Aa key on the keyboard.
  2. Use the 5-way controller to select turn on next to Text-to-Speech.

    Press Aa again to adjust speaking voice and rate.

View the Book Description

While you are reading a Kindle eBook, you can read reviews about your book, see related titles, and learn more about the author.

Note: Book descriptions are not available for PDF files.
  1. While reading, press the Menu button, and then use the 5-way controller to select Book Description.
  2. Press the Back button to return to your reading.

Navigate Graphic Novels and Comics

Kindle Keyboard supports graphic novels and comics that contain enhanced Kindle Format 8 content features such as Kindle Panel View, Kindle Text Pop-Up, and zooming in on and panning across images and tables.

Navigate the panels or text pop-ups:
  1. Press the Next Page or Previous Page button.
  2. Press the Back button to exit the book.
