How do I download a song?

There are two ways to download a song from Amazon.com, both of which require you to register or be logged onto our site.

Method 1: Click the "Download song now" (or "Sign in to download") button on any song's page to download the song to your computer. If you are new to Amazon.com, you will be asked to register before downloading.

Method 2: On some browsers (particularly Internet Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 1), .mp3 files may not download when you click the download button. If this file does not automatically download, you can use your mouse's right-click function to save the file onto your computer. You'll be asked to select a folder to save the file in.

  • Internet Explorer users: right-click and select "Save Target As."
  • Netscape users: right-click and select "Save Link As."
  • Macintosh users: Click and hold the mouse, and then select "Download to Disc."

A better solution for IE 5.5 SP1 customers is to upgrade their browser to fix the bug. We recommend installing the Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 release:

After installing this service pack, you can download songs from Amazon.com.

How do I find the songs on my computer once I've downloaded them?

Each time you download a song from Amazon.com, you are asked to choose a folder on your computer in which to save the song. If you cannot find that folder later, you will need to search for the title of the downloaded song.

How do I play the songs I downloaded?

You will need a digital music player to play the songs you download. Visit our Media Player page to download a player.

How do I make the Download button work?

If clicking the "Download song now" button does not work, right-click and select "Save Target As." You can then specify the player you want to use.

If this does not work, you may have more than one music player installed.

First try downloading another song from our store. If you can download another song, that means we are temporarily experiencing difficulty with one song and ask that you try again later. If you cannot download another song, you may need to uninstall or reinstall your players.

Why are my MP3s being saved as .mpga files instead of .mp3?

RealOne Player can take over all the filename extensions and force the output filenames to appear as .mpga rather than .mp3. There are several options:

  • Ignore it--your .mpga music files will play in RealOne Player and several (although not all) other players.
  • Manually change the extension from .mpga to .mp3 in the Save Dialog box.
  • Use an MS-DOS rename utility to change all files in your music download directory from .mpga to .mp3.
  • Run Microsoft Regedit to "grab back" the extensions. Under the Edit menu, use the Find command to find all occurrences of .mpga and change them to .mp3. Note that using Regedit is only for Windows experts, as it is possible to damage your Windows install irrecoverably if you make a mistake.

Amazon.com recommends the first or second option; however, we can take no responsibility if you damage your file system by renaming files or editing your registry. Unfortunately, uninstalling RealOne Player does not recover the extensions.

Why can't I save MP3 files to my hard drive properly with Internet Explorer 5.5?

Internet Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 1 installed contains a bug that prevents downloads from the Amazon Digital Music Network from being recognized and saved to your hard disk properly. We recommend that you install the Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 release:

After you finish installing this link, you can download songs from Amazon Digital Music. To learn more about the underlying problem, read this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:
