Updating Your Kindle 1st Generation Software

Note: This software update only applies to Kindle 1st Generation. Please do not attempt to manually install Kindle 1st Generation software on a Kindle.

We're constantly working on improving your Kindle user experience. If you see software version 1.2 listed in your Kindle settings, you have the most recent software.

Features in the Kindle 1.2 Software Update

This update (version 1.2) adds the following features:

  • Image zoom: Zoom in on any image in Kindle books or periodicals using the scroll wheel.
  • Enhanced content management: Delete items directly from the Home screen with a new short-cut key--scroll to the item and push the "backspace" key.
  • Improved character and font support: New support includes Greek characters and monospace fonts.

Automatic Wireless Updates

Kindle 1st Generation is designed to automatically check for and download updates when one is available. If an update is available, Kindle will download and install the update the next time the wireless connection is activated and Kindle 1st Generation goes into sleep mode.

During the update, you'll see screens that show the update progress. The update should take less than 10 minutes and is complete when Kindle 1st Generation displays the Home screen. Do not power off or reset the Kindle 1st Generation until the update is complete.

To manually activate the wireless Kindle 1st Generation software update:

  1. Set the Kindle 1st Generation Power and Wireless switches to the "ON" position.

  2. Check the Whispernet status indicator at the bottom of the screen to ensure you are connected.

  3. Put Kindle 1st Generation to sleep by holding down the [ALT] key and pressing the [AA] key.

Updating Kindle 1st Generation Without Wireless Connectivity

Note: This software update only applies to Kindle 1st Generation. Please do not attempt to manually install Kindle 1st Generation software on a Kindle

You can download the Kindle 1st Generation software update to your computer and transfer the file to Kindle 1st Generation via the USB connection. The update process will take approximately 10 minutes.

When the update is completed successfully, Kindle 1st Generation will automatically restart and delete the update source file from your Kindle 1st Generation memory to maximize your available storage space.

  • If you are unfamiliar with using Kindle 1st Generation's USB connection: Please see the Using Kindle 1st Generation with Your Computer Help page.

  • If you receive an error downloading the file: You must be logged into your Amazon.com account and have a Kindle registered to your account. If you encounter an error, make sure you are signed into the correct Amazon.com account before attempting the download again. Please refer to our Signing Out Help page for more information.

To manually install the Kindle 1st Generation software update:

  1. Visit Amazon.com and make sure you're logged into the Amazon.com account to which your Kindle 1st Generation is registered. The download will not be available if you are not logged in before attempting step 2.

  5. Use your computer's file browser to copy the file "Update_kindle_1.2.bin" from your computer to Kindle 1st Generation's root directory or the SD card. Do not place the file into one of Kindle 1st Generation's folders.

  6. Check the USB activity indicator on the Kindle 1st Generation cursor bar. When the silver cursor stops flashing, the file transfer is complete and you can safely disconnect Kindle 1st Generation from your computer.

  7. Use your computer to unmount or eject your Kindle 1st Generation and disconnect the USB cable from Kindle 1st Generation and your computer.

  8. Press the Home key and then select "Settings" from the Home menu.
