Giving a New Kindle as Gift

To send a Kindle device as a gift when shopping on Amazon.com, place the Kindle device in your Shopping Cart and check the box next to "This will be a gift" when completing your purchase.

Designating your Kindle purchase as a gift ensures Amazon will:

  • Deliver the Kindle unregistered. The recipient can register the Kindle device to their own Amazon account when it arrives.
  • Ship the Kindle in an unmarked Amazon box that doesn't indicate the contents are a Kindle device. Keep the Kindle device a surprise by marking it as a gift.
  • Remove prices on the packing slip included with the order.

On the gift page during check out, you will be able to select registration options. Registration determines whose Amazon.com account is associated with future purchases from the device.

If you've already placed your order and it hasn't shipped, you can change the gift settings in Your Account. If your gift has shipped, you can deregister it through Manage Your Kindle. Deregistering the Kindle device will make it easier for your gift recipient to start using their new Kindle device right away.

Eligible customers who purchase a Kindle Fire receive a free month of Amazon Prime. If eligible, your gift recipient will receive a free month of Amazon Prime benefits once they complete the Kindle Fire registration process. Learn more about Amazon Prime and Kindle Fire.

Note: Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch are only available to customers with a U.S. billing and shipping address and restrictions apply when using Kindle Fire internationally.

Giving Kindle Content

Any Kindle book available for purchase in the Kindle Store can be given as a gift to anyone with an e-mail address. You don't need a Kindle device to send or receive Kindle book gifts, and the recipient can read their gift on a registered Kindle device or any free Kindle reading application. You can also schedule when your Kindle book gift is delivered. Learn more about Giving and Receiving Kindle Book Gifts.

Giving a Used Kindle as Gift

If your Kindle is registered to your account, you'll need to delete your content from the device and deregister it before giving your Kindle device as a gift. You can deregister your Kindle device through Manage Your Kindle.

Deregistering ensures that your Kindle device cannot be used to make purchases on your account. Also, once the device is deregistered, any books, subscriptions, or other content you've purchased from the Kindle Store will no longer be accessible on the device.

Existing purchased Kindle content already on a device cannot be given as a gift according to the License Agreement and Terms of Use.

If you wish to purchase Kindle books as a gift, please see Giving and Receiving Kindle Book Gifts. MP3s may also be purchased as gifts.
