Set Up Your Kindle Keyboard

Before you begin using your Kindle Keyboard or if you reset your Kindle, you'll need to register your Kindle and set up your 1-Click payment method. To prevent accidental purchases and access to Kindle settings, it is recommended to also set up Parental Controls.

Perform the Setup

During setup, you'll connect your Kindle Keyboard to a wireless network, register your Kindle and set up your 1-Click payment method.

Make sure you charge your Kindle before performing the setup. For more information, go to Charge the Battery.

  1. Turn on your Kindle Keyboard. Slide and release your power switch on the bottom of your device.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi.

    1. From the Home screen, press the Menu button, and then select Settings.
    2. Select View under Wi-Fi Settings, select a network, and then select Connect. A lock symbol next to Connect means the network requires a password. Once you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, your Kindle Keyboard automatically connects to it again whenever that network is in range. If more than one network is in range, your Kindle automatically connects to the last network used.
  3. Register your Kindle Keyboard. From the Home screen, press the Menu button, and then select Settings. Select register under Registration.
    • If you already have an Amazon account—Enter the e-mail address and password associated with your account.
    • If you do not have an Amazon account—Follow the onscreen instructions to set up a new account.

Your name will appear as the Registered User when registration is complete.

  4. Set up 1-Click payment method.

    1. Visit Manage Your Kindle and then click Kindle Payment Settings.
    2. Click Edit to update your payment method, and the follow the onscreen instructions.

Restrict Access to Shopping and Settings with Parental Controls

With Parental Controls you can restrict access to shopping, the Web browser, and Archived Items. When you turn on Parental Controls, you disable the ability to deregister and reset your device to factory default.

Note: When access to the Kindle Store is locked on your device, you can continue to purchase content on your computer and deliver it to your Kindle Keyboard. For more information, go to Deliver to Your Kindle.
  1. From Home, press the Menu button, and then select Settings.
  2. Turn one page, and then select Set next to Parental Controls.
  3. Select Turn off to require a password for access to any of the Parental Control options (Web Browser, Kindle Store, Archived Items).
  4. Enter your Parental Controls password, and then select Submit to save your settings.

When Parental Controls are set, a lock icon appears at the top of the screen.
