Kindle (2nd Generation) and Kindle DX Software Update

Kindle Version 2.5 Overview

We're excited to announce that a new, free software update is available for Kindle (2nd Generation) and Kindle DX. It's free and easy to download. The features included in this update are:

  • Collections: Organize your books, audiobooks, and personal documents into one or more collections. Subscriptions such as newspapers, magazines, and blogs cannot currently be added to collections on Kindle.

  • PDF Pan and Zoom: Zoom into PDFs and pan around to easily view small print and detailed tables or graphics.

  • Password Protection: Password protect your Kindle when you're not using it.

  • More Font Sizes & Improved Clarity: Enjoy two new larger font sizes and sharper fonts for an even more comfortable reading experience.

  • Facebook & Twitter Posts: Share meaningful book passages with friends on Facebook and Twitter directly from your Kindle.

  • Popular Highlights: See what the Kindle community thinks are the most interesting passages in the books you're reading.

Applying Kindle Software Updates

If you have a software version prior to 2.5, you can download the latest Kindle software update, version 2.5.8, to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle via USB.

To determine your Kindle software version, press the Home button, then press the Menu button. Navigate to "Settings" by moving the 5-way controller down, then press the 5-way controller to select. The version information is located at the bottom of the screen:

Here's how to download version 2.5.8:
  1. Determine which type of Kindle you have: Look at the first 4 digits of the serial number located on the back of your Kindle or from Home, select Menu, then Settings. On the Settings screen you will see the Kindle version at the bottom of the screen. If you see "Version Kindle 2.5" or earlier, please proceed with the steps below to update your Kindle to the latest software.

    Note: If your Kindle is in a cover, please follow the instructions that came with the cover to ensure you carefully remove your Kindle before attempting to check for the serial number on the back.

  2. Download your software: Visit the appropriate link below to download the Kindle 2.5.8 software update file directly to your computer:

Software version 2.5.8 includes performance improvements to software version 2.5. We welcome your feedback about this latest software version. Please send us an e-mail.

  1. Transfer software to your Kindle: Turn your Kindle on and connect it to your computer using the USB cable. Drag and drop the new update file from your computer to the Kindle drive. (The drive contains a number of folders - such as "audible," "documents," and "music" - and is typically displayed as a "device" icon).
  1. Monitor file transfer and disconnect: Check your file transfer progress to ensure file transfer to your Kindle is complete before disconnecting. After the file transfer is complete, eject the Kindle to safely disconnect Kindle from your computer. Disconnect the USB cable from your Kindle and your computer.

  2. Start the software update: Go to the Home screen, press the Menu key, and select "Settings." Press the Menu key again, and then select "Update Your Kindle." (This option will be grayed out if the most recent update has already been installed.) Select "Ok" when prompted if you want to perform an update. Your Kindle will restart twice during the update. After the first restart, you will see "Your Kindle is Updating."

  3. Once the update is complete: Your Kindle will automatically restart the second time. When you go to the Settings page, you should notice “Version: Kindle 2.5.8” at the bottom of the screen. Once you see this, your update is completed.

Troubleshooting Update Issues

Symptom Cause Resolution
"Update" menu option on the Settings page is grayed out. The update file is in the incorrect directory, or an incorrect update file was copied based on your kindle type. Plug your Kindle back into your computer, and verify the update file is for your device type and ispresent in the root directory of your Kindle.
Received an error message when selecting "Update Your Kindle." The software update file was renamed. Delete the update file on your computer and Kindle, and repeat the software update process above.
The update file was copied partially (this can happen if USB was pulled out before the file could be completely copied). Plug your Kindle back into your computer, and ensure the file is copied completely before you unplug your Kindle.
Unsupported software modifications are present. The Kindle doesn't support software modification, and will be unable to update the Kindle software if it has been modified. Contact the original developer of the software modification for instructions on how to remove the modification.
Kindle is running a software version prior to version 2.3 In order to download software version 2.5, your Kindle (US Wireless) must be running at least version 2.3.
  1. Download Kindle software update version 2.3:
  2. Transfer Software to Your Kindle: Turn your Kindle on and connect it to your computer using the USB cable. Then use your computer's file browser to copy the update file from your computer to the Kindle root directory. (The root directory contains a number of folders, such as "audible," "documents," and "music," and is typically denoted by a "device" icon.)
  3. Monitor File Transfer and Disconnect: Check your file browser's file transfer progress bar to ensure that file transfer to your Kindle is complete. When you're confident the file has transferred successfully, you can use your computer's un-mount or eject function to safely disconnect Kindle from your computer. Disconnect the USB cable from Kindle and your computer.
  4. Start the Software Update: Go to the Home screen, press the Menu key, and select "Settings." Press the Menu key again, and then select "Update Your Kindle." (This option will be grayed out if the most recent update has already been installed.) Select "OK" when prompted if you want to perform an update.
