Reading on Kindle Fire 1st Generation
Tap Books from the Home screen to start reading on your Kindle Fire. Use the buttons to sort your books by author, recently read, or title, and change from grid to list view by tapping the additional options settings at the bottom of the screen. Tap any cover to start reading.
The Cloud tab displays all your books stored in the Amazon Cloud. Books not yet downloaded to your device display an arrow on the cover, and will begin downloading when you tap the cover. Once downloaded, the book will appear in your Device tab.
Tap Store to begin shopping for new books.
Setting Text Appearance
You can choose from eight different font sizes and several additional options to customize the appearance of your Kindle books. First, tap the center of the screen while reading.
Tap the Text icon to display text appearance options, then tap to select the type size, line spacing, margins, or background color. Tap Typeface to see additional font options.
Note: The text size of menus and other screens is fixed and cannot be modified.
Using the Built-in Dictionary
While reading a book or subscription content, you can see a brief definition of a word using the built-in dictionary, the New Oxford American Dictionary.
To see the definition of a word in your reading:
Currently, Kindle Fire does not support other dictionaries.
Page Locations and Page Numbers
To see your progress displayed at the bottom of the screen as a percentage, tap the center of your screen while reading.
Kindle books mark your progress using locations. Location numbers are specific to each line of text so you can easily find a particular passage, regardless of changes you may make to text size.
Tap the center of the screen while reading to display location numbers at the bottom of the screen.
Kindle Fire does not currently support page numbers.
Zooming on Images
You can increase the size of an image in a Kindle book for easier viewing. Press and hold your finger on the image to display a magnifying glass icon, then tap on the icon. To return the image to normal size, tap on it again. You can also pinch to zoom in or out of an image.
Annotations: Highlights, Bookmarks, and Notes
Annotations (bookmarks, highlights, and notes) you make within your Kindle books are stored in your Kindle Library on Amazon.com. Your Kindle must be connected wirelessly in order for your annotations to be saved on Amazon.com . You can view your annotations by tapping the center of the screen while the book is open, then the Menu icon displayed at the bottom of the screen.
You can place a bookmark anywhere in your Kindle book by tapping the upper right corner to place your bookmark. You'll see a blue bookmark icon.
To remove your bookmark, tap it again.
To view your bookmarks:
With your book open, tap the center of the screen, then the Menu icon displayed at the bottom of the screen.
You'll see all your bookmarks, noted with the same blue bookmark icon. Tap the entry to go to that location within your book.
You can highlight text in your Kindle content like you would use a highlighter pen on paper and view the highlights at any time by tapping the center of the screen, then tapping the Menu icon displayed at the bottom of the screen.

You can quickly remove a highlight by tapping and holding on the highlighted passage, then tapping Delete Highlight.

With your book open, tap the center of the screen, then the Menu icon displayed at the bottom of the screen to see your list of My Notes & Marks. Tap any highlight to go to that location within your book.
You can make notes at any point in your Kindle book and view them at any time by tapping the center of the screen, then the Menu icon displayed at the bottom of the screen.To add a note:

Navigating Within Your Kindle Books
Tap the center of the screen, then the Menu icon displayed at the bottom of the screen.
You'll see options to navigate to the book's cover, table of contents, beginning, or a specific location. Tap any of these to go to that location.
The Sync to Furthest Page option will update your book to the most recently read page across all your Kindle devices or free reading applications.
You'll also see My Notes & Marks displayed.
Selecting Internal Links
Your reading material may also contain links to other sections within the document. For example, in many books, the table of contents links to those sections of the book. Links are easy to spot because they are underlined. Tap to select any link.
Your reading material may also contain external links that take you to locations on the web. The Amazon Silk web browser will open if your Kindle Fire is connected wirelessly.
Book Extras provide additional information about a book, including character descriptions, series information, important places and more. Book Extras content is edited and maintained by Kindle customers and the Shelfari.com community.
If a Kindle book includes Book Extras, you'll see Book Extras listed when you tap the Menu icon at the bottom of the screen when reading on your Kindle Fire. Tap Book Extras to access this information. Tap the "Edit" button to edit the content or tap the "Add" link to make additions.
Social Networking Options
To share your favorite passages from your Kindle books and your thoughts about them, tap and hold on a word or phrase while reading.
Tap "Share." Tap within the text field that says "Share your thoughts with the Kindle community" to enter any thoughts about the text you selected, then tap the Share button. Your entry will be added to your Amazon Kindle profile at http://kindle.amazon.com/your_reading.
You'll see your entry added to the other Recent Shares from this Book. To remove your entry, tap the X next to it. Tap the Delete button on the pop up menu to delete the item from your Amazon Kindle profile.
If you also check the boxes next to the Twitter or Facebook symbol, your entry can be shared through your Twitter and Facebook accounts. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up sharing features and follow your Twitter or Facebook friends on kindle.amazon.com.
You can only remove an entry shared through Twitter or Facebook from your Twitter or Facebook account.
