Reading Enhancements

With your Kindle Touch, you can learn more about the books that you are reading, translate the text in your Kindle book, zoom in on images, and view book or periodical recommendations. Kindle devices that include Special Offers display special offers and sponsored screensavers when you're not reading.

Explore Your Book with X-Ray

X-Ray lets you explore the "bones of a book." You can also view more detailed information from Wikipedia and from Shelfari, Amazon's community-powered encyclopedia for book lovers.

Note: X-Ray is not available for all Kindle books. If X-Ray is not available for the book, the X-Ray button is grayed out.

  1. While reading, tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar, and then tap X-Ray.
  2. View and filter the list of topics:
    • To filter by section of the book, tap Page, Chapter, or Book.
    • To filter by the type of topic, tap People or Terms.

    The bars show all of the locations in the page, chapter, or book where that character or term is mentioned.

  3. Tap to view a list of the topics mentioned on the Page you are reading, in the Chapter, or in the Book.
  4. Tap People or Terms to filter the list.
  5. To filter the list, tap People or Terms.
  6. To learn more about a topic, tap the topic in the list.
    • Read a description of the character or term.
    • If available, follow the links to view more information on Wikipedia or Shelfari.
    • Read the excerpts in the book that mention that character or term.

      Swipe your finger up and down to scroll through long lists of excerpts.

    • Tap an excerpt to go that location in the book.

      If you go to a different location in the book, tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar, and then tap the Back< button to return to the topic description and list of excerpts.

  7. Tap the Back < button to return to the X-Ray dialog box, or tap the x to resume reading.

Look Up Words in the Dictionary

While reading, you can look up dictionary definitions on your Kindle Touch.

  1. While reading, press and hold a word, and then release to see the summary definition.
  2. Tap Show Full Definition to see more.

    The dictionary opens to the word you looked up. You can tap or swipe to turn pages within the dictionary.

  3. Tap the Back button in the toolbar to return to your reading.

Translate Text Using Instant Translations

While you are reading, you can select text and then use Instant Translations to translate the text to a different language.

To use Instant Translations, your Kindle Touch needs to be connected to a wireless network. To learn more, go to Connect Wirelessly.

  1. While reading, press and drag to highlight the text you want to translate.
  2. In the pop-up menu, tap More, tap Translation, and then select the language to translate the selection into.

Listen to Music

After you transfer MP3 files to your Kindle Touch, you can listen to music while you read.

Kindle Touch only plays MP3 files free of Digital Rights Management (DRM) software. To learn how to transfer MP3 files to your Kindle, go to Download Kindle Content.

  1. From Home, tap the Menu Image of menu icon
				icon.
  2. Tap Experimental, and then tap MP3 Player.
  3. In the audio player that displays at the bottom of your screen, tap Play to begin playing audio files.

    You can either listen through your Kindle Touch external speakers or through earphones that are plugged into the headphone jack.

    The audio files will play in the order of the date you added them to your Kindle Touch.

You can continue to listen to music while you read. Playback will stop if you open an audiobook, turn on Text-to-Speech, or when all of the files have been played. Tap the top of the screen at any time to display MP3 Player options.

Navigate Graphic Novels and Comics

Kindle Touch supports graphic novels and comics that contain enhanced Kindle Format 8 content features such as Kindle Panel View, Kindle Text Pop-Up, and zooming in on and panning across images and tables.

  1. Navigate the panels or text pop-ups:
    1. Tap Next Page or Previous Page.
    2. Tap Back to exit the book.
  2. Zoom in or pan across images and tables:
    1. Double tap the image or table.
    2. Pinch to zoom in, or press and drag to pan across the image or table.
