Using Power and Volume Controls


The power and volume controls are located on the outside edge of your Kindle Fire HD device.

To put your Kindle Fire HD in sleep mode

Press and release the power button

To turn your Kindle Fire HD off

Press the power button for a few seconds, and then tap Shut Down

If your Kindle Fire HD does not power on or is unresponsive during use

Restart your Kindle by holding the power button for 20 seconds

To increase volume

In Landscape mode, with camera Up, Press the Volume Up side of the rocker switch. This is the side of the switch next to the headphone jack.

To decrease volume

In Landscape mode, with camera Up, Press the Volume Down button. Press the Volume Down side of the rocker switch. This is the side of the switch away from the headphone jack.

To mute the sound

In Landscape mode, with camera Up, Press and hold the Volume Down button


Setting Parental Controls

Parental Controls allow you to individually restrict access to one or more of the following on your Kindle Fire by requiring a password for access:

  • Web browsing
  • The Email, Contacts, and Calendars apps
  • The ability to purchase from the Amazon Store or Amazon Shop app
  • The ability to play Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video
  • Specific content types (For example, Books or Apps)
  • Wireless connectivity
  • Location-based services
  • Mobile Network (on Kindle Fire HD 8.9" 4G LTE)

Note: There is also a free app on your Kindle Fire HD 8.9" that allows parents to choose what books, apps, games and videos they want to give their kids access to. For more information, see Kindle FreeTime.

To set a Parental Control password and select items to restrict:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap More.
  2. Tap Parental Controls, and then tap On.
  3. Enter a password, confirm, and then select Finish.
    Once you've set a password, you can choose specific items to restrict.

To change Parental Controls settings or to change your password:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Tap More, and then tap Parental Controls.
  3. Enter your password.
  4. Change Parental Controls settings, or tap Change Password.

If you forget your Parental Controls password:

If you forget your password, you'll need to reset your Kindle Fire HD to factory defaults. After resetting, you'll need to register your Kindle Fire HD again, and re-download your content from the Cloud.

To reset your Kindle Fire HD to factory defaults:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Tap More, and then tap Device.
  3. Tap Reset to Factory Defaults.

Setting a Lock Screen Password

You can set a password to restrict access to your Kindle Fire HD. You'll then need to enter the password to access your Kindle Fire HD if it is in sleep mode or is turned off.

Note: If you set up a Microsoft Exchange e-mail account on your Kindle Fire, you may be required to set a password for the lockscreen on your device. Microsoft Exchange enforces policies from the server where your email is stored. Your Exchange server may require that the device you access email from includes a password.

To set a lock screen password

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen. Tap More, and then tap Security.
  2. Next to Lock Screen Password, tap On.
  3. Enter a password at least 4 characters long. You can use both numbers and letters.
  4. Tap Next, confirm your Password, and tap Done.

To remove the password

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen. tap More, and then tap Security.
  2. Next to Lock Screen Password, tap Off.
  3. Enter the existing Lock Screen Password, and then tap Done.

If you forget your password

If you forget your password and enter the wrong password five times in row, you'll be prompted to reset your Kindle Fire HD to the factory default settings to regain access. After resetting, you'll need to register your Kindle Fire HD again, and re-download your content from the cloud.

To reset your Kindle, tap OK reset.

Changing The Device Time

When you first set up your Kindle Fire, you are prompted to choose a time zone, which sets the time on your device. If you want to change the time zone:

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap More.
2. Tap Device and then tap Date & Time.
3. Tap Select Time Zone and then tap your time zone. The clock will update to the proper time for that zone.

Note: Selecting the time zone is how to set the time on your Kindle Fire device. There is not an option to set the time manually.

Turning Location Based Service On or Off

Location-Based Services allows applications such as Maps to gather and use data showing your location. Your estimated location is calculated by the triangulation of Wi-Fi access points. Location-Based Services are turned off by default.

To turn Location-Based Services on or off:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen, and tap More.
  2. Tap Location-Based Services, and then tap On or Off.

Pairing with Bluetooth Devices

You can connect your Kindle Fire HD to wireless devices that include Bluetooth technology, such as a Bluetooth keyboard or speakers. To enable Bluetooth on your Kindle Fire HD, first verify that you are within range of the compatible device.

To connect a Bluetooth device to your Kindle Fire HD:

  1. Confirm that your Bluetooth peripheral device is turned on and set to pairing mode.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Wireless.
  3. Tap Bluetooth, and then next to Enable Bluetooth, tap On.
  4. Under Available Devices you'll see Bluetooth devices detected by your Kindle Fire HD. Tap a device to connect, and follow any additional pairing instructions.


A Bluetooth icon Bluetooth will appear in the status bar at the top of the screen when enabled.
Kindle Fire HD supports the following Bluetooth profiles:

  • A2DP Streams audio to compatible Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and many car audio systems.
  • AVRCP Receives basic media commands, such as play/pause and increase/decrease volume from compatible devices.
  • HID Connects to compatible Bluetooth keyboards.
  • OPP Enables users to push data from compatible computers or phones.

Note: Bluetooth microphones and microphone-enabled headsets are not supported.

Using a Bluetooth Keyboard

When you pair a Bluetooth keyboard with your Kindle Fire HD 7", you can use it to navigate and make selections on your device and in many apps. For example, you can use the arrow and enter keys to:

  • Flip through the carousel on the Home page to look through recent content items
  • Select items in content libraries
  • Navigate through and select items in Kindle apps like Email and Amazon Instant Video
  • Navigate through and select items in many third-party apps

You can also use the following shortcuts on your Bluetooth keyboard:

  • Copy (ctrl-c)
  • Paste (ctrl-v)
  • Cut (ctrl-x)
  • Select All (ctrl-a)
  • Cursor to front/end of line (ctrl-left arrow or ctrl-right arrow)
  • Cursor to top/bottom of page (ctrl-up or ctrl-down)
  • Forward Delete (shift-backspace)
  • Highlight text (Shift-left arrow or Shift-right arrow)

Additionally, you can use special keys like Play and Previous/Next Song for music playback control, and Home, Menu, Back, Tab, Esc, and Search to access those functions on your Kindle Fire HD.

Changing Application Settings

You can change settings for individual apps on your Kindle Fire HD, and change app notification settings on your device.
To change application settings:
Swipe down from the top of the screen, tap More, and then tap Applications.

  • To change the notifications that appear in the Notifications area, tap Notification Settings and select On or Off next to each app.
  • To change settings for your installed applications, tap Installed Applications and choose the app you want to change settings for.
  • To change settings for content libraries, tap the application you want to change under Amazon Applications.
  • To turn off content recommendations on the Home screen, under Amazon Applications tap Amazon Home Recommendations, and then tap Hide.

Third party applications may have additional settings that you can access within the app.

Turning wireless off (Airplane Mode)

Airplane Mode turns off the wireless connection on your Kindle Fire HD. You can use this setting to turn off Wi-Fi connectivity at any time.

To turn on Airplane Mode:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen, and then tap More.
  2. Tap Wireless.
  3. Next to Airplane Mode, tap On to turn off Wi-Fi.

Tap Off to restore wireless  connectivity. When Airplane Mode is on, an airplane icon will appear at the top of your Kindle screen next to the battery indicator.

Linking your Facebook and Twitter Accounts

You can choose to connect your Kindle Fire HD to Twitter and Facebook to sync photos and share reading highlights, what you're listening to, game info, and more. You have the option to link your Twitter or Facebook accounts when you first set up your Kindle Fire, or you can choose to do so at any other time.

To link your Kindle Fire to your Facebook or Twitter account:

  • On the Home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap More.
  • Tap My Account and then tap Manage Social Network Accounts.
  • Choose the social network you want to link to and follow the instructions.

To unlink Facebook or Twitter:

Once your account is linked, you can return to the Manage Social Networks Account page and select Unlink next to the social network you want to remove.
