Access, Organize & Remove Content

Your Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" can store thousands of books, apps, games, music, videos, and more, which are referred to as "content" throughout our Help pages. There are several ways to access, organize, and remove content from your Kindle Fire.

Access and Buy Kindle Content

To find and purchase content, tap a content library in the Navigation Bar from the Home screen.

  • From within a content library, swipe from the left edge of the screen to open the navigation panel and view selections for shopping and accessing your content. The selections you see in the navigation panel depend on the type of content you're viewing.
  • Tap Cloud or On Device to switch between content stored in the Amazon Cloud and content downloaded to your Kindle Fire. All digital content purchased from Amazon is stored in the Cloud.

Remove Content from Your Kindle Fire

If you need additional device storage space, or you have content that you no longer use, you can remove items from your Kindle Fire.

Any digital purchases made from Amazon are saved to the Cloud and can be downloaded to the device again. Individual app settings or in-app items may be lost when removed from your Kindle Fire. Check with the app developer for more details on their app policies before removing an app from your Kindle Fire.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Device, and then tap Storage
    1. Tap 1-Tap Archive to free up storage space for items that have not been recently used. With the 1-Tap Archive feature, your Kindle Fire groups all items that have not been used recently, and allows you to remove all of them from your device by tapping Archive.
    2. Tap a content category from the list to see the file names and sizes. Select the checkbox next to any items you want to remove, and then tap Remove . Essential programs in the System Applications and System folder are needed to operate your Kindle Fire. Items in these folders can’t be modified or removed.

Tip: To permanently remove apps, games or music from the Cloud, go to the Apps, Games or Music library on your device, tap Cloud, and then press and hold the item you want to remove. Tap Delete from Cloud. If you'd like to permanently remove a book, magazine, or newspaper from the Cloud, you can do so from Manage Your Content and Devices ( full site)Manage Your Content and Devices ( full site).

Show or Hide Home Screen Recommendations

When using your Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" in portrait mode, you'll see personalized recommendations beneath the carousel on the Home screen. If you do not want to see these recommendations, you can hide them.

Note: To dismiss individual recommendations from the Home screen, press and hold the recommendation, and then tap Not Interested. The content recommendation will be removed, and you will no longer receive it the next time you scroll through the carousel.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Applications.
  3. Tap Home Screen, and then tap Show or Hide.
