About Family Library

With Family Library, you can share select content between two adults in your Amazon Household.

Family Library lets you share Kindle books, apps and games, audiobooks, Kindle Owners' Lending Library benefits, and Prime Video streaming across your Amazon devices and Kindle reading apps after linking your Amazon account to that of another adult in your household. Each adult chooses what they want to share: they can share all of their Kindle books, apps, and audiobooks, or they can choose to only share individual titles.

Note: Music, magazines and newspapers, newsstand subscriptions accessed through applications, games and software downloads from outside Amazon Appstore, and purchased or rented Amazon Videos cannot be shared at this time.

Once you've set up Family Library, shared content will appear in the Cloud tab of each of your supported devices, which you can filter (for example, See My Books, See My Partner's Books, See All Books, etc.). When accessing shared content, each adult has their own settings for that content, including furthest page read, notes, and highlights.

Create a Household

In order to use Family Library to share your content with another adult in your household, you must join an Amazon Household together. Members of an Amazon Household include:

  • Two adults, each with their own Amazon account.
  • Up to four children. Child profiles are created as part of an adult’s account.
To create an Amazon Household:
  1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices and sign in to your account.
  2. From the Settings tab, select Invite Adult under Households and Family Library.
  3. Have the other adult sign in to their Amazon account.

    Note: Amazon Households and Family Library require a unique Amazon account for each adult. If the other adult doesn't already have their own Amazon account, they can create one during this step.

  4. Once the second adult signs in or creates their account, select Yes to share your payment methods, Amazon content and services, and management of any child profiles. Select No to only share management of any child profiles.

Share Your Content

You can start sharing content after setting up your Amazon Household and enabling Family Library.

Important: In order to share content, both adults need to authorize each other to use the credit and debit cards associated with their Amazon accounts for purchases on Amazon. This will not affect either adult’s current payment settings, but each adult will be able to copy the payment method of the other adult to his or her Amazon account to use for purchases on Amazon. If you disable Family Library, or if either adult leaves the Amazon Household, any copied payment methods are deleted automatically.

To share Kindle books, apps and games, and audiobooks through Family Library:

  1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices and click the Your Content tab.
  2. Check the box next to the content you'd like to share, and then click Add to Library.
    Tip: If you do not see the Add to Library button, select Show Family Library.
  3. Choose the adult or Amazon FreeTimeprofile you'd like to share the selected content with, and then click OK.

To utilize Kindle Owners' Lending Library benefits through Family Library, open the Kindle Store on a Kindle e-reader, Fire tablet, or Fire phone registered to the added adult's account, and then navigate to the Kindle Owners' Lending Library section. Choose a book you'd like to borrow, and then select Borrow for Free. For more information, go to Borrow Books from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

To stream Prime Videos through Family Library, you’ll need to download the Amazon Video app on a compatible device, and then register that device using the Amazon credentials of the added adult. For more information, go to Get Amazon Video.

Access Shared Content on Your Device or App

Once you’ve set up Family Library, you and the other adult in your Amazon Household will be able to see any shared Kindle books, apps, and audiobooks in the Cloud or Archived Items tab on any of the compatible Amazon devices and Kindle reading apps registered to your Amazon accounts.

You can access content shared through Family Library on many Amazon devices and Kindle reading apps, though you may need to enable your device to view shared content from Manage Your Content and Devices or the Family Library settings on a compatible device first. On select Fire tablets and Amazon Fire TV, you can share content with your children through the Amazon FreeTime app. On select Kindle e-readers, you can share content through Kindle FreeTime.

Leave a Household

To leave an Amazon Household and stop sharing all of your content:

  1. From Manage Your Content and Devices, go to Settings.
  2. Hover your mouse over the name of the adult you'd like to remove from your household, and then click Remove [NAME] from Household.
  3. Click Remove Profile to continue, or Cancel to keep them in your Household.

After leaving the Amazon Household, you will lose access to any content that was shared from the other adult, and any shared Prime benefits.

Note: If either adult leaves the Amazon Household, both adults will be unable to join another Amazon Household for 180 days. If you’ve accidentally left an Amazon Household and are trying to join an Amazon Household with the same person you were previously in an Amazon Household with, please contact Customer Service for assistance by clicking the Contact Us button.
